Welcome to our 200th Episode Special with Dan Carter, recorded live at Hackney Empire!
We first spoke to Dan, All-Blacks legend and one of the greatest rugby players of all time, almost 2 years ago. He returns to the podcast to discuss how his view of high performance, and his overall mindset, has evolved since the first conversation we had with him. He shares the struggles he faced after leaving the All Blacks and the issues and fears this brought up for him: navigating change, loss of identity and hiding from retirement . They discuss the idea of repurposing, finding a new purpose after a big life change and what his life looks like now.
Dan shares his key lessons from being an All Black, what the culture looked like and how crucial journalling has been in fulfilling his goals. They reflect on the key moments in Dan’s life, including his 2011 injury, and how he’s transformed his struggle into positive learnings.

[01:32.360 -> 01:37.400] to come. Hi there you're listening to High Performance the award-winning
[01:37.400 -> 01:41.000] podcast that unlocks the minds of some of the most fascinating people on the
[01:41.000 -> 01:45.220] planet. I'm Jake Humphrey and alongside Professor Damien Hughes we
[01:45.220 -> 01:49.540] learn from the stories, successes and struggles of our guests allowing us all
[01:49.540 -> 01:55.300] to explore, to be challenged and to grow. Here's what's coming up today.
[01:55.300 -> 02:01.300] You forget to be thankful for all the things that you've got and often you
[02:01.300 -> 02:25.000] find yourself complaining at all the things you you don't have and wish you Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, I just cruise and drift through life and that's not high performance.
[02:25.000 -> 02:29.000] It's not where I've come from, it's not where I want to go in the future.
[02:30.000 -> 02:33.000] I asked the doctor, is my World Cup over?
[02:33.000 -> 02:34.000] She said yes.
[02:34.000 -> 02:41.000] I burst into tears, went back to the hotel room, I was angry, I was sad.
[02:42.000 -> 02:45.000] And I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason.
[02:45.000 -> 02:47.000] But in that moment, around this time,
[02:47.000 -> 02:49.000] nothing made sense at all.
[02:50.000 -> 02:52.000] To be involved in a Rugby World Cup final,
[02:52.000 -> 02:58.000] help the team make history by being the first team to win back-to-back World Cups,
[02:58.000 -> 03:03.000] be the first all-black side to win a World Cup outside of New Zealand.
[03:03.000 -> 03:06.080] A lot of that was off the learnings that I
[03:06.080 -> 03:12.640] got from that injury there. So all of a sudden, what I believed, things do happen for a reason,
[03:12.640 -> 03:15.800] that that was just part of the story.
[03:15.800 -> 03:21.920] So welcome my friends to episode 200 of High Performance. I mean, I can't actually believe
[03:21.920 -> 03:31.900] that we've reached 200 episodes. In that time, we've managed 50 million downloads of the podcast across podcast platforms, tens
[03:31.900 -> 03:35.360] of millions of views on our YouTube channel as well. And before we get into the episode,
[03:35.360 -> 03:39.160] I really just want to take this moment to acknowledge all of you, the people who've
[03:39.160 -> 03:42.440] been with us on this journey, the people who are part of the high performance community,
[03:42.440 -> 03:46.120] the people who understand what we're trying to do with this podcast, the people who are part of the high-performance community, the people who understand what we're trying to do with this podcast, the people who've
[03:46.120 -> 03:49.560] shared the lessons and the learnings that they've taken from this. And yeah, I
[03:49.560 -> 03:53.280] know that, you know, we've got senior politicians around the world and people
[03:53.280 -> 03:58.320] running and competing for and managing some of the biggest sports teams on the
[03:58.320 -> 04:02.880] planet listening to this podcast, but actually it's people like you, people who
[04:02.880 -> 04:05.360] are just getting on with their lives every
[04:05.360 -> 04:10.600] single day, with good days, with bad days, with struggles, with doubts, with imposter
[04:10.600 -> 04:17.280] syndrome, with fears. You are the people that we've created this podcast for. And honestly,
[04:17.280 -> 04:21.440] to get the messages that we get from you makes the world of difference to us. So welcome
[04:21.440 -> 04:25.480] to episode 200. And what we've decided to do is revisit one of
[04:25.480 -> 04:28.240] the greatest guests that's ever joined us on High Performance. So we first
[04:28.240 -> 04:33.200] spoke to this man Dan Carter, one of the greatest rugby players of his generation,
[04:33.200 -> 04:37.880] a true all-black legend a couple of years ago and then we thought we need to
[04:37.880 -> 04:40.840] do this again because we've never had an episode with more downloads, more
[04:40.840 -> 04:50.640] reaction, more comments from all of you. So we got Dan in London on the stage at the Hackney Empire in front of 1,200 people and we
[04:50.640 -> 04:55.000] just spoke about the power of leadership. He's just recently written a book about
[04:55.000 -> 04:59.620] it and we delve into some of the key points that are in that book. You're
[04:59.620 -> 05:02.040] gonna love this conversation so let's just get straight to it.
[05:02.040 -> 05:09.880] Episode 200 of High Performance, Thank you for your incredible support on behalf of myself, Damien and the whole team for getting
[05:09.880 -> 05:15.240] us to this point. The most exciting thing is, I think we're only just beginning. Let's get
[05:15.240 -> 05:20.360] to it then. And by the way, the crowd at the Hackney Empire were incredible. Listen how
[05:20.360 -> 05:45.840] loud the crowd were when we introduced our guest onto stage. Board games and card games are buy one get one free. Save on great gifts for everyone like TVs
[05:45.840 -> 05:51.520] and appliances. And the first 100 customers on Black Friday will get free gift cards too.

[05:57.200 -> 05:59.040] Fred Meyer, fresh for everyone.
[06:02.640 -> 06:06.840] On our podcast, we love to highlight businesses that are doing things a better way so you
[06:06.840 -> 06:11.900] can live a better life and that's why when I found Mint Mobile I had to share.
[06:11.900 -> 06:16.580] So Mint Mobile ditched retail stores and all those overhead costs and instead sells their
[06:16.580 -> 06:19.920] phone plans online and passes those savings to you.

[06:49.400 -> 06:53.800] So say goodbye to your overpriced wireless plans, those jaw-dropping monthly bills,

[08:27.000 -> 08:28.000] Kia ora!
[08:28.000 -> 08:29.000] Kia ora!

