[02:11.600 -> 02:15.500] It's Jake and Damien here from the High Performance Podcast and we thought what
[02:15.500 -> 02:19.000] we would do with the Women's World Cup is just bring you a collection of some
[02:19.000 -> 02:23.000] of the conversations that we've had over the past few years with a man who has
[02:23.000 -> 02:25.060] coached the Lionesses but also three
[02:25.060 -> 02:28.700] women who've been at the center of the game. Yeah we've got some great archive
[02:28.700 -> 02:32.020] clips today to listen to from Phil Neville from when he was in charge of
[02:32.020 -> 02:36.860] the Lionesses, the brilliant Alex Scott who was a stellar player for England and
[02:36.860 -> 02:41.900] then became a stellar pundit, we've got Jill Scott a member of the European
[02:41.900 -> 02:46.640] Championship winning team, Queen of the Jungle, and the amazing Steph Harton.
[02:46.640 -> 02:48.620] Okay, let's start then with Steph.
[02:48.620 -> 02:50.360] When she joined us on High Performance,
[02:50.360 -> 02:52.080] we had an awesome conversation.
[02:52.080 -> 02:53.540] Here she is.
[02:53.540 -> 02:55.640] When I was younger, there wasn't that much of a legacy,
[02:55.640 -> 03:00.520] and there wasn't that much to kind of aspire to be.
[03:00.520 -> 03:04.240] Whereas now I know that I've been a part of a legacy
[03:04.240 -> 03:07.000] of women's football over the last 10, 12 years. Ond nawr rwy'n gwybod bod rhaid i mi fod yn rhan o'r legais o fwydfa mewn gwirionedd dros y 10-12 mlynedd diwethaf.
[03:07.000 -> 03:18.000] Rwy'n meddwl o'r Olympiadau yn 2012, rwy'n meddwl mai hwn oedd y moment mwyaf o fwyaf o fwy o bobl i gael y fwy o bobl i wylio ar y tele a'r stadion.
[03:18.000 -> 03:28.320] I ni fynd a hyrwyddo oedd anhygoel ac mae hynny'n rhoi chwaraewyr y chwaraewyr i'r map. Rwy'n edrych yn ôl i 2015 pan ddewisom meddal bron yng Nghymru.
[03:28.320 -> 03:33.200] Doeddwn i ddim yn meddwl i fynd i gael unrhyw beth ond i ddod o'r home gyda'r meddal.
[03:33.200 -> 03:37.600] A gwybod bod pawb yn gweld nhw yn ôl i'w home a gwybod pan ydych chi'n dod yn ôl
[03:37.600 -> 03:39.600] bod eich bod wedi bod a byw mewn ychydig o fudd.
[03:39.600 -> 03:50.000] Mae pobl yn gwybod eich enw a'ch siart, sy'n teimlo'n bwahanol. Rwy'n credu bod yna lawer mwy y gallwn ei gynhyrchu, ond rwy'n hoffi gwybod bod gennym rhan o rhai
[03:50.000 -> 03:52.000] gwahanol dros y blwyddyn diwethaf.
[03:52.000 -> 03:54.000] Felly dyna oedd Steff Horton.
[03:54.000 -> 03:56.000] Ac nawr, gadewch i ni gysylltu â Jill Scott,
[03:56.000 -> 04:01.000] y meddwlwyr yng Nghymru, a star o'r tîm a chyflawni'r Campionshawyr Ewropeaidd.
[04:02.000 -> 04:05.040] Pan ddechreuon ni i'r ffinal, rwy'n cofio bod wedi dweud, edrychwch, rydyn ni'n gwybod beth rydyn ni eisiau ei wneud. Rydyn ni eisiau ysbrydoli ein nion, championship winning team. When we got to the final, I always remember we said,
[04:05.040 -> 04:06.880] look, we know what we want to do.
[04:06.880 -> 04:08.120] We want to inspire a nation.
[04:08.120 -> 04:09.480] We want to get the crowd behind us.
[04:09.480 -> 04:12.400] We just want to leave women's football in a better place.
