[00:00.000 -> 00:05.800] Hi there, how you going? It's Jake Humphrey here. Welcome along to another Bite Size episode of the High Performance Podcast.
[00:05.800 -> 00:14.100] This is where myself and Professor Damian Hughes, we just take part of a conversation we've had with someone on a previous episode and we just share it with you.
[00:14.100 -> 00:25.540] And I'll just talk for a couple of minutes beforehand about the things that you're going to hear and the things that maybe you can learn from this conversation. And today you're going to hear from Vicky Patterson. And Vicky is known for
[00:25.540 -> 00:30.720] many things, most famously, I guess, for being a reality TV star, for being on Geordie Shore.
[00:30.720 -> 00:36.680] And we actually entitled this episode, Listen Without Prejudice, because Vicky is in a position
[00:36.680 -> 00:41.000] where prejudice kind of follows everywhere she goes. Other people's perception often
[00:41.000 -> 00:46.000] precedes the reality. And if you listen to the full episode with Vicky, it's episode 99 on high performance,
[00:46.000 -> 00:49.000] then what you actually get is the reality.
[00:49.000 -> 00:51.000] You get someone who has been on a journey.
[00:51.000 -> 00:54.000] By her own admission, she's made some serious mistakes,
[00:54.000 -> 00:56.000] but she's grown and she's changed,
[00:56.000 -> 00:57.000] and she's a different person now
[00:57.000 -> 00:59.000] to the person that made those mistakes.
[00:59.000 -> 01:00.000] But all too often in this world,
[01:00.000 -> 01:02.000] I think that we don't give people credit for that.
[01:02.000 -> 01:09.800] People, particularly now, make one mistake, say one thing, share one opinion, the internet never forgets, it
[01:09.800 -> 01:14.360] haunts them forever, and we don't believe that people can change or adapt. But they
[01:14.360 -> 01:19.720] absolutely can. And I think quite often, you know, people see what they want, and often
[01:19.720 -> 01:24.200] that has nothing to do with the truth. And if you listen to this episode with Vicky Patterson,
[01:24.200 -> 01:28.800] you will hear the truth. And I heard a great quote some time ago. Well, there's two actually
[01:28.800 -> 01:34.000] that I want to share with you. The first thing is that other people's opinion of me is none
[01:34.000 -> 01:39.000] of my business. Like, isn't that powerful? I think that's a great quote. You know, if
[01:39.000 -> 01:42.600] you do my job and you talk about football on the television, everybody will have an
[01:42.600 -> 01:50.080] opinion. The most common thing that I get thrown my way is that I'm smug or arrogant. But that's just people assuming that if you do the job that
[01:50.080 -> 01:54.720] I do, you must be smug or you must be arrogant. I mean, there's no, I don't think anyway, there's no
[01:54.720 -> 02:01.680] evidence to support that. But their opinion of me is none of my business. I think that's a powerful
[02:01.680 -> 02:07.000] thing to remember. It's a good quote to go with. And another one that I saw a few years ago was,
[02:07.000 -> 02:11.000] don't waste time worrying about the false opinion of others
[02:11.000 -> 02:14.000] that they've created purely to make themselves feel better.
[02:14.000 -> 02:16.000] And I think that's an important one as well.
[02:16.000 -> 02:18.000] We have to remember when we have an opinion about someone,
[02:18.000 -> 02:20.000] why do we have that opinion?
[02:20.000 -> 02:22.000] I mean, my wife won't mind me saying that when I said to her,
[02:22.000 -> 02:24.000] Vicky Patterson's going to come on High Performance,
[02:24.000 -> 02:25.800] she was like, why?
[02:25.800 -> 02:29.200] What would someone from Geordie Shore have to do with high performance?
[02:29.200 -> 02:30.280] Well, you know what?
[02:30.280 -> 02:34.160] Listen to the full episode, episode 99 of high performance and find out why.
[02:34.160 -> 02:36.800] And there's one big change actually that Vicky's made in my life.
[02:36.800 -> 02:40.840] She talks about having number one days, a real proper break.
