Notes

This week’s episode provides a rare glimpse into the mind of a coaching legend Steve Hansen, revealing the key to success in the world of rugby and beyond.

Steve is a New Zealand rugby union coach and a former player. He famously led the All Blacks to victory during the 2015 Rugby World Cup as their head coach, a role he held from 2012 to 2019. This is a reflective, honest and vulnerable conversation with one of the world’s best coaches. Steve offers insights into his time with the All-Blacks, sharing his experiences coaching the greatest rugby team in history, and the task of redefining the concept of progress while sitting at the top of the world rankings.

Jake, Damian and Steve delve into the strategic mindset he brings to coaching, sharing five thought-provoking questions he constantly asks himself and his team:

What’s our identity and our legacy?

How fast can we learn about what’s going on in the game?

What are the places we’re struggling?

How fast can we adapt when things aren’t going our way?

What is our biggest goal?

They discuss his competitive and pride-driver alter-ego, Stanley, and how he has learnt to control this side of himself, offering valuable insights into the complexities of leadership. By prioritising simplicity, trust, and self-awareness, Steve explores how we can create a blueprint for high performance in any endeavour.

This episode was recorded at the Rugby Premiership Final at Twickenham, there may be some crowd noise in the background.

[01:45.440 -> 01:50.540] to have another go and we took the learnings and you know Bob's your uncle
[01:50.540 -> 01:53.480] got the job done.
[01:53.880 -> 01:57.640] You know there's one thing we love here on High Performance and that's showing
[01:57.640 -> 02:01.560] you a side to elite sports people whether that's the athletes, the coaches,
[02:01.560 -> 02:05.800] the executives or the leaders that you just don't see
[02:05.800 -> 02:08.320] or hear anywhere else.
[02:08.320 -> 02:10.240] And today is special.
[02:10.240 -> 02:12.760] Recorded ahead of a game at Twickenham Stadium,
[02:12.760 -> 02:14.020] the home of England rugby,
[02:14.020 -> 02:17.240] we were joined by the legendary All Blacks coach,
[02:17.240 -> 02:18.680] Steve Hansen.
[02:18.680 -> 02:21.580] He's the first ever coach to lead the All Blacks
[02:21.580 -> 02:24.920] to a successful defence of the Rugby World Cup.
[02:24.920 -> 02:26.440] But this conversation actually,
[02:26.440 -> 02:28.660] is about so much more than rugby.
[02:28.660 -> 02:29.840] It's about life.
[02:29.840 -> 02:32.000] He is one of rugby's greatest leaders.
[02:32.000 -> 02:35.520] He has led the most famous team in the sport of rugby.
[02:35.520 -> 02:37.320] But Steve rarely gives interviews like this.
[02:37.320 -> 02:39.880] He rarely opens up in this kind of way.
[02:39.880 -> 02:42.480] This interview is honest, it's emotional,
[02:42.480 -> 02:45.440] it's entertaining, and it's enlightening.
[02:45.440 -> 02:51.340] So on the eve of the Rugby World Cup, let's hear from a coach who has won it, as we welcome
[02:51.340 -> 02:55.000] Steve Hansen to High Performance.
[02:55.000 -> 03:01.420] Ryan Reynolds here from InMobile.
[03:01.420 -> 03:05.160] With the price of just about everything going up during inflation, we thought we'd bring
[03:05.160 -> 03:06.880] our prices down.
[03:06.880 -> 03:11.120] So to help us, we brought in a reverse auctioneer, which is apparently a thing.
[03:11.120 -> 03:12.880] Mint Mobile Unlimited Premium Wireless.
[03:12.880 -> 03:16.480] How do they get 30, 30, they get 30, they get 20, 20, 20, they get 20, 20, they get
[03:16.480 -> 03:19.360] 15, 15, 15, 15, just 15 bucks a month?

[09:38.000 -> 09:44.000] How do you make all of that simple? Because the people that listen to this podcast are constantly looking for ways in their own lives to do that.