[04:12.400 -> 04:15.160] And I remember by that semifinal, when we won it,
[04:15.160 -> 04:16.400] I felt like we'd done that.
[04:16.400 -> 04:18.080] The crowds were so supportive.
[04:18.080 -> 04:21.040] Even the first day at Old Trafford, I felt like,
[04:21.040 -> 04:22.840] you know what, we don't have to bang the drum
[04:22.840 -> 04:28.000] about women and girls playing football. So we can actually just go out and enjoy this tournament.
[04:28.000 -> 04:29.800] And I feel like that's what happened.
[04:29.800 -> 04:33.600] And going into that final, I didn't feel like we were under pressure to win it.
[04:33.600 -> 04:35.600] Because I felt like we'd already won in a sense.
[04:35.600 -> 04:41.600] I'm like, we've got 90,000 people that we've given an opportunity to see an England-Germany final.
[04:41.600 -> 04:45.960] Yeah, obviously the gold was going to be the icing on the cake, but there was no pressure that day.
[04:45.960 -> 04:47.400] It was weird.
[04:47.400 -> 04:49.000] The final whistle goes.
[04:49.000 -> 04:52.640] You've won the Euros, you've done on home soil, you've played your part.
[04:53.200 -> 04:54.200] What goes through your mind?
[04:54.200 -> 04:56.200] I've still got goosebumps now when you say that.
[04:56.200 -> 04:57.200] I have, when you're telling me.
[04:57.200 -> 04:58.200] Literally.
[04:59.200 -> 05:03.600] You know what, I ran straight over to Kira, who'd been playing obviously centre midfield,
[05:03.600 -> 05:05.680] and I think I just give her the biggest hug.
[05:05.680 -> 05:07.840] I thought she was absolutely fantastic throughout the tournament
[05:07.840 -> 05:09.120] and I think I just said,
[05:09.120 -> 05:11.640] I just love you, thank you so much.
[05:11.640 -> 05:13.360] And I was like,
[05:13.360 -> 05:16.280] yeah, I can't even put them feelings into words, I really can't.
[05:16.280 -> 05:17.600] I was like, just won the Euros
[05:17.600 -> 05:20.600] and I stayed out on that pitch for about two hours after.
[05:20.600 -> 05:22.880] I was like, I just don't want to leave this moment.
[05:22.880 -> 05:27.940] But yeah, you just, you don't want to to give cliche answers but it's like everything that you've
[05:27.940 -> 05:32.160] ever wanted just happened but you know what the biggest thing now is I don't
[05:32.160 -> 05:37.040] reflect on that moment as much like as I say I haven't watched the game back but
[05:37.040 -> 05:42.080] I'm just so happy that now we have a bit of fight and talk as young girls and
[05:42.080 -> 05:45.040] like women that are girls can't play football
[05:45.040 -> 05:49.320] well actually we're one of you Rose and I think them young girls can just
[05:49.320 -> 05:53.560] step into the school field and they can play with the boys and there'll be girls
[05:53.560 -> 05:57.240] playing as well and there's just no questions asked and I get so many dads
[05:57.240 -> 06:01.040] coming up to us and some of them will go can I get a picture for my daughter and
[06:01.040 -> 06:04.800] the mate will go he hasn't got a daughter but there's so many that come up to us
[06:04.800 -> 06:06.900] and they're like you know what my daughter plays now and
[06:06.900 -> 06:09.860] they're like I'm gonna kill you cuz I've got a stand on the side of the pitch now
[06:09.860 -> 06:12.900] cuz I've got my son on the morning and then my daughter on the afternoon and
[06:12.900 -> 06:18.540] honestly it just makes us like so happy. Oh it was so good to chat to Jill Scott
[06:18.540 -> 06:22.540] also she makes a great coffee. She has her own coffee shop doesn't she? Yep in
[06:22.540 -> 06:26.000] Manchester. Absolutely the best city in the world after Norwich.
[06:26.000 -> 06:29.000] So as well as hearing from Jill, we also spoke with Alex Scott.
[06:29.000 -> 06:32.000] I mean, this was an incredibly moving and brave conversation
[06:32.000 -> 06:34.000] that she shared with us.