[02:40.840 -> 02:43.560] And since then, every single week in my diary,
[02:43.560 -> 02:51.000] I use like an online diary on my phone, there is a number one day and absolutely nothing changes my number one
[02:51.000 -> 02:56.600] day. But anyway, let's get into this short quote from Vicki Patterson talking specifically
[02:56.600 -> 03:00.400] about when she went on Geordie Shore and that desire to please other people to act in a
[03:00.400 -> 03:05.000] way that she thought that other people wanted from her. I think it's something that
[03:05.000 -> 03:09.320] a lot of us do. And if we could learn how not to do it, I think we'd be in a better
[03:09.320 -> 03:14.080] place. Anyway, here's a short clip from Vicky Patterson, who joined us on the High Performance
[03:14.080 -> 03:17.200] Podcast.
[03:17.200 -> 03:22.120] Can we talk about the journey from where it all started to sitting on a high performance
[03:22.120 -> 03:27.760] podcast talking about numbering your days and success and commitment
[03:27.760 -> 03:30.720] and hard work and all the things you're discussing.
[03:30.720 -> 03:33.120] Because you started this podcast by talking about the fact
[03:33.120 -> 03:34.760] that we all change, we all grow all the time,
[03:34.760 -> 03:35.920] everything's a journey.
[03:35.920 -> 03:39.800] I'm really interested to know when the big change happened
[03:39.800 -> 03:41.920] for you and you talk in your book
[03:41.920 -> 03:43.200] and it is a really interesting book,
[03:43.200 -> 03:44.520] I'd encourage anyone to read it.
[03:44.520 -> 03:45.000] You talked about the fact that from the outside, when you were kind of coming through and you talk in your book, and it is a really interesting book, I'd encourage anyone to read it,
[03:45.000 -> 03:47.000] you talked about the fact that from the outside,
[03:47.000 -> 03:50.000] when you were kind of coming through and you were on Geordie Shore
[03:50.000 -> 03:53.000] and everything seemed great and you were emerging as a celebrity,
[03:53.000 -> 03:55.000] horrible word, but that's what was happening,
[03:55.000 -> 03:58.000] you actually weren't authentic and you weren't good to be around
[03:58.000 -> 04:01.000] and you weren't really enjoying things.
[04:01.000 -> 04:06.120] When did you decide that that was not the Vicky Patterson you wanted to be
[04:06.120 -> 04:07.720] and that actually this, what we're seeing now
[04:07.720 -> 04:10.400] is where you wanted to get to?
[04:10.400 -> 04:13.400] The change in me from being like this young,
[04:13.400 -> 04:17.280] really excited girl who was plucked from absolute obscurity
[04:17.280 -> 04:19.720] and put on a reality TV show,
[04:19.720 -> 04:21.640] into being like the Vicky Patterson
[04:21.640 -> 04:22.880] people saw on Jodie Shaw,
[04:22.880 -> 04:27.920] happened so gradually that initially I didn't notice i fod fel yw Vicky Patterson, mae pobl sy'n gweld hwn yn y show Jodie, yn digwydd mor gyflym, i ddechrau, dydw i ddim yn sylwi,
[04:27.920 -> 04:31.000] ac roeddwn i'n cael fy nghyflawni ac yn cael fy nhau o hynny.
[04:31.000 -> 04:33.440] Mae'n rhaid i chi meddwl, roeddwn i'n debyg o'r 20au,
[04:33.440 -> 04:37.200] ac roeddwn i mor ymgynghorol,
[04:37.200 -> 04:39.360] ac nid oedd gen i'r tŵyr
[04:39.360 -> 04:43.120] i ymgyrchu'r newydd politig
[04:43.120 -> 04:45.000] o'r byd rydw i'n ei chael. Ac roedd y teimlad o'r llawysgrif to navigate the new politics of the world I was in.
[04:45.200 -> 04:49.040] And that feeling of like powerlessness
[04:49.040 -> 04:50.560] and being out of me depth,
[04:50.560 -> 04:54.000] it manifested itself in some really ugly traits.
[04:55.040 -> 04:58.000] And I became defensive and aggressive and angry.
[04:58.000 -> 04:59.480] And even more than that,
[04:59.480 -> 05:01.920] like I became this caricature
[05:01.920 -> 05:04.360] of what I thought everybody wanted.
[05:04.360 -> 05:26.720] This really bullshy, Geordie girl. And like, don't get us wrong. Roeddwn i'n ddod yn ffyrdd o'r hyn rydw i'n meddwl bod pawb yn eisiau. Y ffyrdd o'r hyn sy'n iawn, y ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrddn cael fy nghymryd yn llwyr. Ac fel y dweud, roedd yn gweithredol, ond roedd
[05:26.720 -> 05:32.400] rhai cyfnodau'n byw, lle rydw i'n sylweddoli bod yn ymgyrchu a'r cymorth ar gyfer
[05:32.400 -> 05:34.000] ymdrech.