We're all in it together. So we disagree and commit to it.
[11:25.000 -> 11:32.000] That's been the philosophy for a long time. And then living it from the top down, I think, is really, really important.
[11:32.000 -> 11:37.000] So what were the non-negotiable expectations that you did set then?
[11:37.000 -> 11:41.000] The first one was team first and individual second.
[11:41.000 -> 11:52.000] I've always felt that I wanted to care about my athletes, but I didn't want that care and love and support to get in the way of making tough decisions.
[11:52.000 -> 11:59.000] So if I made the team more important than the individual, then the team would demand that I'd make those tough decisions.
[11:59.000 -> 12:12.000] And if we could educate our athletes and our management to understand that as well, then we'd all make the right decisions in the moment that we needed to make them, because it was more important for the team than it was for myself.
[12:12.000 -> 12:25.000] Now we didn't get that right all the time, you know, those guys, they're young men and they make mistakes, but we got it right a lot of the time, so that was non-negotiable. Having alignment was non-negotiable.
[12:25.000 -> 12:29.000] So we couldn't do it if we didn't agree that we had to be aligned.
[12:29.000 -> 12:34.000] And then the third one was that the players would drive that alignment.
[12:34.000 -> 12:37.000] They would lead it both on and off the field.
[12:37.000 -> 12:42.000] I wanted them to drive the bus as opposed to me being the driver.
[12:42.000 -> 12:45.080] I love what you said there about caring about players
[12:45.080 -> 12:49.040] because I think often people assume elite sport
[12:49.040 -> 12:51.120] is quite a brutal, harsh environment
[12:51.120 -> 12:54.000] and yet to hear somebody as successful as yourself
[12:54.000 -> 12:57.120] talk about caring and wanting to get along with players
[12:57.120 -> 12:58.440] is important.
[12:58.440 -> 13:00.780] Would you explain for those outside of that world then
[13:00.780 -> 13:03.040] that maybe would be surprised at hearing that,
[13:03.040 -> 13:26.000] why it is so important? Well, it's a tough job, as you've just said, oes oes oesio'i i'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynllunio'r gynll Anoangata, when I started coaching, I was a reasonably simple person.
[13:26.000 -> 13:33.000] I'd always use the philosophy of my own career and things that happened to me, the good and the bad.
[13:33.000 -> 13:36.000] The bad things I didn't want to happen to other people.
[13:36.000 -> 13:41.000] Like people not being brave enough to tell you the truth about selections.