[06:34.000 -> 06:36.000] Here's Alex.
[06:36.000 -> 06:39.000] My version of high performance,
[06:39.000 -> 06:41.000] I'm really big on mindsets, to be honest.
[06:41.000 -> 06:47.760] So I think the difference between being a good athlete or in that bracket, the high
[06:47.760 -> 06:53.160] performance part is about that mindset that takes you to that next level to be really
[06:53.160 -> 06:59.200] elite and keep you there performing at such a high performance.
[06:59.200 -> 07:03.440] Which I think is coming out more and more in the sport world and not even just in sport
[07:03.440 -> 07:08.960] world, I think in business, like how can you tap into things to help, you know, keep you there.
[07:08.960 -> 07:11.040] So where did that mindset come from then?
[07:11.040 -> 07:15.960] Are we talking about, you know, an 11 year old Alex Scott who was like mentally solid
[07:15.960 -> 07:20.640] and stable and pushing herself to the limit or as we often find with people, is this a
[07:20.640 -> 07:21.640] process of growth?
[07:21.640 -> 07:26.640] I would say it's a process of growth. And for me, understanding myself more,
[07:26.640 -> 07:29.160] but I think when I go back to where I grew up
[07:29.160 -> 07:32.160] in East London, playing in a football cage,
[07:32.160 -> 07:35.320] there was kind of a survival instinct in there.
[07:35.320 -> 07:36.840] You know, having to fight for my place
[07:36.840 -> 07:38.280] in the football cage with the boys,
[07:38.280 -> 07:41.240] having to prove people that I was good enough
[07:41.240 -> 07:43.960] and having a dream that I wanted to get
[07:43.960 -> 07:48.720] beyond that football cage. So I think there was a lot of elements in that. And I think you throw in on top of
[07:48.720 -> 07:54.640] that fear, fear of being stuck or fear of not being able to look after myself. I always
[07:54.640 -> 08:00.080] say that, you know, I managed to get 140 caps for England and sometimes you'd have teammates
[08:00.080 -> 08:04.780] or people assuming that you were the favorite. That's why you got picked. But I actually,
[08:04.780 -> 08:09.360] every game I played for England had a strong element of fear that it would be my last,
[08:09.360 -> 08:14.320] that it was taken away, that I had to go out and be the best because, you know, I might not get
[08:14.320 -> 08:18.480] picked for the next game. I think that's a really powerful thing to share with people because
[08:18.480 -> 08:22.560] people see you and assume there's no fear because life's successful. What about the Alex Scott
[08:22.560 -> 08:28.200] sitting in front of us today? How prevalent is fear in the life you live now?
[08:28.200 -> 08:34.360] It's always there. And to be honest, I think that's what keeps me going, working so hard
[08:34.360 -> 08:38.600] because it's always that I've got to prove people that I'm good enough or flip that as
[08:38.600 -> 08:42.720] well as I don't want to let anyone down. That's then showed that faith in me to put me in
[08:42.720 -> 08:47.080] a position or giving me a job or picked me in the first team for Arsenal.
[08:47.080 -> 08:51.600] So I suppose it's that fear and I've got, you know, in my performance, thank someone
[08:51.600 -> 08:55.600] for believing in me and seeing some something in me.
[08:55.600 -> 08:57.600] So we've heard from three players.
[08:57.600 -> 08:58.800] I think we should hear from a coach.
[08:58.800 -> 09:02.320] And actually, before we hear from Phil Neville, he gave us probably the greatest summary of
[09:02.320 -> 09:04.040] high performance we've ever heard, didn't he?
[09:04.040 -> 09:06.000] Yeah. So we met Phil opposite the Old Trafford football ground where he first made his name and where a'r hyn y mae'n digwydd yma, yw'r hyn y mae Phil Neville wedi'i ddweud. Fe wnaethon ni'r cyfathrebu mwyaf o heithio'n fawr yr oeddwn ni wedi clywed, oedd o?