[05:34.000 -> 05:36.000] Fel, er enghraifft, Vicky?
[05:36.000 -> 05:42.080] Felly, rwy'n teimlo'n dda iawn yn dweud hyn i ddau ffyrdd, ond dwi ddim yn gwybod pam. Roedd gen i
[05:42.080 -> 05:45.040] sex ar y teli, ac nid yw peth sydd ddim yn gwybod by unrhyw un.
[05:46.160 -> 05:52.400] Rydw i wedi siarad amdano'n ddiddorol am ychydig mlynedd nawr, ond roedd angen i ni ddweud amdano'n ddiddorol am
[05:52.400 -> 05:59.440] yr hyn oherwydd roedd yn ddiddorol iawn i mi. Dydw i ddim yn grwpio yn y cwmni gwledig. Roeddwn i'n grwpio yn
[05:59.440 -> 06:02.960] y cwmni a oeddech chi'n mynd i'r fath a'ch bod chi'n cael ychydig o ddreidio, ac yna roeddech chi'n rhoi eich gweithwyr
[06:02.960 -> 06:05.000] ac yna roeddech chi'n dod allan i'r ystafell,
[06:05.000 -> 06:09.000] ac roeddwn i ddim yn ymwneud â'r ffwrdd o gwmpas y cwm, felly roeddwn i'n rhan o'r ffwrdd.
[06:09.000 -> 06:26.000] Roeddwn i'n gwybod bod pawb eraill ar y ffyrdd fawr rhwng fy hun a fy mam,
[06:26.000 -> 06:28.000] ac mae hi'n
[06:28.000 -> 06:30.000] ysbrydol fawr i mi, ac un o'r ffrindiau gallan
[06:30.000 -> 06:32.000] ac yn ymdrechus iawn.
[06:32.000 -> 06:34.000] Felly,
[06:34.000 -> 06:36.000] roedd hynny'n fawr yn trafodol.
[06:36.000 -> 06:38.000] Ond hefyd,
[06:38.000 -> 06:40.000] roedd gen i lawer o'r stic, roedd gen i lawer o'r
[06:40.000 -> 06:42.000] ddysg, roedd gen i lawer o'r gofynion.
[06:42.000 -> 06:44.000] Ac roedd yn anodd iawn
[06:44.000 -> 06:45.000] i ddod o'r gwaith hynny unwaith y gwdod o'r ffordd, i fod yn rhywbeth eraill,
[06:45.000 -> 06:47.000] unwaith i mi fod yn rhywbeth.
[06:47.000 -> 06:49.000] Ac yn aml, rwy'n meddwl,
[06:49.000 -> 06:50.000] nid oes angen i mi ddweud
[06:50.000 -> 07:08.000] pa mor ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd y gwnawn i, a pha mor ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r ffyrdd o'r person hwn. Ond pan edrych chi'n ôl ar y cyfnod hon, Vicky, a allwch chi gweld cyngorion sy'n
[07:08.000 -> 07:10.000] yn ymdrech, a'ch mynd i'r
[07:10.000 -> 07:12.000] os oedd wedi cael ei swyddo yno, gallai i mi
[07:12.000 -> 07:14.000] ddod yn awgrym.
[07:14.000 -> 07:17.000] Ie, fel, fel fy nghyfyrwyr,
[07:17.000 -> 07:19.000] rwy'n 34 nawr,
[07:19.000 -> 07:21.000] a roeddwn i 22 pan ddechreuais
[07:21.000 -> 07:23.000] cael fy nhwri i Jodie Shaw, ac mae
[07:23.000 -> 07:25.080] rhaid i ddod yn ôl i ddau o 34-oed yn ymgyrchion fel Jodie Shaw. O mae rhai sy'n ymwneud â chyflawni 34-oed
[07:25.080 -> 07:27.160] yn ymwneud â Jodie Shaw.
[07:27.160 -> 07:29.240] Oherwydd os byddai rhywun wedi dweud wrthym nawr,
[07:29.240 -> 07:30.560] pawb eraill yn siarad,
[07:30.560 -> 07:30.960] byddwn i'n dweud,
[07:30.960 -> 07:32.280] so what?
