In this special episode, the hosts engage in a live audience conversation with Brad Sugars, a bestselling author, business coach, and owner of ActionCOACH, a global business coaching firm. Brad's mission is to empower entrepreneurs and business owners with proven tools and strategies to achieve success, freedom, and fulfillment.
The discussion centers around the importance of learning before earning in entrepreneurship. Brad emphasizes that many business owners often know what to do but lack the confidence and validation to take action. He stresses the role of coaches and mentors in providing encouragement and affirmation, acting as cheerleaders who help entrepreneurs believe in their abilities.
Brad illustrates this point with an anecdote about his children's soccer team. He explains that when teaching them to improve their kicking technique, one girl quickly gave up after a few attempts, claiming she was no good at it. Brad's response was to challenge her to continue practicing, emphasizing that she would improve with persistence. This anecdote highlights the importance of perseverance and the belief in one's ability to learn and grow.
Brad emphasizes that skills and knowledge can be acquired through learning and practice. He uses the example of running a marathon, explaining that one cannot simply decide to run a marathon without proper training and preparation. Similarly, in business, entrepreneurs need to invest in their own development and acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.
The conversation also touches on the concept of setting goals and growing into them. Brad explains that when setting a goal, it should be challenging enough to require growth and development. This process of growing into one's goals helps individuals expand their capabilities and achieve new levels of success.
Brad delves into the significance of self-talk and internal validation. He stresses that external opinions and validation from others should not dictate one's self-worth. Instead, individuals should focus on the dialogue they have with themselves and strive to maintain a positive and empowering internal narrative.
When hiring employees, Brad emphasizes the importance of values alignment. He believes that hiring people who share the company's values and are motivated by its mission is crucial for building a strong and cohesive team. Brad's approach prioritizes finding individuals who are a good fit for the company culture rather than solely focusing on their skills and experience.
Brad concludes the conversation by highlighting the order of importance in life: people, money, and things. He emphasizes that investing in people and relationships is paramount, followed by financial stability, and finally, material possessions. Brad encourages entrepreneurs to prioritize building strong teams, investing wisely, and enjoying life's experiences without becoming overly attached to material possessions.
[00:00.000 -> 00:03.840] Hi there, welcome along to another bite-sized episode of the High Performance Podcast.
[00:03.840 -> 00:09.360] We know that you don't always have an hour or an hour and a half to spare each week to listen to the latest episodes.
[00:09.360 -> 00:13.560] So we love to drop these bite-sized episodes for you at the end of every single week,
[00:13.560 -> 00:17.360] just to give you a shorter bit of high performance inspiration.
[00:17.360 -> 00:22.840] Now, usually these episodes are a small part of a longer conversation,
[00:22.840 -> 00:25.200] but on this occasion, we decided to do something
[00:25.200 -> 00:26.600] a little bit different.
[00:26.600 -> 00:29.600] Away from the podcast, Damien and I quite often go
[00:29.600 -> 00:32.600] to seminars or to talks or to business presentations
[00:32.600 -> 00:35.300] and we talk to people about the lessons we've learned
[00:35.300 -> 00:36.800] from the High Performance Podcast.
[00:36.800 -> 00:39.600] We did that recently and we also interviewed
[00:39.600 -> 00:42.200] a guy called Brad Sugars.
[00:42.200 -> 00:44.800] Now, Brad Sugars' mission is to give entrepreneurs
[00:44.800 -> 00:45.240] and business owners proven tools that they need guy called Brad Sugars. Now Brad Sugars' mission is to give entrepreneurs and
[00:45.240 -> 00:49.840] business owners proven tools that they need to start running a successful
[00:49.840 -> 00:52.860] business, therefore getting freedom, therefore enjoying more of what you
[00:52.860 -> 00:57.560] actually like to do. And I think we have to be really careful in the modern world.