[08:41.000 -> 08:42.000] Kia ora!
[08:42.000 -> 08:43.000] Kia ora!
[08:43.000 -> 08:44.000] Kia ora!
[08:44.000 -> 08:46.800] Kia ora! Kia ora! Kia ora! Kia ora! Kia ora! We listened to that episode about 20,000 times. So the majority of those downloads were my mother, so it's probably not a true reflection
[08:46.800 -> 08:49.620] of actually how good that episode was.
[08:49.620 -> 08:54.640] Thank you so much, Mrs. Carter, for the support you've given your son.
[08:54.640 -> 08:58.160] Let's talk then about the first time that you came on the High Performance Podcast.
[08:58.160 -> 09:00.880] We always start with the question, and you know what the question is.
[09:00.880 -> 09:02.840] What is your definition of high performance?
[09:02.840 -> 09:04.680] I've got your first answer here.
[09:04.680 -> 09:08.280] You said, I absolutely love the word high performance. It just takes me back
[09:08.280 -> 09:12.960] to my career and for me it's all about controlling your mind. So that was
[09:12.960 -> 09:19.320] November 2021. We're now here quite a lot later. How has that changed?
[09:19.320 -> 09:23.520] And through that time from since we spoke last time, I just started working
[09:23.520 -> 09:29.000] on the book that you've all received tonight-rounded in my answer, and it's something I thought about because I knew you were going to probe the question, and actually I thought, well, I better listen to our last episode.
[09:29.000 -> 09:45.000] And with four young kids at home, I don't often get a chance to listen to podcasts at home, so I listen to the old podcast when I'm driving in the car. So a couple of weeks ago when I knew I was coming in to the show, I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was listening to the podcast, and I was going to play around a golf about an hour and a half north of Auckland, which is where I live now.
[09:45.000 -> 09:51.000] And I was like, right, actually, I'm going to listen to my podcast, you know, learnings around dealing with problems.
[09:51.000 -> 09:53.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[09:53.000 -> 09:55.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[09:55.000 -> 09:57.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[09:57.000 -> 09:59.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[09:59.000 -> 10:01.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[10:01.000 -> 10:03.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast.
[10:03.000 -> 10:08.000] And I was like, I'm going to listen to that podcast., right, actually, I'm going to listen to my podcast, you know,
[10:08.000 -> 10:11.000] learnings around dealing with pressure, controlling your mind.
[10:11.000 -> 10:13.000] This is going to be great for my golf game.
[10:13.000 -> 10:16.000] I think it's probably one of the best golf games that I'm ever going to have,
[10:16.000 -> 10:17.000] listening to myself.
[10:17.000 -> 10:19.000] And don't get me wrong, I hate the sound of my own voice.
[10:19.000 -> 10:23.000] It was awful listening to that episode.
[10:23.000 -> 10:27.000] You know, I got up on the first tee and just shanked it.
[10:27.000 -> 10:31.000] I hit it 10 meters in front of me, but it's alright because I know about dealing with resilience.
[10:31.000 -> 10:34.000] I can bounce back from this. I'm strong.
[10:34.000 -> 10:40.000] I take all these learnings from the setbacks that I had in my career to overcome that first shot.
[10:40.000 -> 11:47.480] 18 holes later, I had the worst round of golf that I've ever, ever played in my life. I'm a 15 handicapper. I normally shoot sort of low 90s. 18 holes kemara, mai i mewra i mewra i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i golfau i I listened to my own podcast and thought that I was going to have the round of my life and I was like, bugger it, I'm going to tell them. You know what the problem was? I listened to my own podcast and they fell to the floor, started just cracking up, laughing. So I'm not really selling my book here. So I've got to be careful what I say. o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o'r pōpūtua mātou, o, te pōr, either individually or as a team,
[11:47.480 -> 11:53.480] to seek excellence in everything that you're trying to achieve
[11:53.480 -> 11:55.480] and things that you really care about.
[11:55.480 -> 11:58.480] So I guess my answer now is a little bit

I'm not telling you if you do this, you'll guarantee success. All I'm trying to share is some of the learnings and some of the knowledge that I learned from, you know, playing what I think is the best sport in the world rugby for for close I had role models, All Blacks that I looked up to.
[13:28.000 -> 13:32.000] They encouraged me to go out there and live my dreams.
[13:32.000 -> 13:37.000] And I was one of the lucky ones that was able to live my dream of becoming an All Black.
[13:37.000 -> 13:43.000] So when I had a chance to reflect on my career, which is something you don't get to do when you're playing,
[13:43.000 -> 14:25.920] but having hung up the boots, I had a chance to look back and what was I most proud about? karerea, karerea karerea, karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karerea karereia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i kia i k oes i mewna o un o'r mailioi mailioi i sport, gyda'r All Blacks, a'r chwarae i mewnoho,

[15:26.000 -> 15:28.000] So that was my purpose.
[15:28.000 -> 15:33.000] And that's what was driving me every morning I got out of bed.
[15:33.000 -> 15:35.000] How can I strive to be an All Black great?
[15:35.000 -> 15:40.000] So I had real direction, real clarity with what I wanted to achieve.
[15:40.000 -> 16:25.000] But unfortunately, you can't play sport forever. [16:25.000 -> 16:31.000] I had some real anger because they cancelled the season. I wasn't able to finish my career on my terms.
[16:31.000 -> 16:36.000] And I was expecting him to say, oh, bad luck. You know, it's a shame.
[16:36.000 -> 16:43.000] You know, you can't go back to Japan and finish the season. But he goes, so you're not going back to Japan?
[16:43.000 -> 16:45.000] And I was like, no. He goes, oh, that's the best news I've ever heard. He gave me a big hug.
[16:45.000 -> 16:47.000] I was like, wow, okay.
[16:47.000 -> 16:49.000] That just put everything into perspective.
[16:49.000 -> 16:52.000] And that's the same year I finished my career.
[16:52.000 -> 16:57.000] And when something you've put your heart and soul into
[16:57.000 -> 16:59.000] for close to 20 years finishes,
[16:59.000 -> 17:02.000] then you're trying to navigate change.
[17:02.000 -> 17:29.000] And for me, there was a real loss of identity. Who am I now that I'm not a rugby player? o 20 mau, o te reo, iaroi iaroi iaro. Iaroi iaro iaroi iaro. Iaroi iaro iaro iaro to be able to help other people that are going through a similar situation to what I'm going through.
[17:29.000 -> 17:36.000] And I ended up meeting a guy called Kevin Roberts, who had worked with us for a long time.
[17:36.000 -> 17:41.000] And he was a really good friend of mine. And he was a really good friend of mine.