[07:32.280 -> 07:33.640] So what?
[07:33.640 -> 07:35.200] Fel na dwi ddim.
[07:35.200 -> 07:36.520] Ond yn ôl yno,
[07:36.520 -> 07:37.240] chi'n gwybod,
[07:37.240 -> 07:38.040] yn eich 20au,
[07:38.040 -> 07:39.720] pan fyddwch chi'n
[07:39.720 -> 07:42.080] yn eich bod chi'n ddifrifol iawn
[07:42.080 -> 07:44.400] ac mae gennych chi eisiau bod fel pawb eraill
[07:44.400 -> 07:47.000] ac mae gennych chi ffyrdd o ddiddorol ddiddorol ddiddorol ddiddorol ddifrifol iawn, ac mae'n rhaid i chi fod fel pawb eraill, ac mae'n llwyr o ddiddordeb eu hunain.
[07:47.000 -> 07:51.000] Mae'r ystyrion hwnnw yn cael ei gael yn eich gofyn.
[07:51.000 -> 07:58.000] A rwy'n credu, fel Jodie Shaw, fel Love Island, mae'r holl ddiddordebau hynny,
[07:58.000 -> 08:01.000] a oeddwn i'n ymddangos yn ychydig, ddim yn ddweud fy nghywir,
[08:01.000 -> 08:26.200] mae gennym dynol o bobl sydd eisiau eu hunain, ac yn fwy o'r amser na ddim, maen nhw'n ifanc, ac maen nhw'n ddymunwyr, ac maen nhw'n eithaf ychydig yn ymdrech i fod yn wyr, ac mae'r holl bethau hynny'n gallu gwneud i chi ddim ond yn ddiddorol. moments looking back where I think to myself, that producer wasn't really your friend,
[08:26.200 -> 08:29.320] or you could have behaved better there,
[08:29.320 -> 08:31.360] or you should have demanded a break,
[08:31.360 -> 08:32.880] like, you know, various things,
[08:32.880 -> 08:35.920] but hindsight's a lovely thing, isn't it?
[08:37.720 -> 08:38.560] Good, isn't it?
[08:39.520 -> 08:42.760] I saw a poster for sale a couple of years ago
[08:42.760 -> 08:43.720] on a market store, and it said,
[08:43.720 -> 08:45.920] you're entitled to your negative opinions of me,
[08:45.920 -> 08:47.560] but please talk slowly.
[08:47.560 -> 08:50.480] I only have two middle fingers to go around.
[08:50.480 -> 08:53.880] And I don't think that's a bad way to operate, you know.
[08:53.880 -> 08:55.380] But then there's also part of my brain that thinks,
[08:55.380 -> 08:57.480] well, if you are putting a middle finger up to people
[08:57.480 -> 08:58.720] with a negative opinion of you,
[08:58.720 -> 08:59.760] you're wasting your time worrying
[08:59.760 -> 09:01.000] about their negative opinion.
[09:01.000 -> 09:04.200] And actually the high performance mindset is not to worry.
[09:04.200 -> 09:09.920] But certainly the high performance mindset is not to go with preconceived ideas. And I'm talking here about
[09:09.920 -> 09:15.720] preconceived ideas of anything, because all too often, you're hamstrung by those preconceptions.
[09:15.720 -> 09:20.680] Let's imagine if Vicky didn't come on high performance because our preconceived ideas
[09:20.680 -> 09:28.000] of her meant that we decided not to have that conversation. The podcast would be a poorer podcast for not having had Vicky on it
[09:28.000 -> 09:30.000] because she's got so much to share.
[09:30.000 -> 09:32.000] And take that into your everyday life.
[09:32.000 -> 09:36.000] Every single thing that you do, you will have a preconceived idea
[09:36.000 -> 09:38.000] of what's going to happen, how it's going to go,
[09:38.000 -> 09:40.000] what's going to be successful, what's going to be a failure.
[09:40.000 -> 09:43.000] And those things then are almost like invisible handcuffs
[09:43.000 -> 09:46.640] that stop you from actually exploring what's ahead of you.
[09:46.640 -> 09:50.120] So try and live just a week with no preconceived ideas
[09:50.120 -> 09:52.760] of people or things or events,
[09:52.760 -> 09:54.400] and just see how freeing it is.
[09:55.440 -> 09:57.520] Don't forget you can listen to the full episode,
