[02:59.920 -> 03:08.620] anomaly in the fight game. He was a dental technician while he was also studying at university and also pursuing his career as a professional fighter so
[03:08.620 -> 03:12.380] he's a guy that's had a full agenda but he's made the most out of every
[03:12.380 -> 03:16.060] opportunity that he's had and when we sat down with him I just thought he was
[03:16.060 -> 03:19.840] so rich in his stories and the lessons that he taught.

[03:21.340 -> 03:25.600] Well given that he's fighting Lee Wood tomorrow night, that's going to be a

[04:25.600 -> 04:26.400] You take bits of confidence when you're sparring and you're working alongside people who are better than you as a younger lad. So my dad never wanted me to just
[04:32.160 -> 04:36.560] go in and spar with lads my own size and weight, beat them up and then yeah give me a pound back. You know, he'd always find reason or room to criticise and I always wanted to make sure,
[04:36.560 -> 04:40.960] I wanted praise off my dad, I didn't want him to say, okay well done that lad, but he always wanted
[04:40.960 -> 04:45.000] to push me as well. So I'm not sparring lads my own way.
[04:45.000 -> 04:47.000] I'm sparring lads that are heavier than me, more experienced than me.
[04:47.000 -> 04:49.000] And I'm having hard, hard nights.
[04:49.000 -> 04:55.000] But then when it comes to the fight, that's where his bit of mastermind
[04:55.000 -> 05:00.000] as a fucking psychologist, as my dad, and as a trainer worked.
[05:00.000 -> 05:03.000] He used to say to me walking to the ring, he said,
[05:03.000 -> 05:06.000] this lad's not been mixed in the same company as what you've mixed in.
[05:06.000 -> 05:08.000] You've been mixed in with pros,
[05:08.000 -> 05:11.000] you've been sparring with lads who are national champions.
[05:11.000 -> 05:12.000] What has this lad done?
[05:12.000 -> 05:13.000] He's not even got to our level.
[05:13.000 -> 05:15.000] And you're thinking, he ain't been at the same level,
[05:15.000 -> 05:17.000] he ain't put the same kind of work in.
[05:17.000 -> 05:20.000] I've been coming on from school, I've been coming on from work
[05:20.000 -> 05:21.000] and going straight to the gym.
[05:21.000 -> 05:23.000] I've been doing that before going to...
[05:23.000 -> 05:27.600] He ain't been to where I've been and all of a sudden you start adding that
[05:27.600 -> 05:29.400] and then you get win, then another win,
[05:29.400 -> 05:30.920] then another win and that keeps on building
[05:30.920 -> 05:32.040] and keeps on building.

[05:35.800 -> 05:38.600] in those really huge moments is probably vital.

[05:43.560 -> 05:46.400] and the blue brain is the smart part of your brain.

[05:47.480 -> 05:50.480] He's trying to stay in that sort of blue brain thinking.

[05:52.280 -> 05:54.440] he's almost reminded himself of the hard work,
[05:54.440 -> 05:55.800] the sacrifices that he's done,
[05:55.800 -> 05:58.760] rather than allow himself to focus on what he can't do
[05:58.760 -> 06:01.440] or what the gaps in his knowledge might be.
[06:01.440 -> 06:04.360] He's focused on the solid foundations

[06:06.120 -> 06:10.840] Is there also something in that though that he, by reminding himself of all the hard work
[06:10.840 -> 06:15.560] that he's done and the journey he's taken to get to this point, it just adds a layer
[06:15.560 -> 06:19.600] of confidence and a reminder that, you know, the imposter syndrome might be there, the
[06:19.600 -> 06:23.400] fear and the doubt might be there, but he and anyone else that is in that position has
[06:23.400 -> 06:35.600] earned the right to be there? Yeah, well that reminds me of another clip that I want to play where he speaks very much around taking responsibility for his preparation and his performance as a fighter.