But your job actually at the end of the day is to win games of rugby and win trophies.
[14:27.280 -> 14:32.960] So can you give us an example of when you knew that caring for individuals
[14:32.960 -> 14:37.120] actually translated to performances on the rugby pitch?
[14:37.120 -> 14:41.840] Oh, there was no light bulb moment that said it. I just knew that that's how I wanted to coach.
[14:41.840 -> 15:05.000] And when I did it, I knew I had an athlete who would give me more. [15:05.000 -> 15:10.000] Can we talk about alignment as well, because that's something that's come up in the conversation three or four times already.
[15:10.000 -> 15:15.000] I think we all learn more when things aren't going right than when they're going well.
[15:15.000 -> 15:21.000] Could you give us an example of a period in your coaching career when the alignment has not been right?
[15:21.000 -> 16:25.400] There's two times probably. The third one was, what are the inconvenient facts that we're prepared to admit to ourselves out loud, as opposed to paper over the cracks?
[17:11.000 -> 17:17.000] The fourth one was, how fast can we adapt and adjust in games when things aren't going the way we want them to?
[17:17.000 -> 17:23.000] And the last one was, okay, what's the big audacious goal that we're going to try and achieve?
[17:23.000 -> 17:28.000] So we sat down and tried to identify what they were.
[17:28.000 -> 17:30.000] And it was interesting because when we went to the identity,
[17:30.000 -> 17:32.000] and it was a word that we'd used a lot,
[17:32.000 -> 17:35.000] you know, our legacy, etc., etc.,
[17:35.000 -> 17:37.000] and I asked in a leaders' meeting,
[17:37.000 -> 17:40.000] I think there was 12 players and a bit four management,
[17:40.000 -> 17:44.000] and we couldn't answer it as distinctly as we wanted to.
[17:44.000 -> 18:08.000] So I said, right, oh, well, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, at making them cherish the All Blacks. We came up with a series of things and then we put players,
[18:08.000 -> 18:13.000] attached players into those different areas from the past.
[18:13.000 -> 18:18.000] That's what we're representing, that's what we have to deliver on every day.
[18:18.000 -> 18:22.000] We went to the inconvenient facts and admitted to ourselves,
[18:22.000 -> 18:48.000] well, let's look at the teams we're playing, what are they as good as us? They'll be better at some things than us. Iawhiai i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i'reo, i So those are things you do every day and that allows you to not just concentrate on what you've just done.
[18:48.000 -> 18:50.000] So it's bigger than that.
[18:50.000 -> 18:59.000] And then your big audacious goal like ours was when I first got the job, we'd just won the World Cup in 2011.
[18:59.000 -> 20:05.000] I had to go to this interview and I'm thinking, well, what am I going to say to them? Atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei,'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i'r tīmau, i'i gaui i at moving people's asses from being comfortable in the back of the chair to the front of it.
[20:05.000 -> 20:09.000] And I don't even know if some people thought we could achieve it.
[20:09.000 -> 20:12.000] And I don't know if we did or we didn't achieve it. It doesn't matter.
[20:12.000 -> 20:19.000] What mattered was we had a whole group of people collectively owning that idea, trying to achieve it.
[20:19.000 -> 20:23.000] And as I said to the group, it doesn't matter whether we achieve it or not, guys.
[20:23.000 -> 20:28.000] It's what the public, it's the story we leave behind. They'll tell us if we've achieved it or not.
[20:28.000 -> 20:35.000] You're only going to achieve it to have to do it again. So it's never ending.
[20:35.000 -> 20:47.000] Then we would set immediate goals for up and coming competitions and then mid-term goals. So, as an example, when we came here in 2015, the World Cup,
[20:47.000 -> 20:54.000] one of the goals we wanted to do was become the second most supported team behind England for the English fans.
[20:54.000 -> 20:59.000] Because if they got knocked out, who were England going to fan support?
[20:59.000 -> 21:01.000] And we thought, well, why can't they support us?
[21:01.000 -> 21:45.000] It would be nice to come to Twickenham for a change and have them shouting for us. So everything we did off the field had that in mind. [24:44.000 -> 25:05.000] So what were those learnings? All about pressure. We have to admit to ourselves that there is a lot of pressure. [27:14.480 -> 27:15.640] And then we had Australia,
[27:15.640 -> 27:18.120] it was probably the hardest game of South Africa.
[27:19.160 -> 27:22.320] 19, we'd had a few problems with Ireland.
[27:22.320 -> 27:45.000] They'd beaten us, I think, just before the World Cup, and we came out and smashed them. [29:52.000 -> 30:00.000] So even if as a coach you're having some slight concerns, is it ever a bad thing to say to the guys, look, this is the situation we're in?
[30:00.000 -> 30:49.000] No, it's not a bad thing. Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, her, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er, er so we can fix it? [30:49.000 -> 30:53.000] And I've heard you speak about you have an alter ego.
[30:53.000 -> 30:58.000] Sometimes it comes out, I can't remember the name you gave your alter ego when you get hyper competitive.
[30:58.000 -> 30:59.000] Oh Stanley.
[30:59.000 -> 31:00.000] Stanley.
[31:00.000 -> 31:32.000] I didn't give it, my wife and a couple of friends gave me that. Nau, nau, nau, nau, nau, nau, world because it doesn't allow you to admit your mistakes, it doesn't allow you to lose.
[31:32.000 -> 31:34.000] And it's just another word for ego really.
[31:34.000 -> 31:40.000] So your ego, we all have an ego and we just got to master it.
[31:40.000 -> 32:05.000] And when your pride becomes a problem, you don't master it, so it gets in the way I guess. Anoa oehio,

[33:53.000 -> 33:59.000] I've told you this so many times over the last year or so that I thought I would invite someone onto my podcast,
[33:59.000 -> 34:06.200] making their high performance debut to tell you what she thinks of AG1 because we take it together.
[34:06.200 -> 34:07.760] It's my wife Harriet. Hey Harriet.
[34:07.760 -> 34:08.760] Harriet – Hello.
[34:08.760 -> 34:12.160] Toby – So this is totally unnatural for her but she promised me that she would give
[34:12.160 -> 34:15.680] it a go because she loves it as well. So what do you think of AG1?
[34:15.680 -> 34:20.160] Harriet – I personally love it. I'm a mum of two small children and with you being
[34:20.160 -> 34:25.880] away a lot, I honestly think AG1 has been so good for me. It's the first
[34:25.880 -> 34:29.140] thing I have when I wake up in the morning, it's my go-to drink and it's
[34:29.140 -> 34:32.800] just a great habit that I've formed and although it's just a small change in my
[34:32.800 -> 34:38.800] day, I've seen such a huge impact on my energy levels, my sleep and I think in
[34:38.800 -> 34:43.440] the past year I can't think of any times when I've been really poorly in bed. I've
[34:43.440 -> 34:45.680] just been so healthy
[34:45.680 -> 34:47.980] since starting taking it so I'd highly recommend it.
[34:47.980 -> 34:52.920] There you go if you don't listen to me maybe listen to my wife and if you're
[34:52.920 -> 34:56.160] interested in getting involved in AG1 if you want to take ownership of your