[09:06.000 -> 09:08.000] Ie, fe wnaethon ni gwrthdod Phil y ffordd
[09:08.000 -> 09:10.000] y ffordd o'r ffordd chwarae'r ffordd chwarae'r ffordd
[09:10.000 -> 09:12.000] lle roeddwn i'n gynted yn ei enw
[09:12.000 -> 09:14.000] a lle mae'r brif brwydr a phai arall
[09:14.000 -> 09:16.000] o'r generaeth honno wedi seilio'r hotel.
[09:16.000 -> 09:18.000] Ac roeddwn i'n dweud i ni bod e'n gweithio'n fawr
[09:18.000 -> 09:20.000] yn y ffordd y gallwch chi, gyda'r hyn rydych chi'n cael
[09:20.000 -> 09:22.000] yn y moment rydych chi'n ymwneud â'i.
[09:22.000 -> 09:24.000] Ac roedd hynny'n llawer o'r hyn yr oedd yn ei ddysgrifio
[09:24.000 -> 09:26.520] i ni o'r hyn yr oedd yn ceisio ei ddangos yn y Lyonesses pan oedd yn ymwneud â hynny. And that was very much what he was describing to us of what he was trying to instill in the lionesses when he was in charge there.
[09:26.520 -> 09:27.360] Here he is.
[09:27.360 -> 09:28.680] This is what happened when Phil Neville
[09:28.680 -> 09:30.460] spoke to us on the podcast.
[09:32.720 -> 09:35.040] Until you've lived in the shoes,
[09:35.040 -> 09:37.480] you'd never know how they're gonna feel.
[09:37.480 -> 09:42.480] And I went into the women's job and my sister,
[09:43.640 -> 09:47.400] my sister used to say all this and that and used to say, get on with
[09:47.400 -> 09:48.400] it.
[09:48.400 -> 09:49.400] You'll be all right.
[09:49.400 -> 09:50.400] Oh, you were on the telly last week.
[09:50.400 -> 09:51.400] You'll be all right.
[09:51.400 -> 09:54.880] And then when you're actually living in the shoes of a female athlete, you think this
[09:54.880 -> 09:56.880] is not right.
[09:56.880 -> 10:06.320] The prejudice, the homophobia, the sexism, the lack of equality. Every single day is a fight.
[10:06.320 -> 10:07.680] Every single day you think you're winning,
[10:07.680 -> 10:08.960] then you take us two steps back.
[10:08.960 -> 10:11.220] Every single day you fight,
[10:12.280 -> 10:15.640] you fight like you possibly can to make things better
[10:15.640 -> 10:19.200] for a group of girls that are the most unbelievable group
[10:19.200 -> 10:22.440] of people I've ever been involved in all my life.
[10:22.440 -> 10:24.940] And some days you win, some days you lose.
[10:24.940 -> 10:28.640] And it's, until you weigh the obstacles,
[10:28.640 -> 10:31.160] and like I say, when I was a footballer,
[10:31.160 -> 10:32.720] my sister used to come home from these camps
[10:32.720 -> 10:34.720] and she used to go to training on a Sunday morning
[10:34.720 -> 10:37.840] in East Grinstead, three hours there, three hours back.
[10:37.840 -> 10:38.840] Oh, well done, how are you doing?
[10:38.840 -> 10:39.960] Good session.
[10:39.960 -> 10:43.040] But actually, you look back now and think, how ignorant.
[10:43.040 -> 10:45.680] Ignorant was me and my brother
[10:45.680 -> 10:47.760] to like actually what she was going through.
[10:47.760 -> 10:50.320] Why didn't we put a driver on for her?
[10:50.320 -> 10:51.720] Why don't we put a driver on for her?
[10:51.720 -> 10:56.720] Why don't we fund something a little bit better back then
[10:57.920 -> 10:59.760] than now getting now?
[10:59.760 -> 11:02.320] But because you're not in the shoes of that person,
[11:02.320 -> 11:04.520] because you're not in the shoes of a female,
[11:05.800 -> 11:06.800] you just never know.
[11:06.800 -> 11:07.800] You just never know.