[18:05.000 -> 18:09.000] What are my characters? What are my beliefs? What are things that I'll never do?
[18:09.000 -> 18:15.000] What are things that I want to take from my previous life as a rugby player that I want to take into this next chapter of my life?
[18:15.000 -> 18:17.000] And all of a sudden I had some framework.
[18:17.000 -> 18:24.000] But it was a really valuable process for me to go through this repurposing process with Kevin.
[18:24.000 -> 18:29.000] It just gave me some framework and some direction to walk towards.
[18:29.000 -> 19:13.000] So one of the questions Kevin asked you that you write about in the book is he challenges you to be both a poet and a plumber, which is a really interesting evoc Reid Hoffman who talked a lot about that and I was lucky enough to interview him and he was talking about the strategy of the poet and the plumber and needing poets, but working together to making sure that you're striving to be successful and everything's running smoothly within a team environment.
[19:13.000 -> 19:26.000] And then you spoke about when in that same chapter, when you attempted to take to be the plumber of introducing high performance as a homeschooling parent. kaupapa tātou kaipaiai. Ie, mātai iaro. Ia tātou kaipaiai.

[19:54.000 -> 19:59.000] Then at nine o'clock we're doing maths, nine thirty we're moving into our reading.
[19:59.000 -> 20:02.000] Right, you can go outside, have a break, go play some football.
[20:02.000 -> 20:25.000] Coming back in at ten thirty, we're going to start some writing. [20:48.520 -> 20:52.360] family, because when you're an all-black, right, the purpose is very clear, like you
[20:52.360 -> 20:56.360] enter a World Cup, you want to win the World Cup, so everyone knows that. What advice would

[20:59.800 -> 21:03.920] looking for their purpose, but they live now, as you do, in a kind of family dynamic, where

[22:38.000 -> 22:39.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:39.000 -> 22:40.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:40.000 -> 22:41.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:41.000 -> 22:42.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:42.000 -> 22:43.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:43.000 -> 22:44.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[22:44.000 -> 22:47.920] Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. in my life but it is so much harder when you're not in this you know little environment like a
[22:47.920 -> 22:54.080] sporting team. So what is it now then like you can you sum your purpose up in a sentence? To be
[22:54.080 -> 22:59.760] globally admired and in the art of winning so everything that I do it's and it's not something
[22:59.760 -> 23:08.000] I'll achieve but it's something I'm walking towards and wanting to make a difference with everything that I do.
[23:08.000 -> 23:12.000] But then within that you need structure. How does that look?
[23:12.000 -> 23:16.000] So, you know, I'm constantly setting goals for myself each week.
[23:16.000 -> 23:20.000] I'm making sure that I do what I say I'm going to do.
[23:20.000 -> 23:25.920] I'm very organised, very planned, making sure I have balance and it's not all work-focused.
[23:25.920 -> 23:27.320] I'm in this amazing transition.
[23:27.320 -> 23:31.520] I've been able to spend a lot more time with my family, have flexibility, so I'm still
[23:31.520 -> 23:35.800] navigating that purpose and growing it.
[23:35.800 -> 23:41.320] But it is a challenging thing, and if you're sitting there going, gee, what is my purpose?
[23:41.320 -> 24:33.000] It's quite a confrontational, challenging, tough question. Ia oehio i tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tātou, tānau tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou tātou I just know that the direction that gives you is, you know, it really does help you go to that next level and elevate you to achieve things that you never thought you'd achieve.

[28:18.000 -> 28:45.000] It's something that people struggle with often, not just who to hang out with, but also how you make a decision not to spend time with. [29:12.000 -> 29:26.080] So, you know, they're the ones that will help you keep grounded, keep down to earth and challenge you. So, you know, it's really important having people like that in your group. So can you give us an example, Dan, because you also talk in the book
[29:26.080 -> 29:28.720] that your success wasn't this linear straight line.
[29:28.720 -> 29:31.000] You had setbacks, you had moments
[29:31.000 -> 29:33.920] where you disappointed yourself.
[29:33.920 -> 29:36.320] Was there ever an occasion that you can share with us
[29:36.320 -> 29:38.760] when one of these people in your inner circle
[29:38.760 -> 29:40.920] gave you the tap on the shoulder
[29:40.920 -> 29:43.880] and gave you a bit of feedback that resonated?
[29:44.840 -> 30:25.000] We had incredible leaders in the All Blacks, a whakarau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, a whakau i wahanau, ai, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei In London called the church that used to open on Sunday.
[30:25.000 -> 30:26.280] So we're trying to get to the church.
[30:26.280 -> 30:27.680] So it was about 10 o'clock in the morning
[30:27.680 -> 30:30.560] on a Sunday morning, and we suddenly sobered up
[30:30.560 -> 30:32.760] and realized what the hell we're doing in London
[30:32.760 -> 30:36.000] when we've got a game in a week in Cardiff.
[30:36.000 -> 30:39.640] So we raced back and we got obviously caught out.
[30:39.640 -> 30:42.240] And like this environment,
[30:42.240 -> 31:27.000] you know, it doesn't accept poor decisions like that. We weren't thinking of the team and putting the team first. And I can assure you, you didn't want to let the team down again.
[31:27.000 -> 31:31.000] I felt like I'd let the team down, I felt like I'd let my family and friends down.
[31:31.000 -> 31:36.000] It was one of the most challenging weeks of my rugby career.
[31:36.000 -> 31:40.000] And because my mind started sort of thinking,
[31:40.000 -> 31:47.000] and I was just burning all this energy thinking about what I'd done and who I'd hurt.
[31:47.000 -> 31:50.000] I was thinking, I've got a test match coming up.
[31:50.000 -> 31:57.000] That was actually the first time I knocked on the door of the psychologist, Gilbert Inoka, the team psychologist.
[31:57.000 -> 32:10.000] I was like, I need help. I can't focus on the game. I'm just burning energy. I don't want to train, I don't want to play. And back then, I've been playing for the All Blacks for three years,
[32:10.000 -> 32:14.000] that if you're spending one-on-one time with a psychologist,
[32:14.000 -> 32:17.000] your teammates think you're a bit of a wacko and something's wrong with you.
[32:17.000 -> 32:20.000] It's amazing because at the end of your career,
[32:20.000 -> 32:23.000] if you're not seeing the psychologist, your teammates are going,
[32:23.000 -> 32:25.000] well, why not? You want to be the best player in the world. So everyone was seeing the psychologist. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou. Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:25.000 -> 32:26.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:26.000 -> 32:27.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:27.000 -> 32:28.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:28.000 -> 32:29.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:29.000 -> 32:30.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:30.000 -> 32:31.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:31.000 -> 32:32.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:32.000 -> 32:33.000] Hei, koutou koutou.
[32:33.000 -> 32:34.000] Hei, koutou koutou.