[36:49.660 -> 36:51.580] See Mint Mobile for details.
[36:54.940 -> 36:57.620] The reason why that's interesting is cause obviously,
[36:57.620 -> 37:00.020] you know, you create these really fascinating
[37:00.020 -> 37:02.700] and winning cultures with your rugby teams,
[37:02.700 -> 37:09.220] but where you can't control is outside factors. So you know you've spoken about your players coping with external
[37:09.220 -> 37:14.760] perception. I wonder how you coped with external criticism. I'm thinking mainly
[37:14.760 -> 37:17.680] from the media and you know a lot of people listening to this won't be in the
[37:17.680 -> 37:21.880] position you're in, but they will feel judged and challenged by other people.
[37:21.880 -> 37:23.400] What advice would you offer them?
[37:23.400 -> 38:05.000] Yeah look I think none of us like to be judged in a negative way. a tēnā koe i tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei tēnei, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, koutou koutou. Are we going in at 95 here or are we going in totally committed?
[39:45.880 -> 39:47.640] That's part of high performance, isn't it?
[39:47.640 -> 39:50.080] If you get comfortable, you're going to get punished.
[39:50.080 -> 39:53.920] So what would you say you did judge your coaching success by?
[39:53.920 -> 39:55.920] Because like you say, you've had the most losses
[39:55.920 -> 39:57.400] and the most wins.
[39:57.400 -> 40:01.360] So if I can just give you an example of when a coach gave us
[40:01.360 -> 40:04.040] a really fascinating answer to this was when we sat down
[40:04.040 -> 40:06.080] with Rob Baxter at Agility Chiefs
[40:06.080 -> 40:08.920] and he said it took him 10 years into his coaching
[40:08.920 -> 40:11.360] to realise the most important question was,
[40:11.360 -> 40:13.880] would I be happy for my son to be coached by me?
[40:14.920 -> 40:17.320] What would you say your criteria was?
[40:17.320 -> 40:21.200] I've always had the same criteria
[40:21.200 -> 40:24.680] from the day I started to the day I finished coaching.
[40:24.680 -> 40:50.000] And it's the greatest pleasure I get Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei I get a real buzz out of that. I get a buzz out of teams, individuals within teams being able to achieve what they're trying to do.
[40:50.000 -> 40:59.000] And you can do that at any level of catching. I was never ever worried about getting sacked because I knew that's where I get my buzz from.
[40:59.000 -> 41:08.000] So I'll just go back down to the local club and do it down there. Brilliant. And how much freedom in your set-up is there for you?
[41:08.000 -> 41:10.000] Are you a control freak?
[41:10.000 -> 41:13.000] Do you want to know everything that's happening at all times?
[41:13.000 -> 41:16.000] I would say that I'm an empowerer,
[41:16.000 -> 41:20.000] but when I first started I was probably a control freak.
[41:20.000 -> 41:23.000] Because I think we all are, because we think that's what we have to be.
[41:23.000 -> 41:25.000] And we're not trusting enough in our own abilities to not want to know. kia kai mātoua i kia koutou. Hei, koutou.