[00:57.560 -> 01:01.080] I listen to a lot of podcasts where people talk constantly about the hustle
[01:01.080 -> 01:05.320] and the grind and critical of people that don't give blood,
[01:05.320 -> 01:12.080] sweat and tears and 120% 24-7. But the truth is, if you're going to start to grow a business,
[01:12.080 -> 01:16.640] it isn't about the grind or the hustle. Of course, hard work is part of it. But what
[01:16.640 -> 01:23.000] about action plans? What about working smarter rather than working harder? What about ensuring
[01:23.000 -> 01:26.800] that your business is run in a
[01:24.560 -> 01:28.640] way where it's profitable and it's an
[01:26.800 -> 01:30.800] enterprise that actually works for you?
[01:28.640 -> 01:33.560] And Brad Sugars often uses the phrase
[01:30.800 -> 01:35.280] learn before you earn and this is a
[01:33.560 -> 01:37.320] conversation that Damien and I had with
[01:35.280 -> 01:39.120] Brad. Listen the audio is not brilliant
[01:37.320 -> 01:40.280] because we originally weren't thinking
[01:39.120 -> 01:41.640] about putting this out as a podcast
[01:40.280 -> 01:43.200] episode, it was just us having a
[01:41.640 -> 01:44.840] conversation with Brad for the people in
[01:43.200 -> 01:46.760] the room. But I think there are some
[01:44.840 -> 01:46.760] really good things here and this is a guy episode, it was just us having a conversation with Brad for the people in the room. But I think there are some
[01:44.800 -> 01:48.360] really good things here and this is a guy
[01:46.760 -> 01:50.280] with over 30 years of business
[01:48.360 -> 01:52.360] experience, he's the CEO of numerous
[01:50.280 -> 01:54.760] companies, he owns a business called
[01:52.360 -> 01:56.920] Action Coach, but most importantly of
[01:54.760 -> 01:58.320] all, if you're listening to this as an
[01:56.920 -> 01:59.920] entrepreneur at the start of your
[01:58.320 -> 02:02.080] journey or you're struggling or you're
[01:59.920 -> 02:03.680] in a difficult place, that's exactly
[02:02.080 -> 02:05.280] where Brad has been. So he knows what it
[02:03.680 -> 02:07.960] takes to overcome those roadblocks and to shift those obstacles and he is trying
[02:07.960 -> 02:12.160] to drive an entire community of entrepreneurs. So for this bite-sized
[02:12.160 -> 02:16.280] episode of the High Performance Podcast, instead of giving you a short clip from
[02:16.280 -> 02:20.280] a longer episode, we're just going to let you hear the kinds of things that we
[02:20.280 -> 02:24.160] discussed recently when we sat down with Brad Sugar's in front of a live audience
[02:24.160 -> 02:25.820] for a conversation.
[02:25.820 -> 02:27.960] As I say, the audio isn't up to the usual standard
[02:27.960 -> 02:30.240] we would like, but I still think there's loads
[02:30.240 -> 02:31.400] for you to take from this episode.
[02:31.400 -> 02:35.560] So enjoy Brad Sugars on this bite-sized episode
[02:35.560 -> 02:37.320] of the High Performance Podcast.
[02:38.480 -> 02:40.600] I think in business a lot of the time,
[02:40.600 -> 02:44.200] and a lot of the reason why I love coaching,
[02:44.200 -> 02:46.320] most business owners know what to
[02:46.320 -> 02:47.320] do.
[02:47.320 -> 02:51.560] They just want someone to validate and affirm, yes, go for it, yes, do that.
[02:51.560 -> 02:56.560] And I think a lot of the time being a cheerleader for ... A coach is often just a cheerleader
[02:56.560 -> 03:00.080] for someone who says, yeah, you can do that.
[03:00.080 -> 03:12.360] If I struggle at sales, it's because I don't know anything about sales. Like people will say, I tell the story of my kids, now Kobe's 20 and Kenzie's 19,
[03:12.360 -> 03:17.360] when they were under 11s, I played soccer and I was their coach.
[03:17.360 -> 03:21.240] And there was this one young girl on the team and I was teaching them to do laces kicks
[03:21.240 -> 03:24.520] because, you know, kids always kicked on the toe or inside foot.