I went on to have a fantastic game, scored the most points the North Black has ever scored against Wales in that game.
[33:51.440 -> 33:57.360] And a lot of it was off the back of not the mistake and the piss up, I can assure you that,
[33:57.360 -> 34:00.400] but actually like learning to control my mind.
[34:00.400 -> 34:06.000] And it was one of the first times I'd spent time with a a psychologist on on a one-on-one basis and the growth
[34:06.000 -> 34:08.000] That I got from that was incredible
[34:10.320 -> 34:15.600] Today's podcast is brought to you in association with a g1 and it is one of my
[34:16.720 -> 34:21.020] Non-negotiables one of the things that I make sure that every single day I bring into my life
[34:21.020 -> 34:24.520] So basically, let me just explain very quickly a g1 is an all-in-one
[34:24.560 -> 34:25.520] I bring into my life. So basically, let me just explain very quickly. Ag1 is an all-in-one
[34:31.440 -> 34:35.120] Multivitamin, it has all of the nutrients. It has all of the goodness that I think my body needs in any given day I know there's loads of different supplements out there. Trust me. I've tried most of them
[34:35.120 -> 34:37.720] I ended up taking about nine or ten different tablets at one point
[34:37.760 -> 34:42.740] But what I love about ag1 is that it's over 70 high quality vitamins
[34:43.160 -> 34:45.400] probiotics whole food sourced ingredients,
[34:45.400 -> 34:48.760] and it's a kind of 10-second part of my daily routine
[34:48.760 -> 34:51.680] that makes a day-long difference to my life.
[34:51.680 -> 34:54.240] So I grab the powder, I put it in a shaker,
[34:54.240 -> 34:56.880] put a bit of water in, shake it, drink it,
[34:56.880 -> 34:57.700] and that's me done.
[34:57.700 -> 35:00.280] And I promise you, when I'm not taking AG1,
[35:00.280 -> 35:01.720] I notice the difference.
[35:01.720 -> 35:02.880] I'd love you to give it a go,