[42:32.000 -> 42:35.000] and we're having trouble with Dan Carter in 215.
[42:35.000 -> 42:39.000] He'd been pulling calf muscles for a couple of years,
[42:39.000 -> 42:44.000] and one day, because I've got an interest in horses,
[42:44.000 -> 43:06.840] and I understand a long time ago an old trainer said to me, Unei, kiau kiau, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, unai, un He was a mess biomechanically. I thought, what if we took some weight off?
[43:07.560 -> 43:09.280] He wasn't fat.
[43:09.880 -> 43:13.680] So I asked him, what weight were you when you weren't pulling your calf muscles?
[43:13.680 -> 43:16.320] He said, I'm 93 maybe.
[43:16.320 -> 43:18.320] I said, what are you now? 95.
[43:18.720 -> 43:23.960] He's doing the jockey ads at 95, so it's muscle, it's not fat.
[43:24.600 -> 43:34.000] So I went to Gillian, we talked about it, and I said, why don't we take a couple of kilo off and see if, you know, because we both agreed biomechanically it wasn't great, would that help?
[43:34.000 -> 43:47.000] Well we did, and he never pulled another calf muscle. Helekaupatau er mau i mewnoho, ond hefyd i gaudhau tawirau ar gyfer rai er mau

[43:53.000 -> 43:56.000] Oherwydd y peth gwych yw eich bod eich stupefao
[43:56.000 -> 43:57.000] a'ch gynnyrchu eich bobl.
[43:57.000 -> 43:58.000] A yw ruleau'n bwysig,
[43:58.000 -> 44:00.000] felly maent i gyd gwybod yr eangau
[44:00.000 -> 44:02.000] ro'r parametreau y gynnyrchu neu ddim?
[44:02.000 -> 44:04.000] Dwi ddim teimio ruleau.
[44:04.000 -> 44:05.580] Dwi ddim teimio ruleau. Dwi ddim teimio arwainau, ond dwi ddim teimio ruleau exactly the parameters they work into or not? I hate rules. Do you? I hate rules.
[44:05.580 -> 44:08.240] Expectations, I like, but I don't like rules
[44:08.240 -> 44:11.120] because they stop people from sometimes
[44:11.120 -> 44:12.200] going where they should.
[44:12.200 -> 44:15.040] And I often say rules are there to guide the brave
[44:15.040 -> 44:16.540] and inhibit the foolish.
[44:18.440 -> 44:21.000] And when I'm working in Japan at the moment,
[44:21.000 -> 44:25.000] and it's a society that's got a lot of rules.
[44:25.000 -> 44:27.000] And it does inhibit them.
[44:27.000 -> 44:31.000] We're making some progress and getting some change there,
[44:31.000 -> 44:34.000] but it's like pulling teeth out of a chicken.
[44:34.000 -> 44:38.000] What in particular in Japan have you challenged?
[44:38.000 -> 45:06.280] Well, you give me a glass, you're ranked higher than me in, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi, iawhi,ou tātou, i tātou tātou,

