In this episode of the High Performance podcast, Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith emphasizes the significance of self-belief and positive thinking in attaining success. Asher-Smith highlights that focusing on negative thoughts and anxiety about negative outcomes can lead to a higher probability of those outcomes occurring. Conversely, cultivating a positive mindset and envisioning positive outcomes enhances the chances of realizing those outcomes.
Asher-Smith suggests a practical exercise to cultivate a positive mindset: whenever a negative thought or self-critique enters the mind, replace it with five positive or constructive thoughts. This practice helps shift the focus from negativity to positivity, creating a more optimistic and productive mindset.
Damien Walter, the podcast co-host, emphasizes the importance of self-appreciation and acknowledging the positive aspects of life. Research conducted by Dr. John Gottman at the University of Washington revealed that successful relationships often involve partners who express appreciation for each other. Walter suggests that individuals should extend this practice of appreciation to themselves before attempting to appreciate others.
The podcast also delves into the impact of the podcast on its audience. The hosts express their delight in receiving feedback from numerous individuals who have found value in the podcast and have experienced positive changes in their lives as a result. [02:10.480 -> 02:13.440] for another Bite Size, short, sharp episode
[02:13.440 -> 02:15.360] of the High Performance Podcast.
[02:15.360 -> 02:17.180] This is just gonna be a few minutes long,
[02:17.180 -> 02:19.880] so just give us your time for three or four minutes
[02:19.880 -> 02:22.320] and allow the lessons from someone else's life
[02:22.320 -> 02:25.480] to impact, uplift, and help yours.
[02:25.480 -> 02:27.240] Thank you so much to Lotus Cars
[02:27.240 -> 02:29.120] for being part of the High Performance Podcast.
[02:29.120 -> 02:30.920] Thanks so much to all of you for listening
[02:30.920 -> 02:32.380] and supporting the pod.
[02:32.380 -> 02:33.480] Let's get straight to it
[02:33.480 -> 02:36.880] because this lady was an absolute inspiration.
[02:36.880 -> 02:40.000] She's achieved so much, and she'd be the first to admit
[02:40.000 -> 02:43.040] she's achieved so much with the right mindset.
[02:43.040 -> 02:45.580] This is a short snippet from the episode
[02:45.580 -> 02:48.040] with the brilliant Dina Asher-Smith.
[02:50.640 -> 02:51.960] When you're on the start line, Dina,
[02:51.960 -> 02:55.100] do you have total belief that the next 10 seconds
[02:55.100 -> 02:58.060] is gonna go well, regardless of injuries
[02:58.060 -> 02:59.040] and other bits and pieces?
[02:59.040 -> 03:02.480] Because I'm a big believer in what's the point
[03:02.480 -> 03:03.960] in thinking it's not gonna go well?
[03:03.960 -> 03:04.880] 100%.
[03:04.880 -> 03:09.200] That is something that I've been working on, I guess, as well over the past few years as well,
[03:09.200 -> 03:13.280] because sometimes I'll get a bit nervous and I'd like, Oh, what if I don't do this? What if I don't
[03:13.280 -> 03:18.960] do that? And yeah, the more you think about the what is waste the energy, you waste the energy
[03:18.960 -> 03:23.760] and you make it ironically, you make it more likely because it's like a bit like manifestation,
[03:23.760 -> 03:26.800] like, whatever you if you believe
[03:26.800 -> 03:32.640] you're going to do a good start you have a higher chance of doing a good start and yeah well I always
[03:32.640 -> 03:39.360] say if you if you believe you will you might yeah if you believe you won't you probably won't and
[03:39.360 -> 03:43.520] that's the you know at least give yourself a chance right that's basically it yeah when we're
[03:43.520 -> 03:45.480] down anyway why would you do it to yourself?
[03:45.480 -> 03:48.840] Exactly, like there's seven other people in the line that's trying to see me fail, so
[03:48.840 -> 03:49.840] I might as well believe in myself.
[03:49.840 -> 03:50.840] Don't make it eight people against you, right?
[03:50.840 -> 03:57.440] Exactly, I'm the one that's got me. I need to at least believe in myself because I know
[03:57.440 -> 04:02.800] those other girls won't want you to be doing well, so yeah.
[04:02.800 -> 04:06.360] Right Damien, here's the thing, okay, Dina is one of the most talented
[04:06.360 -> 04:09.800] athletes on the planet right now, so people might listen to that and think
[04:09.800 -> 04:13.320] well of course she can be positive and she can have great manifestations about
[04:13.320 -> 04:15.740] wonderful things happening to her because she's talented and she's
[04:15.740 -> 04:19.160] brilliant and everyone loves her. What if people are listening to this and they're
[04:19.160 -> 04:22.200] struggling for positivity, they're struggling to see the way forwards, how
[04:22.200 -> 04:26.320] do they start to manifest good stuff?
[04:26.320 -> 04:28.720] Start looking in the direction you want to travel, Jake.
[04:28.720 -> 04:31.960] I think that if you think about when you're going to crash
[04:31.960 -> 04:34.960] your car into a wall, your instinct is you stare straight
[04:34.960 -> 04:36.600] at the wall that you're about to crash into.