[36:13.280 -> 36:15.700] service in comparison to providers that we've worked

[37:10.740 -> 37:12.460] See Mint Mobile for details.
[37:12.460 -> 37:17.000] But there's a great lesson in that, isn't there?
[37:17.000 -> 37:21.760] That you were sort of dealt this large dose of humility because you made a mistake.
[37:21.760 -> 37:27.800] And we go through life trying to avoid making mistakes but the truth is that without that mistake the resulting learning
[37:27.800 -> 37:31.680] never happens and humility is a really interesting chapter in the book it is
[37:31.680 -> 37:36.720] one of the ten lessons. When I say humility what do you think of?
[37:36.720 -> 37:42.960] I merely think of making sure that you're constantly thankful for
[37:42.960 -> 39:49.280] everything that that's happening around you and the life that you live you know te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te teo, te, ātua, ātua, ātua, ātua, reo, o te reo te reo, o te reo te reo, o te reo Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei shining today, really grateful for the awesome business meeting that I was lucky enough to sit in, really simple things, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, you know, powerful tool that I've had to continue in this life after rugby. And journaling is something that you spoke to us on the last podcast around
[39:49.280 -> 39:55.320] how you're pretty diligent at it and there's a picture that we have
[39:55.320 -> 39:59.200] of the journal that you wrote before some of your biggest test
[39:59.200 -> 40:03.960] matches and what's particularly interesting to me in it was that you
[40:03.960 -> 40:05.280] almost acknowledge here some of the it was that you almost acknowledge here
[40:05.760 -> 40:12.360] Some of the negative emotions that you were going through as well. Like you speak about before that that epic
[40:12.960 -> 40:16.160] Lions test in 2005 how you were feeling nervous
[40:16.160 -> 40:23.040] You were feeling frightened and that almost flies in the face of this idea that we often assume high performers like yourself
[40:23.040 -> 40:29.200] I've got this constant positive thinking the idea that you don't allow negative thoughts in, and yet we see in your journal that's
[40:29.200 -> 40:34.960] precisely what you were doing. What did that do for you? There's no point sort of, you know,
[40:34.960 -> 40:39.760] hiding or blocking out the way that you're feeling. You almost need to embrace it, providing
[40:39.760 -> 40:46.000] you've done the work, the preparation. Nerves are good things in my opinion. It means you're I'm pretty nervous walking onto the stage tonight. But, so what I used to do, and this is an example of that,
[40:46.000 -> 40:49.000] is I used to plan my weeks on a Sunday night.
[40:49.000 -> 40:52.000] I talked about it the last time that we spoke.
[40:52.000 -> 40:57.000] I was really regimented with what I wanted to achieve every single day.
[40:57.000 -> 41:00.000] So I had real direction, real structure,
[41:00.000 -> 41:03.000] and I was really focused on what I wanted to achieve.
[41:03.000 -> 41:06.360] And I was really focused with what I wanted to achieve
[41:06.360 -> 41:07.720] every single day.
[41:07.720 -> 41:11.020] So I had real direction, real structure
[41:11.020 -> 41:12.920] to help me just go out there and play.
[41:12.920 -> 41:16.060] But the night before the game,
[41:16.060 -> 41:19.640] I would write notes like this one here,
[41:19.640 -> 41:22.960] where I'd write about how I'm feeling in that moment
[41:22.960 -> 41:27.000] and not to shy away from the emotions that I'm feeling.
[41:27.000 -> 41:35.000] And also the way I wanted to feel, just to remind myself to continue breathing, to smile, to have fun.
[41:35.000 -> 41:45.000] So really simple, clear messages that just would help kind of almost just put a full stop to my week of preparation.
[41:45.000 -> 42:29.000] So I knew right after that, I don't need to think. I just need to go out there and play and execute and play with freedom becauseau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau, te rau I sort of reminded myself that that was such an important part of what I used to do that I wanted to take into this next chapter of my life.
[42:29.000 -> 42:35.000] So, wipe the old dust off my old books. I was like, right, let's get back into it.
[42:35.000 -> 42:41.000] And it was very different because back then I was writing, you know, things like extra stretching sessions that I needed to do,
[42:41.000 -> 42:46.000] extra goal-kicking sessions that I'd do part of my weekly routine. So I write down my weekly routine.
[42:46.000 -> 42:48.000] I write down my daily routine.
[42:48.000 -> 42:50.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[42:50.000 -> 42:52.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[42:52.000 -> 42:54.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[42:54.000 -> 42:56.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[42:56.000 -> 42:58.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[42:58.000 -> 43:00.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[43:00.000 -> 43:02.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[43:02.000 -> 43:04.000] I write down my weekly routine.
[43:04.000 -> 43:26.680] I write down my weekly routine. I write down my weekly routine. Ngāti i mewna i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i mewno, i me you know, be, you know, actually just enjoy the week.
[43:26.680 -> 43:31.600] Something really simple, just a goal, and then I'd have three or four really key messages,
[43:31.600 -> 43:36.760] you know, making sure you're present at work and present at home, making sure that you,
[43:36.760 -> 43:39.400] you know, you be nice to people this week.
[43:39.400 -> 44:27.680] So when I'm writing, and then the lastau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, ati, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, really managed to fulfill what you wrote down in your book, or you've perhaps let yourself down or you've fallen short, because I think what we always have to be so careful is to
[44:27.680 -> 44:31.520] sit and have these conversations, and I think it's really powerful, but there will definitely
[44:31.520 -> 44:37.840] be people listening who almost feel inferior because they aren't, like, it almost sounds
[44:37.840 -> 44:38.840] perfect, right?
[44:38.840 -> 44:41.960] And I think that's a dangerous message to give out, because no one is.
[44:41.960 -> 45:15.000] I don't achieve what I write every single week. The weeks that I do, I feel that satisfaction is amazing. For example, the family and I got a bit crook, got the flu, I didn't write anything for three weeks. Was I hard on myself at the end of that? No. It's like, okay, you're not perfect, you don't deal with things, but I knew the importance of getting back into writing that consistency and it gave me sort of new motivation because sometimes in life, you know, you don't always have that motivation but that consistency, that discipline to stay with it.
[45:15.000 -> 45:24.000] And so at the end of the week, before I'm about to write the following week, I'll review the week. Why didn't you do what you said you'd do?
[45:24.000 -> 45:25.000] And how do you do what you said you'd do?
[45:25.000 -> 45:28.000] How do you do the review?
[45:28.000 -> 45:36.000] It's very general. Even if you're just kind of ticking across whether you were present at home. Yeah, there was a pass.
[45:36.000 -> 45:48.720] So, very simple. But you know whether you achieved it or not. And if I didn't, for no apparent reason, I'd be quite hard on myself. And I didn't have that satisfaction, but it gave me motivation. Right, well, why? That needs
[45:48.720 -> 45:53.280] to be a focus of this week. And then every now and then you'd review it and say, okay,
[45:53.280 -> 45:57.680] well, this happened, things that you couldn't control. You don't need to beat yourself up
[45:57.680 -> 46:02.720] in moments like that. But as long as you're seeing constant growth, your mindset of wanting
[46:02.720 -> 46:08.960] to be better than it was before, then as long as you're moving in the right direction, at what pace, it's irrelevant.
[46:08.960 -> 46:15.520] You don't need to have three months of doing everything that you've achieved to be successful,
[46:15.520 -> 46:22.280] but just that discipline of going through that process is something that I've really found beneficial for me
[46:22.280 -> 46:25.000] in this transitioning out of rugby.
[46:25.000 -> 46:29.000] There's a lovely phrase you use there about not beating yourself up.
[46:29.000 -> 46:34.000] There's a picture that you feature in the book that I want to share with you here.
[46:34.000 -> 46:38.000] I'm interested in you having a look at it and telling me what was going on for you
[46:38.000 -> 47:05.000] in the moment that this picture in particular captures. It's in 2011. [47:23.000 -> 47:24.000] Hei, koutou koutou.

[47:45.000 -> 47:49.000] I was at the peak, I was 29 years old, so I was at the peak of my career.
[47:49.000 -> 47:51.000] This is the one.
[47:51.000 -> 47:54.000] And I'd been vice-captain behind Richie McCaw for three years,
[47:54.000 -> 47:56.000] but I'd never captained the All Blacks.
[47:56.000 -> 47:59.000] So when I got the phone call from the coaches that morning saying,
[47:59.000 -> 48:02.000] you're captain, it was a really proud moment.
[48:02.000 -> 48:05.000] Straight on the phone to my father, he was so proud, you know kapitán, Hei kapitán, Hei kapitán, Hei kapitán,
[48:05.000 -> 48:06.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:06.000 -> 48:07.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:07.000 -> 48:08.000] Hei kapitán,