I don't want to make a rule that's going to make you have to do that.
[46:47.000 -> 46:52.000] What I love about that as well is that allows people to fall occasionally
[46:52.000 -> 46:56.000] without being punished or ostracised or demonised for it.
[46:56.000 -> 46:57.000] We all fall.
[46:57.000 -> 47:45.600] I see players and all human beings from time to time who want to be perfect. [47:45.600 -> 47:48.800] but they're just not getting it, they're just not right.
[47:48.800 -> 47:50.800] How would you advise people to deal with that?
[47:50.800 -> 47:56.000] Well, again, I think there's an old, old saying that we use,
[47:56.000 -> 47:58.800] if you can't change the man, change the man.
[47:58.800 -> 48:02.600] At some point, if they're not going to come with you,
[48:02.600 -> 48:26.000] then that's not the place for you to be. What did you employ to try and get people to come with you? Iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawhia, iawh I'll give you an example. Alfie Thomas. Probably the second best athlete I've ever coached.
[48:26.000 -> 48:30.000] Superb athlete. Behind Sonny Bill and he'd be next.
[48:31.000 -> 48:36.000] When I first came to Wales, he wasn't a leader, but he was seen to be a leader by his peers.
[48:36.000 -> 48:42.000] I always find it ironic when people name captains or you're a leader.
[48:43.000 -> 48:45.920] You know who the leaders are when the shit hits the fan and everyone goes, Mae hiriau o kapitiai, o iwi i kapitiai, i kia kia kapitiai. Pai i kia kapitiai, i kia kapitiai.
[48:45.920 -> 48:48.080] I kia kapitiai, i kia kapitiai.
[48:48.080 -> 49:47.000] I kia kapitiai, i kia kapitiai. I kia kapitiai, i kia kapitiai. I kia kapitiai, i kia kapwa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, ewa toki, e Ond mātuai mātuai, kia kia kia kia, kia kia kia, k to the same horse trainer that taught me about the legs.
[49:47.000 -> 49:51.000] I'd once said to him, oh, that horse looks really fit, you'd better put him back into training,
[49:51.000 -> 49:53.000] because we used to graze him on the farm.
[49:53.000 -> 49:56.000] And he said, you give me a yell, and he said, oh, why's that?
[49:56.000 -> 49:58.000] And I said, oh, because he's bucking.
[49:58.000 -> 50:00.000] I've seen him bucking today, he looks real fresh.
[50:00.000 -> 50:04.000] He said, well, you give me a ring when he's bucking every day, and I'll bring him back into work.
[50:04.000 -> 50:26.000] So I put the phone down and thought, right, oh, if he's really serious, he's changed, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea, atau mea He seems to be on a different plane. So we brought him in and sat there and we had a great conversation.
[50:26.000 -> 50:30.440] And I said, righto, mate, I'll judge you from this day forth
[50:30.440 -> 50:32.440] on the things that we've just talked about
[50:32.440 -> 50:34.480] that we need from you.
[50:34.480 -> 50:37.120] And he went on to be one of the greats
[50:37.120 -> 50:40.440] and captain of the Lions.
[50:41.720 -> 51:07.080] And that was satisfying when you see him being successful because we tried to change him. Atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, atau, at give him another go. Love it. He's serious, bang, we've got a great athlete out.
[51:07.080 -> 51:09.480] We always like to talk about a specific moment
[51:09.480 -> 51:12.320] on high performance and just delve into it
[51:12.320 -> 51:13.280] a little bit more deeply.
[51:13.280 -> 51:15.560] And often, you know, when it comes to the life
[51:15.560 -> 51:17.480] that you've lived, it's about winning the trophies
[51:17.480 -> 51:18.680] and the titles and all of that.
[51:18.680 -> 51:21.280] But I'd really like to talk to you about the moment
[51:21.280 -> 51:24.600] that you decided to walk away.
[51:24.600 -> 51:27.800] Because I think that that is a really interesting thing.
[51:27.800 -> 51:30.480] We spend our lives being told never quit, never give up.
[51:30.480 -> 51:32.440] You know, sometimes the best thing you can do
[51:32.440 -> 51:35.080] is to step away from something.
[51:35.080 -> 51:38.040] Yeah, well, look, 20 years is,
[51:38.040 -> 51:40.800] you don't get 20 years for murder, do you?
[51:40.800 -> 51:42.960] So it's a long time.
[51:42.960 -> 52:07.960] And it's a long time without your family. Ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia, ia them something. At some point the team needs you to allow them to try something
[52:07.960 -> 52:14.360] different. Yeah. And you just know it's time. So pull the trigger and get out. I
[52:14.360 -> 52:20.280] think, you know, the emotion around the family is totally understandable and
[52:20.280 -> 52:23.520] I think sometimes only when you step back and you're in probably
[52:23.520 -> 52:27.600] quite a reflective period of your life now where you look back on what happened.
[52:27.600 -> 52:28.960] And I think we can't have a conversation
[52:28.960 -> 52:31.640] about your success without actually paying the respects
[52:31.640 -> 52:34.520] to the amazing blended family you've got
[52:34.520 -> 52:37.000] and how the people around you