[04:36.600 -> 04:40.080] Whereas when they teach racing drivers how to avoid a crash,
[04:40.080 -> 04:42.300] to get them to look back on the track,
[04:42.300 -> 05:06.240] look in the direction they want to travel rather than where it looks inevitably that they're going to reach. And Dina's point was the same thing. i gael iddyn nhw edrych yn ôl ar y trafod, edrych ym mhob ddiwygio y byddent am ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn edrych yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r lle y byddent yn ymwneud â'r sgript y byddent yn ymwneud â'r sgript y byddent yn ymwneud â'r sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn ymwneud ag y sgript y byddent yn you give yourself a better chance of moving in that more positive direction. And I know that when we talk about manifestation
[05:06.240 -> 05:07.760] and positive thinking and believing
[05:07.760 -> 05:09.260] good things are gonna happen,
[05:09.260 -> 05:11.440] of course, there are the naysayers,
[05:11.440 -> 05:12.920] there are the people who listen to this and go,
[05:12.920 -> 05:14.960] oh, shut up, you know, it's all about action,
[05:14.960 -> 05:17.560] it's all right for you, your life's great,
[05:17.560 -> 05:19.460] so of course you can think good things.
[05:19.460 -> 05:23.160] I can't drive home to people listening to this, Damien,
[05:23.160 -> 05:26.160] the importance of believing good stuff is going to happen
[05:26.160 -> 05:31.060] I know because I've been there that when you're focusing on the bad or you're anxious about the negative
[05:31.400 -> 05:36.000] For some reason it comes and finds you when you just believe that things are going to be okay
[05:36.560 -> 05:40.240] It's amazing how much more often they are and I know that it's not foolproof
[05:40.440 -> 05:48.400] Sometimes you can be the most positive person in the room and the stuff that you don't want will still come to your door. But I don't see, as we
[05:48.400 -> 05:55.160] spoke about with Dina, I don't see one single minute minuscule positive to
[05:55.160 -> 06:01.360] thinking negative. There just can't be one. Exactly, I think a hundred percent
[06:01.360 -> 06:04.280] negative belief is pretty much guaranteed to give you a hundred percent
[06:04.280 -> 06:06.000] negative results. A hundred percent positive belief at least gives you the Iawn, rwy'n credu bod 100% o'r credwadau'n negatif yn ymwneud â rhoi 100% o'r cyfrifoldebau negatif i chi.
[06:06.000 -> 06:13.000] Mae 100% o'r credwadau'n positif yn ymwneud â rhoi'r cyfle i chi yw efallai y byddai rhywbeth da sy'n dilyn fel cyfnod o hynny.
[06:13.000 -> 06:25.400] Felly mae'n debyg, pam byddwch chi eisiau rhoi cyfrifoldebau'n negatif o'ch meddwl, pan fyddai hynny'r un peth rydych chi'n ei gynhyrchu, rydych chi'n cael effaith dros. you do control, you do have influence over. And it does take practice and effort, by the way.
[06:25.400 -> 06:27.360] I mean, I started this sort of journey
[06:27.360 -> 06:30.280] towards positive manifestations a while back.
[06:30.280 -> 06:31.640] And the way that it worked for me
[06:31.640 -> 06:34.840] was that every time a negative thought came into my head,
[06:34.840 -> 06:36.560] or I was critical of myself,
[06:36.560 -> 06:37.760] and I'm not just talking about,
[06:37.760 -> 06:39.000] like, is a bad thing gonna happen?
[06:39.000 -> 06:42.320] It's even down to not thinking constructively
[06:42.320 -> 06:43.240] about other people, you know,
[06:43.240 -> 06:49.600] when I start to sort of think ill of others, or, or you know any sort of negativity that I'm putting out there
[06:49.600 -> 06:52.960] as soon as that started what I did was I said right when that happens I'm gonna
[06:52.960 -> 06:57.120] replace it with five positive thoughts or five good thoughts and before you
[06:57.120 -> 07:01.040] know it you don't even think about the negative stuff your whole day is just
[07:01.040 -> 07:04.760] filled with the positive and because you're positive, positive people want to
[07:04.760 -> 07:05.940] hang around with you, those sort of negative n the positive. And because you're positive, positive people want to hang around with you.
[07:05.940 -> 07:07.860] Those sort of negative naysayers find
[07:07.860 -> 07:09.140] that you're not the kind of person for them
[07:09.140 -> 07:11.380] because you don't fill their negative cup up.
[07:11.380 -> 07:14.380] And your whole world, your whole outlook changes.
[07:14.380 -> 07:17.380] And it is a really, a really powerful exercise.
[07:17.380 -> 07:19.260] So every time something negative comes,
[07:19.260 -> 07:21.060] five positive things should replace it.
[07:21.060 -> 07:22.020] What do you think?
[07:22.020 -> 07:23.820] I think it's a brilliant idea, Jake.
[07:23.820 -> 07:45.600] I think it's just the attitude of gratitude, just taking the time just to appreciate what you do have, y byddai'r pethau'n ei gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu gael eu yna mae yna ymchwil ar hyn o ran unigol yn ymwneud â Dr John Gottman ym Mhrifysgol Washington
[07:45.600 -> 08:06.720] sy'n edrych ar gydrwyddiadau gyda'r cyflwynoedd ac yr hyn yr oedd yn ei ddod o'i gael yw bod y gydrwyddiadau gyda'r gynhyrchau mae cymhwysedd o ffyrdd o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o'r cyfnod o gwirionedd. Ac rwy'n credu ein bod yn rhaid dechrau gwneud hynny i'n hunain
[08:06.720 -> 08:09.280] cyn i ni gynnal ymchwil i unrhyw un arall.
[08:09.280 -> 08:10.640] Mae'n hollol ddiddorol.

[08:33.080 -> 08:35.920] Damien, is that too trite to say?
[08:35.920 -> 08:36.920] No, I don't think it is.
[08:36.920 -> 08:38.240] I think we're doing our best to do it,