[48:18.000 -> 48:19.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:19.000 -> 48:20.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:20.000 -> 48:21.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:21.000 -> 48:22.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:22.000 -> 48:23.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:23.000 -> 48:24.000] Hei kapitán,
[48:24.000 -> 49:10.000] Hei kapitán, Hei kapitán, Hei kapitán, Hei kapitán, Hei kap hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai kiai I knew at that moment that my World Cup dream was over. And what I later found out is I tore my adductor muscle off my pubic bone,
[49:10.000 -> 49:15.000] and we ended up having to quickly race off the field because the media was about to arrive.
[49:15.000 -> 49:20.000] So they didn't want me lying on the ground, squirreling like a pig apparently.
[49:20.000 -> 49:45.000] That's what a certain coach, Mr Steve Hansen, described it as. Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, I don't want to, I'm not prepared to know the answer.
[49:45.000 -> 49:49.440] Jumped in the car, went back to the hotel, and then halfway on that journey, I asked
[49:49.440 -> 49:51.600] the doctor, is my World Cup over?
[49:51.600 -> 49:52.600] And she said yes.
[49:52.600 -> 50:01.240] And I burst into tears, went back to the hotel room, I was angry, I was sad, I was...
[50:01.240 -> 50:04.080] And I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason.
[50:04.080 -> 50:08.000] But in that moment, around this time, nothing made sense at all.
[50:08.000 -> 50:11.000] Why me? Why such a serious injury?
[50:11.000 -> 50:14.000] Why now, in the biggest tournament of my life?
[50:14.000 -> 50:18.000] A day out from the game where I was going to captain the All Blacks.
[50:18.000 -> 50:20.000] So it was a really challenging time.
[50:20.000 -> 50:23.000] My teammates would come in, they couldn't say a word because there's nothing they could say.
[50:23.000 -> 51:28.000] It was silence, but just their support was really appreciated. Mae'r teamate atea, nau eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei eitenei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, He setts new goals. So I re-signed a new contract with New Zealand Rugby Union for another four years to give myself another crack at one more World Cup.
[51:28.000 -> 51:32.000] And then actually the team first, one of the values of the All Blacks.
[51:32.000 -> 51:35.000] What does a team man do in this situation?
[51:35.000 -> 51:40.000] Well he gets his ass out of his hotel room and actually goes and helps the team.
[51:40.000 -> 51:43.000] So I did, I realised I had to just park my emotions.
[51:43.000 -> 51:46.000] And with your emotions you can either deal with it straight away,
[51:46.000 -> 51:51.000] which I did for 24 hours, but then I knew I needed to flick the switch and move on.
[51:51.000 -> 51:56.000] So it's important to grieve, but there needs to be a time that you move on,
[51:56.000 -> 51:59.000] because me sulking around the hotel for the next couple of weeks
[51:59.000 -> 52:01.000] is not going to help anyone.
[52:01.000 -> 52:04.000] So I always gave myself a 24-hour period to deal with my emotions.
[52:04.000 -> 52:08.240] That's why my wife knew after an injury, just to get me out of it. I'm not a very nice person to be around. So I went out and I helped the team. We went to our second string, number 10, he got injured.
[52:08.240 -> 52:10.000] Went to our third string, he got injured.
[52:10.000 -> 52:13.440] To the legendary beaver, Steve Donald,
[52:13.440 -> 52:16.600] fourth string, who was white baiting at the time,
[52:16.600 -> 52:18.400] got caught into the All Blacks, played a World Cup,
[52:18.400 -> 52:19.240] and then got injured.
[52:19.240 -> 52:20.560] So I was there for a couple of weeks,
[52:20.560 -> 52:21.880] and then I got back to the team.
[52:21.880 -> 52:23.040] And I was there for a couple of weeks,
[52:23.040 -> 52:23.880] and then I got back to the team.
[52:23.880 -> 52:24.720] And then I got back to the team.
[52:24.720 -> 52:32.000] And then I got back to the team. And then I got back to the team. And then I got back to the team. And then I got back to the team. And then I got back, the legendary beaver, Steve Donald, fourth string, who was whitebaiting at the time, got caught into the All Blacks, played a World Cup final, kicked the goal, incredible story.
[52:32.000 -> 52:45.000] But I felt like my duty was to help these guys, making sure I always put the team first. So there were some huge learnings for me.
[52:45.000 -> 52:47.000] So when I look at this picture now,
[52:47.000 -> 52:51.000] and the strength that that setback gave me,
[52:51.000 -> 52:53.000] the determination that that gave me
[52:53.000 -> 52:55.000] to push forward another four years
[52:55.000 -> 52:58.000] to help walk towards my purpose,
[52:58.000 -> 53:01.000] the strength that gave me to know
[53:01.000 -> 53:26.000] that I can have these failures, disappointments, setbacks, and know that I can bounce back. And 12 months after that photo, iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau iau Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou. Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou. Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:26.000 -> 53:28.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:28.000 -> 53:30.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:30.000 -> 53:32.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:32.000 -> 53:34.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:34.000 -> 53:36.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:36.000 -> 53:38.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:38.000 -> 53:40.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:40.000 -> 53:42.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:42.000 -> 53:44.000] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou.
[53:44.000 -> 53:45.800] Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou. Ngāti kākou, koutou, koutou. Ia one of the things that happened four years later in 2015, to be involved in a Rugby World Cup final,
[53:45.800 -> 53:50.160] help the team make history by being the first team
[53:50.160 -> 53:52.280] to win back-to-back World Cups,
[53:52.280 -> 53:54.480] be the first all-black side to win a World Cup
[53:54.480 -> 53:56.860] outside of New Zealand.
[53:58.280 -> 54:01.000] A lot of that was off the learnings that I got
[54:01.000 -> 54:02.440] from that injury there.
[54:02.440 -> 54:28.280] So all of a sudden, what I believed, things do happen for a reason, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, It's been really interesting to sort of pick up on little moments throughout your career. And I think the great reminder for people in this room is that people often see someone
[54:28.280 -> 54:32.240] like you and go, you know, you've taken all of these perfect moments in your life and
[54:32.240 -> 54:35.900] you've managed to turn it into being this great dad, great husband and someone that's
[54:35.900 -> 54:39.200] found a career after rugby. But actually, you know, we've sat and spoken for the last
[54:39.200 -> 54:44.240] 50 minutes or so. And actually, the biggest learnings came in the hard times, the biggest
[54:44.240 -> 54:46.240] growth came after the setback. And it's all about the came in the hard times. The biggest growth came after the setback.
[54:46.240 -> 54:48.280] And it's all about the comeback after the setback.
[54:48.280 -> 54:51.280] And I just think that I'd love to finish this conversation
[54:51.280 -> 54:55.200] by just seeing where you are at now in your own head
[54:55.200 -> 54:58.560] as a dad and as a husband and as a friend.
[54:58.560 -> 55:00.600] And just to kind of wrap up
[55:01.720 -> 55:03.560] just how different life feels for you now.
[55:03.560 -> 55:25.000] You no longer have the rigid life of an all-black, but in so many ways, your life is probably richer now Te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te reo te reo, te I'm never going to be able to match what I achieved in the sporting field.
[55:25.000 -> 55:29.000] And the more you understand that the life is different now.
[55:29.000 -> 55:33.000] There are new challenges, there are new ways to grow.
[55:33.000 -> 55:38.000] And I had some incredible conversations with a friend of mine called Tim Brown.
[55:38.000 -> 55:44.000] So he was a professional footballer and then he transitioned out of sport.
[55:44.000 -> 55:49.000] He was a captain of the All Whites, the New Zealand soccer team.
[55:50.000 -> 56:03.000] And then he went on to be a really successful businessman. He founded a shoe company called Allbirds, valued at ridiculous amounts of money, listed on the American Stock Exchange. He had real success.
[56:02.080 -> 56:03.120] He listed on the American Stock Exchange. He had real success.
[56:03.120 -> 56:05.880] And what he did, he taught me a really good lesson.
[56:05.880 -> 56:07.960] And he said, look, in life,
[56:07.960 -> 56:11.560] you're probably gonna have maybe three peaks.
[56:11.560 -> 56:15.880] And your sporting career, that's one peak.
[56:15.880 -> 56:18.560] And what you achieved there is incredible.
[56:18.560 -> 56:21.000] Now, far too many people, when they finish,
[56:21.000 -> 56:24.880] they expect to go into business or their next life