[52:37.000 -> 52:38.800] had to allow you to do what you did.
[52:39.840 -> 52:40.840] Yeah, that's right.
[52:40.840 -> 52:42.560] And you know, you keep talking about them,
[52:42.560 -> 52:43.760] I'll keep crying, so.
[52:44.880 -> 53:05.000] They miss out, like I don't know how many birthdays you miss. Hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, hei, Ia whakariki i mi, eri i kia.
[53:05.000 -> 53:45.000] Ia ia whakho, i mewno Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau.
[53:45.000 -> 53:46.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:46.000 -> 53:47.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:47.000 -> 53:48.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:48.000 -> 53:49.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:49.000 -> 53:50.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:50.000 -> 53:51.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:51.000 -> 53:52.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:52.000 -> 53:53.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:53.000 -> 53:54.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:54.000 -> 53:55.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:55.000 -> 53:56.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:56.000 -> 53:57.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:57.000 -> 53:58.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:58.000 -> 53:59.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[53:59.000 -> 54:00.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[54:00.000 -> 54:01.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[54:01.000 -> 54:02.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[54:02.000 -> 54:03.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[54:03.000 -> 54:04.000] Hau, hau, hau.
[54:04.000 -> 54:06.000] Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, hau. Hau, hau, atau. Atau, atau, atau.
[54:06.000 -> 54:08.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:08.000 -> 54:10.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:10.000 -> 54:12.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:12.000 -> 54:14.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:14.000 -> 54:16.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:16.000 -> 54:18.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:18.000 -> 54:20.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:20.000 -> 54:22.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:22.000 -> 54:24.000] Atau, atau, atau.
[54:24.000 -> 54:27.000] Atau, atau, atau. And sometimes, you know, that can be a bit awkward too.
[54:27.000 -> 54:28.000] Difficult.
[54:28.000 -> 54:30.000] We'll talk about that ourselves.
[54:30.000 -> 54:31.000] Yeah.
[54:31.000 -> 54:33.000] It's hard. I think the other challenge you've got is,
[54:33.000 -> 54:35.000] you know, I know that you've got a blended family
[54:35.000 -> 54:37.000] and you always wanted all your kids to feel totally at home
[54:37.000 -> 54:38.000] in whichever house they were in.
[54:38.000 -> 54:40.000] I think what I love about that is you talk about
[54:40.000 -> 54:42.000] team before self in your rugby career.
[54:42.000 -> 54:46.800] It feels to me like that's your version of team before self in a family setting as well which is then
[54:46.800 -> 54:52.380] puts challenges on other people right it does and you know their happiness is
[54:52.380 -> 54:57.180] what's most important nice well I'm so pleased to chat to you here in London
[54:57.180 -> 54:59.480] where you get to have a bit of a break with the family yeah that's how you
[54:59.480 -> 55:03.640] grow before they get even louder outside let's do this um we finished with a few
[55:03.640 -> 55:07.360] quick fires the first one is the three non-negotiable behaviours
[55:07.360 -> 55:10.640] that you and ideally the people around you would buy into.
[55:10.640 -> 55:13.000] Honesty, loyalty and hardworking.
[55:13.000 -> 55:14.120] Very good.
[55:14.120 -> 55:17.720] What's your greatest strength and your biggest weakness?
[55:17.720 -> 55:20.320] My competitiveness is both of them.
[55:21.880 -> 55:24.160] Your greatest strength's always your biggest weakness.
[55:24.160 -> 56:06.680] How important is legacy to you? Mae'r mahaliau main e, kuaiaia, kuaiaia, kua And the final one is, for people that have listened to this, it's been a really fascinating
[56:06.680 -> 56:10.880] conversation. It's the final question really that you'd like to leave with the answer ringing
[56:10.880 -> 56:16.040] in their ears. What would you now say is your one golden rule for living a high performance
[56:16.040 -> 56:17.040] life?
[56:17.040 -> 57:06.560] Be the best version that you can be. Don't compromise yourself. Don't compromise your Etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, etao, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, eto, it's been wonderful. Thanks, cheers.
[57:06.560 -> 57:13.480] Damien, one of those conversations where when he speaks you listen and he's
[57:13.480 -> 57:20.400] quietly spoken, he's very considered with what he says, but so much impactful