[06:39.900 -> 06:48.000] As a kid growing up in Leeds on a council estate, it's easy to get fought. You know, it's easy to fall into what everyone else is doing.
[06:48.000 -> 06:50.640] So what everyone else was doing on our estate
[06:50.640 -> 06:54.240] were nicking cars, sniffing glue,
[06:54.240 -> 06:56.720] smoking, whatever, drinking on a Friday night.
[06:56.720 -> 06:58.480] And why do you not want to do that?

[06:59.520 -> 07:01.400] You know, it's the same thing.
[07:01.400 -> 07:03.000] Why do you want to spend your time three times a week

[07:53.400 -> 08:00.120] It didn't take much for me to, you know, I have to be told again, if I was going to be a

[08:02.360 -> 08:05.000] So from, like, I think you said that about eight years old and I've been playing for about two years, but that would it, I would was going to be a boxer. So from, I think you said that

[08:08.400 -> 08:12.720] I was dedicated to it then, you know. When I was getting into a teenage lad,
[08:12.720 -> 08:16.800] hanging about with my mates, yeah they'd be having a drink and going to house parties on
[08:16.800 -> 08:20.680] Friday night, but instead of me having a drink, I'd take a bottle of water with me, I'd take a
[08:20.680 -> 08:24.960] bottle of Luxur, instead of getting the bus home, you know, bus three miles home, I'd jog
[08:24.960 -> 08:26.100] home instead. And that was just miles home, I jog home instead.
[08:26.100 -> 08:27.700] And that was just my mentality.
[08:27.700 -> 08:31.400] I didn't want to be wasting anyone else's time.

[08:34.680 -> 08:39.500] Well, really powerful because how often have we heard that saying that excuses remove the
[08:39.500 -> 08:44.680] learning and what Josh is saying there is that he has to take complete accountability
[08:44.680 -> 08:45.960] for what he does in the shadows
[08:46.280 -> 08:49.980] Always emerges under the bright lights and that's what he's saying
[08:49.980 -> 08:55.960] If he's if he's taken a shortcut doesn't matter if anyone's allowed that to happen or they've turned a blind eye to it
[08:56.040 -> 08:58.920] He's the one that's going to have to live with the consequences of it
[08:58.920 -> 09:05.540] So I think understanding that again builds his confidence that he knows that he's not
[09:05.540 -> 09:11.160] taken a shortcut, he's not done a misstep, he's not tried to take the easy route, so
[09:11.160 -> 09:15.660] that when it gets tough in the fight, he knows that he's got the capacity to go to those
[09:15.660 -> 09:16.660] dark places.
[09:16.660 -> 09:20.900] And I think all of us can learn a little bit from not going to that place of blame and
[09:20.900 -> 09:24.980] fault and, you know, using excuses, which does remove the learning you're right, which
[09:24.980 -> 09:27.940] also is us relinquishing control. Anything else you'd
[09:27.940 -> 09:32.720] like to share? I think one of the most powerful extracts from any of our 200
[09:32.720 -> 09:36.880] plus episodes Jake has been the conversation Josh shared with us about
[09:36.880 -> 09:49.000] the power of friendships. As a young lad I can can find countless scenarios where I was thinking I can't do this no more.
[09:49.000 -> 09:53.000] At one point I was studying at Leeds University.
[09:53.000 -> 09:58.000] Anyone who studies at university knows those 3,000 word assignments,
[09:58.000 -> 10:01.000] especially when it's on teeth and the mandible.
[10:01.000 -> 10:04.000] It's not the most exciting thing. You go into lectures and you're listening to teeth
[10:04.000 -> 10:05.840] and the structure of a tooth and the root and that.
[10:06.960 -> 10:09.880] I mean, you could fall asleep just me saying, talking about that.
[10:10.360 -> 10:17.320] Doing that, working four days a week, nine to five, sometimes ten to six, training every day.

[10:25.040 -> 10:30.480] going to pubs all around Leeds saying, listen, do you like boxing? Do you remember watching

[10:34.880 -> 10:39.440] you know, bring Leeds a bit of glory. I know his football team is not great, but follow my journey,
[10:39.440 -> 10:46.840] mate, and we'll have some good times along the way. Trying to do that on times when I should have been really spending it with pals,