[56:24.880 -> 56:26.000] at that same level. They're not humble enough to actually go backwards mai ii tehau i mea o te reo mea, ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea, ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:26.000 -> 56:28.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:28.000 -> 56:30.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:30.000 -> 56:32.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:32.000 -> 56:34.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:34.000 -> 56:36.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:36.000 -> 56:38.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:38.000 -> 56:40.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:40.000 -> 56:42.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:42.000 -> 56:44.000] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea,
[56:44.000 -> 57:07.600] ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea, ii te kaiti i mea o te reo mea, I feel like I was at the start of my rugby career, but I've got this wealth of knowledge and experience from my first peak, that I'm kind of going backwards. I'm learning new skills, learning a lot about sort of me as a person, learning all sorts of new things around sort of businesses and startups that I've been involved in, that next peak, it's gonna far exceed the peak of being a rugby player
[57:07.600 -> 57:10.640] because I've got all this knowledge in behind me.
[57:10.640 -> 57:13.800] It's this new type of education that I've learned
[57:13.800 -> 57:15.960] from playing sport to close to 20 years.
[57:15.960 -> 57:17.840] So I'm really excited about this next chapter in my life
[57:17.840 -> 57:19.120] and through this transition,
[57:19.120 -> 57:20.840] just having that flexibility to be there
[57:20.840 -> 57:23.760] for my family's been important.
[57:23.760 -> 57:27.000] I'm one of these people that when I commit to something, I'm all in. And that's how I was with my all-black career.
[57:27.000 -> 57:36.000] It's even hard me saying this, that at times I actually had to put my family second to the journey and things that I wanted to achieve.
[57:36.000 -> 58:26.780] And now that I'm able to do school drop-offs, I'm coaching my second son Fox's rugby team and just seeing their development and their growth. Naua ki te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o te reo, te reo o tengo, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ango, ang And my son's like, he's retired from rugby and now we watch him on YouTube all his highlights. So he's a youtuber
[58:26.780 -> 58:30.580] So all of a sudden I'm a really cool dad because they think I'm a youtuber now that I'm not playing
[58:30.860 -> 58:32.860] Because they can see me on YouTube. So
[58:33.140 -> 58:36.120] That amazing career and you've been reduced to an influencer
[58:37.460 -> 58:41.120] That's what happens. Listen, that's been such an interesting conversation
[58:41.700 -> 58:45.960] Thank you so much for opening up for sharing so much with us for writing the book that you've written
[58:45.960 -> 58:47.660] I'm so pleased that you know
[58:47.660 -> 58:52.040] We were able to fill this theater this evening that people were able just to spend an hour in your company to
[58:52.380 -> 58:57.840] Read the book is one thing but to hear you talk about it in such an authentic and honest and humble way
[58:58.120 -> 59:00.040] And let me just be totally clear
[59:00.040 -> 59:00.540] Okay
[59:00.540 -> 59:05.080] sometimes you do these things and you sit on stage and someone tells you all of these lovely things and you think well
[59:05.080 -> 59:08.780] I don't believe what you say because I see what you do. I saw your behavior backstage
[59:09.420 -> 59:13.260] Backstage with you the conversations we've had before today how you've been with the team
[59:13.320 -> 59:18.240] You are absolutely everything that you say you are and that's actually a rare quality
[59:18.240 -> 59:25.520] So on behalf of everyone in the theater and everyone high performance, thank Thank you so much Dan Carter. Thank you.
[59:25.520 -> 59:27.520] Thank you.
[59:27.520 -> 59:29.520] APPLAUSE
[59:41.520 -> 59:47.320] Damien. Jake. It was a real pleasure to be in the Hackney Empire that evening
[59:47.320 -> 59:50.760] speaking to Dan Carter. You know it's one thing sitting and having a one-to-one
[59:50.760 -> 59:53.560] conversation like this, it's something very different in a big theatre and
[59:53.560 -> 59:57.240] I'll be honest I was really worried that you know maybe Dan wouldn't be free to
[59:57.240 -> 01:00:00.440] be himself or talk in a really honest way or that he might sort of play up to
[01:00:00.440 -> 01:00:09.720] the crowd if you like. But I almost think that we saw more from him because of the crowd in there and he's a man who spent his whole life having to
[01:00:09.720 -> 01:00:13.120] deliver his best performances in front of an audience and I think he did that.
[01:00:13.120 -> 01:00:17.040] Yeah that's a really good point. There was a moment during the interview where
[01:00:17.040 -> 01:00:22.760] I sort of allowed myself to tune out and instead tune in to what was
[01:00:22.760 -> 01:00:25.520] happening around us you know. It's an immense privilege to have been sat in a i'r cyfansoddau sy'n digwydd o'n gilydd. Mae'n brif ffyrddol iawn
[01:00:25.520 -> 01:00:27.000] fod wedi bod yn y staff
[01:00:27.000 -> 01:00:28.200] gyda milo o bobl eraill
[01:00:28.200 -> 01:00:29.480] yn mynd i'r sgwrs
[01:00:29.480 -> 01:00:31.000] o'r ddiddordeb ddiddorol
[01:00:31.000 -> 01:00:32.000] fel Dan,
[01:00:32.000 -> 01:00:34.000] a ddweud yn agored a'n ddiddordeb.
[01:00:34.000 -> 01:00:36.000] Felly roedd hwn yn un o'r cyfnod o ddiddordeb
[01:00:36.000 -> 01:00:38.000] ar gyfer fy hun.
[01:00:38.000 -> 01:00:39.000] Ac rwy'n credu
[01:00:39.000 -> 01:00:41.000] bod hynny'n un o'r pethau
[01:00:41.000 -> 01:00:42.000] rydw i'n dysgu,
[01:00:42.000 -> 01:00:43.000] yn eithaf,
[01:00:43.000 -> 01:00:44.000] yn y ffyrdd,
[01:00:44.000 -> 01:00:45.800] gan Dan, a weithiau, yw bod yn y moment. Doedd gennych ddim yn meddwl am y cwestiwn nesaf I was learning almost by osmosis from Dan and sometimes just be in the
[01:00:45.800 -> 01:00:49.920] moment, don't be thinking about the next question or thinking about what's just
[01:00:49.920 -> 01:00:55.000] been said, just to allow yourself to be in the moment is a really powerful, a
[01:00:55.000 -> 01:00:59.160] really powerful lesson and I think that was the one thing I'd encourage anyone
[01:00:59.160 -> 01:01:02.840] to take away from this is be where you are, not where you wish you were or where
[01:01:02.840 -> 01:01:08.040] you've been previously, just be in the moment you're in. And I love the idea that you know
[01:01:08.040 -> 01:01:11.000] high performance isn't a period in your life, high performance is something that
[01:01:11.000 -> 01:01:14.200] stays with you throughout, so he might not be a professional rugby player
[01:01:14.200 -> 01:01:17.960] anymore, but he's still living his life in a high performance way, I mean the
[01:01:17.960 -> 01:01:21.640] fact that he wanted to, you know, the way he spoke to the team before we did the
[01:01:21.640 -> 01:01:24.600] event, he wanted to know how's it gonna run, where's it gonna be, what are the
[01:01:24.600 -> 01:01:26.100] questions like, what's the venue like,
[01:01:26.100 -> 01:01:30.180] how many people, what's the layout on the stage, right, he arrives early, he says
[01:01:30.180 -> 01:01:33.740] hello to everybody, he eats a really healthy lunch, he then makes sure he comes
[01:01:33.740 -> 01:01:36.900] and does a full rehearsal, he then hung around backstage afterwards, which he
[01:01:36.900 -> 01:01:40.380] didn't need to do by the way, to speak to all of the people who wanted to meet him,
[01:01:40.380 -> 01:01:43.780] he then came upstairs for a beer and he spoke a bit further, he signed some rugby
[01:01:43.780 -> 01:01:48.080] shirts for a local rugby club, like the entire process of working with him, came upstairs for a beer and he spoke a bit further and he signed some rugby shirts for a local rugby club. Like the entire process of
[01:01:48.080 -> 01:01:52.480] working with him was high performance and Dan from the minute we met him till
[01:01:52.480 -> 01:01:55.480] the minute he said goodbye and got in his cab and headed back off into central
[01:01:55.480 -> 01:01:57.400] London was the epitome of high performance.
[01:01:57.400 -> 01:02:02.800] Yeah I think that's a really nice light to shine on him because I think people
[01:02:02.800 -> 01:02:08.320] could listen to the interview but we had the, we were lucky enough to spend the Iawn i'w ddewis, oherwydd rwy'n credu y gall pobl ysgrifennu at y cyfraith, ond roeddem yn ddigon llwyr i ddod â'i gilydd hefyd yn ôl-staff,
[01:02:08.320 -> 01:02:12.480] ac rydw i'n gweld y gwerthfawr, pan ddechreuon ni a rhedeg ychydig o beriau,
[01:02:12.480 -> 01:02:17.840] ac roedd e'n dweud rhai storïau o ran ei gyrfa ei hun,
[01:02:17.840 -> 01:02:22.000] a'i gyrfa ei hun, a sut mae'n ddod i'r gwrth.
[01:02:22.000 -> 01:02:26.880] Rwy'n credu y byddai pobl wedi gweld un man arbennig gyda ddifrifol talent, and how he's just so down to earth. I think what people have seen is an ordinary man with an extraordinary talent
[01:02:26.880 -> 01:02:30.500] and I think that is high performance in its own right.
[01:02:30.500 -> 01:02:32.000] Love it, thanks mate.
[01:02:32.000 -> 01:02:34.000] Thank you mate.