[57:20.400 -> 57:28.220] conversation in that chat. I think it was a utter privilege to be in the presence of somebody that you might dub
[57:28.220 -> 57:34.700] them as old school, but like he said at the start, he's just a purveyor of common sense
[57:34.700 -> 57:38.580] and helping make it common practice. And that's what I've taken away from it.
[57:38.580 -> 57:43.300] I mean, I love the fact that, you know, he shared with us in pretty deep detail, you
[57:43.300 -> 57:45.120] know, how he would run the most
[57:45.120 -> 57:48.800] famous rugby team on the planet. And I love this idea of no rules, because I think people get
[57:48.800 -> 57:54.000] caught up with believing that, I mean, what about when I said to him, you need rules to create a
[57:54.000 -> 57:59.040] culture, and he's like, no, that's not creating a culture, that's forcing a culture. And I think
[57:59.040 -> 58:02.320] it's a brilliant distinction. And it's one that I hadn't even considered. I'm like, right, set the
[58:02.320 -> 58:08.600] rules, that sets the culture, and everyone follows. And then he comes with a total curveball, and, you know,
[58:08.600 -> 58:11.200] and it does leave you thinking long and hard about rules, doesn't it?
[58:11.200 -> 58:16.800] Yeah, that lovely line that he used about rules are there to guide the brave and inhibit the foolish,
[58:16.800 -> 58:20.400] the idea of catching people out rather than catching people in.
[58:20.400 -> 58:24.200] We know that people are going to make mistakes. Why? Because they're human.
[58:24.200 -> 58:27.040] So rules are there then to punish people for that.
[58:27.040 -> 58:30.920] Whereas the distinction of having high expectations,
[58:30.920 -> 58:34.360] non-negotiable expectations, goes back to,
[58:34.360 -> 58:35.920] you know, like when we've had this conversation
[58:35.920 -> 58:38.520] in the past around the work of a guy called
[58:38.520 -> 58:40.960] Robert Rosenthal that did a famous study
[58:40.960 -> 58:42.680] called the Pygmalion effect,
[58:42.680 -> 58:45.120] where he went into a classroom and picked
[58:45.120 -> 58:48.920] kids out at random and said, these kids are going to be high performers. And over the
[58:48.920 -> 58:53.080] course of the year, those kids outperformed the rest of the class. And then he revealed
[58:53.080 -> 58:58.400] that actually he just picked them at random, but it was our expectations of those children
[58:58.400 -> 59:04.480] that meant they lived up to them. And I think when you have high performance expectations,
[59:04.480 -> 59:07.360] people will naturally want to strive to live up to them.
[59:07.360 -> 59:09.360] Yeah, I thought it was really interesting.
[59:09.360 -> 59:12.840] And, you know, the thing I love about doing these interviews,
[59:12.840 -> 59:14.320] when you do them face to face,
[59:14.320 -> 59:16.080] is that you realise that the things they tell you,
[59:16.080 -> 59:16.960] they actually live them.
[59:16.960 -> 59:18.560] So he talks about family first,
[59:18.560 -> 59:20.280] and, you know, people need to understand
[59:20.280 -> 59:23.160] that he had like six of his, or five of his six kids
[59:23.160 -> 59:24.280] were with him at Twickenham
[59:24.280 -> 59:27.840] when we recorded the interview. And, you know, they all went and had a load of drinks afterwards
[59:27.840 -> 59:32.600] and you know, to see him getting emotional while talking about his family is one thing.
[59:32.600 -> 59:35.880] If he's then travelling the world, never seen and doesn't pick up the phone, isn't trying
[59:35.880 -> 59:40.960] to create, you know, this great family atmosphere, then you question it. But the fact that he
[59:40.960 -> 59:43.760] wells up talking about his family and you look to your right and you've got his five
[59:43.760 -> 59:47.760] kids all standing in the room is a, is a really good reminder that he wells up talking about his family and you look to your right and you've got his five kids all standing in the room is a really good reminder that he lives
[59:47.760 -> 59:48.760] what he says.
[59:48.760 -> 59:52.560] Yeah, another example, he talks about having this inclusive culture.
[59:52.560 -> 59:57.720] You know, I brought my son along today and he's been adopted as a member of the Hanson
[59:57.720 -> 01:00:01.000] family, you know, they've incorporated him into it, they've made him welcome, they've
[01:00:01.000 -> 01:00:03.480] been interested and engaging with him.
[01:00:03.480 -> 01:00:29.280] And again, it's another sign that this is a family that really does practice what they preach. Mae'n ddiddorol i ni fod yn gallu profi rhan them with you on a journey. And for us, it's been a privilege to have been able to experience a small part of that.
[01:00:29.280 -> 01:00:30.160] Toby Van Kessel Thanks, mate.
[01:00:30.160 -> 01:00:30.720] Steve McLaughlin Thank you, mate.
[01:00:32.960 -> 01:00:36.880] Well, there we go. Another incredible conversation. We were really moved,
[01:00:36.880 -> 01:00:40.240] actually, talking to Steve, and I'm sure you were as well, listening to this.
[01:00:40.240 -> 01:00:43.520] I would love you to do one thing for me, and it's to share this episode with somebody.