[03:24.520 -> 03:29.360] And I sent them to the fence to kick a hundred, kick the ball a hundred times with your laces kicks, because you know, kids always kicked on the toe or inside foot, and I sent them to the fence to kick the ball a hundred times with your laces at the fence,
[03:29.360 -> 03:33.760] and one young girl runs over after five times and says, coach, I'm no good at that.
[03:33.760 -> 03:37.640] I said, good, do 95 more and tell me if you got better.
[03:37.640 -> 03:42.920] And of course, after 95 more, she got better, and what happens is people say, oh, I'm no
[03:42.920 -> 03:44.480] good at sails.
[03:44.480 -> 03:45.160] Really? How many sails books have you read? Or none? Oh, okay. And what happens is people say, oh, I'm no good at sales.
[03:45.160 -> 03:47.120] Really, how many sales books have you read?
[03:47.120 -> 03:48.500] Oh, none.
[03:48.500 -> 03:51.040] Oh, okay, how many sales training courses
[03:51.040 -> 03:51.880] have you been to?
[03:51.880 -> 03:52.700] Oh, none.
[03:52.700 -> 03:54.680] Well, how did you decide you were no good at sales?
[03:54.680 -> 03:56.800] Well, I did 10 sales calls one time
[03:56.800 -> 03:59.040] and I messed all of them up.
[03:59.040 -> 04:01.000] Well, of course you're not good at sales.
[04:01.000 -> 04:03.480] You've never done any training and never done anything.
[04:03.480 -> 04:07.040] And so, for me, you can always learn pretty much anything.
[04:07.040 -> 04:09.720] If I want to run a marathon, I've got to go and study how to run a marathon.
[04:09.720 -> 04:12.480] I can't just automatically run a marathon.
[04:12.480 -> 04:15.240] I have to learn that sort of thing.
[04:15.240 -> 04:17.800] And it goes back to growing into your goals.
[04:17.800 -> 04:23.160] You know, your goals, when you set a goal, you can't achieve it.
[04:23.160 -> 04:27.160] Because if you could have you would have and and so if
[04:27.160 -> 04:33.240] I set the goal by definition I have to learn and grow into that goal and that's
[04:33.240 -> 04:37.280] part that's one of the main reasons to set a goal is so that you have to grow
[04:37.280 -> 04:41.640] there's an external view and an internal view of life and that external view is
[04:41.640 -> 04:48.780] taking other people's opinion of you and actually validating yourself from it and people tell you you're great and people
[04:48.780 -> 04:54.580] tell you you're awful. If you take either of those then you're validating external
[04:54.580 -> 04:58.540] opinions of you. My simple statement of that is it's what you say to yourself
[04:58.540 -> 05:06.460] about yourself when you're by yourself that matters most. So how you talk to you, how you communicate with you
[05:08.040 -> 05:10.060] is more important than what anyone else
[05:10.060 -> 05:12.500] could ever say to you.
[05:12.500 -> 05:14.960] We look for values match first.
[05:14.960 -> 05:17.860] The simplest way to say this is
[05:17.860 -> 05:21.680] you can't train nice, but you can hire nice people.
[05:21.680 -> 05:23.500] You can't motivate people, but you can hire people
[05:23.500 -> 05:25.600] who are motivated by what you're doing.
[05:25.600 -> 05:28.600] And so we look for that value first.
[05:29.460 -> 05:32.020] Because who we are and why we do what we do
[05:32.020 -> 05:34.860] is more important than what we do.
[05:35.720 -> 05:38.080] People, money, things, that's the order.
[05:38.080 -> 05:40.400] People first, money second, things third.
[05:40.400 -> 05:43.180] Build your people, they take care of everything,
[05:43.180 -> 05:50.080] family or business. Money, it's better to have money in the bank or money invested than it is to have things.
[05:50.080 -> 05:56.400] And things, invest first and pay for things out of your return on investment rather than that.
[05:56.400 -> 05:57.360] But enjoy things.
[05:57.360 -> 06:00.640] I spend a lot of money on things, but as a percentage, it's very low.
[06:04.160 -> 06:06.760] Well, I hope that you felt you got a lot from that short
[06:06.760 -> 06:10.280] conversation with Brad Sugars. There are loads of entrepreneurs in the back