[11:07.800 -> 11:12.360] And I can actually sort of like relate now to people saying, oh, we've made great strides.
[11:12.360 -> 11:13.760] Oh, we're doing okay.
[11:13.760 -> 11:16.320] Well, actually there's still...
[11:16.320 -> 11:19.920] Still my girls are fighting every single day now.
[11:19.920 -> 11:20.920] We were winning.
[11:20.920 -> 11:23.680] For two years, we were beginning to break down barriers.
[11:23.680 -> 11:27.560] I think we've took a massive step back now and people have forgot female sport.
[11:27.560 -> 11:31.760] No netball, no hockey, no female sport played for the last three to four months.
[11:31.760 -> 11:37.240] Not even on the agenda of any boardroom in any sport in any industry.
[11:37.240 -> 11:41.960] And I'm like, to change that, you're going to have to change at the top.
[11:41.960 -> 11:42.960] You have to change at the top.
[11:42.960 -> 11:45.040] You have to get people, you have to get females, you have to get black people on the top. You're going to have to change at the top. You're going to have to get people, you're going to have to get females, you're going
[11:45.040 -> 11:50.080] to have to get black people on the boards before it starts infiltrating down. So I'm
[11:50.080 -> 11:54.560] going on it from a point of doing that. It's been the biggest learning experience ever.
[11:54.560 -> 11:59.560] When in my first camp, normally when you get a new player and you sing a song and everyone
[11:59.560 -> 12:04.920] films it, they stand up there and they speak about their career, their life, their obstacles.
[12:04.920 -> 12:09.040] And literally there was one girl, Abby McManus, I'll never forget. She stood up there, she
[12:09.040 -> 12:14.200] told the journey. I had tears in my eyes, tears in my eyes about the journeys, the fact
[12:14.200 -> 12:18.560] that she was a kit lady. Then she got changed and went out onto the pitch, then came back
[12:18.560 -> 12:22.800] in and washed everyone's kit. And I was like, that didn't happen. Do you know what I mean?
[12:22.800 -> 12:26.200] But we were ignorant to all that because actually people probably didn't care
[12:26.200 -> 12:27.920] because our lives were okay.
[12:27.920 -> 12:31.540] So now when obviously I'm coming to the end of my time
[12:31.540 -> 12:32.880] with the Lionesses, I'm thinking,
[12:32.880 -> 12:36.440] I'm not finished with promoting female sports,
[12:36.440 -> 12:37.360] women's athletes.
[12:37.360 -> 12:42.280] And because ultimately, until you've lived in the arena
[12:42.280 -> 12:44.360] with the most amazing set of girls
[12:44.360 -> 12:50.000] who all they want to do is do the best thing they possibly can for the coach, for the organisation.
[12:50.000 -> 12:53.000] It's been like a breath of fresh air.
[12:53.000 -> 12:57.000] So there you go, Phil Neville on the High Performance Podcast.
[12:57.000 -> 12:59.000] I'm cheering on the Lionesses, you know, this summer.
[12:59.000 -> 13:00.000] Do you think they can?
[13:00.000 -> 13:01.000] I think so.
[13:01.000 -> 13:06.000] I think, as we often say, confidence comes from evidence and they've got plenty of evidence that they're capable
[13:06.000 -> 13:09.700] Yeah, and you know that people are often saying when is Serena Vigman coming on high performance?
[13:09.700 -> 13:13.880] Can I just point out not only have we asked we've asked five or six different people
[13:13.880 -> 13:15.880] We've tried to attack this from numerous different routes
[13:15.880 -> 13:20.480] Like we will not rest until Serena comes on high performance and tells us how she turned around
[13:20.920 -> 13:25.040] The mindset and the results of the Lionesses will we? No we
[13:25.040 -> 13:28.360] won't but I think the fact that we haven't quite yet been able to get her
[13:28.360 -> 13:33.440] on is an indication of her laser light focus on the task in hand and hopefully
[13:33.440 -> 13:37.400] once she can reflect on a successful World Cup campaign she might give
[13:37.400 -> 13:41.720] herself a little bit of time to come and share those insights. Serena the door is