[01:02:48.300 -> 01:02:52.520] is out now. And trust me, it's well worth a read. But once we'd finished the conversation
[01:02:52.520 -> 01:02:56.700] with Dan, we had a Q&A with the audience. It was great fun, actually. We had these microphones
[01:02:56.700 -> 01:03:00.320] shaped as rugby balls. Dan was throwing them around inside the theatre. People were asking
[01:03:00.320 -> 01:03:01.320] questions.

[01:03:40.120 -> 01:03:43.500] we also had some special guests asking Dan a question,
[01:03:43.500 -> 01:03:46.000] including this one from his dad.
[01:03:46.000 -> 01:03:53.000] Yes Dan, why did you leave it to the last test as an international player playing for the All Blacks
[01:03:53.000 -> 01:04:01.000] to show us that you could kick with your right foot after all the practice we did at home during those young ages
[01:04:01.000 -> 01:04:04.000] to make sure that you could kick with both feet.
[01:04:04.000 -> 01:04:08.080] I dare say you've got a special reason why you left it to that really, really last kick,
[01:04:08.080 -> 01:04:12.000] but I knew it was coming, so it was a pretty proud moment.
[01:04:12.000 -> 01:04:16.880] And that Q&A is available right now on the High Performance app.
[01:04:16.880 -> 01:04:20.240] If you would love to enjoy that exclusive content, then all you need to do
