[00:46.960 -> 00:52.880] special. Here's today's bite-sized episode of the High Performance Podcast. I stumbled across my personal purpose and it was looking back now, I'm just so grateful
[00:52.880 -> 00:59.520] that I had that vision, that purpose. And that came about when I walked off the field
[00:59.520 -> 01:08.160] in 2003 after playing my first test for the All Blacks. So if I rewind back to a five-year-old Dan Carter,
[01:08.880 -> 01:11.160] it was the inaugural Rugby World Cup.
[01:11.160 -> 01:14.380] It was here in New Zealand, co-hosted with Australia.
[01:15.320 -> 01:18.120] In one of the first games, the All Blacks played Italy.
[01:18.120 -> 01:20.840] And from one of the kickoffs, John Kirwan got the ball.
[01:20.840 -> 01:24.360] He beat 11 players to score this incredible try.
[01:24.360 -> 01:26.000] It was one of the most amazing tries.
[01:26.000 -> 01:28.000] As a little five-year-old kid, I'm like, man, he's my hero.
[01:28.000 -> 01:32.000] So I went straight outside and I was pretending to score tries like John Kirwan.
[01:32.000 -> 01:35.000] Now, the All Blacks went on to win that World Cup.
[01:35.000 -> 01:39.000] And I remember watching David Kirk, who was captain in that game,
[01:39.000 -> 01:42.000] holding the William W. Ellis Cup above his head.
[01:42.000 -> 01:45.240] And as a five-year-old, I don't remember a lot
[01:45.240 -> 01:46.760] from when I was five years old, to be honest,
[01:46.760 -> 01:49.120] but I remember that moment of going,
[01:49.120 -> 01:50.760] I want to be an All Black.
[01:50.760 -> 01:51.800] This is my dream.
[01:52.760 -> 01:54.360] Now, I never actually thought it would happen.
[01:54.360 -> 01:57.280] I grew up in a little town of only 700 people.
[01:57.280 -> 02:00.960] So in my opinion, as a five-year-old, I thought,
[02:02.200 -> 02:07.000] All Blacks aren't supposed to come from these little villages of only 700 people.
[02:07.000 -> 02:16.000] So anyway, I love rugby so much. I did it because it was fun, all my mates were doing it, I was okay at it, I was never the best.
[02:16.000 -> 02:26.680] And then all of a sudden, through hard work and a lot of sacrifice, I became an All Black. Played my debut against Wales in 2003.
[02:27.720 -> 02:30.480] And all of a sudden my dream had become a reality.
[02:30.480 -> 02:35.480] And I walked off that field and I was like, is that it?
[02:35.520 -> 02:37.920] Man, that was the most incredible feeling,
[02:37.920 -> 02:40.680] but I don't want this feeling to ever end.
[02:40.680 -> 02:42.640] Like I don't want to be just another All Black
[02:42.640 -> 02:44.640] where I play three or four games.
[02:44.640 -> 02:45.200] I don't want to be an another all black where I play three or four games I don't want to be
[02:45.200 -> 02:51.840] an all black that plays one season I want to be an all black great and and here I was thinking this
[02:51.840 -> 02:56.720] after playing 80 minutes like why should I be thinking that I want to be an all black great
[02:56.720 -> 03:03.600] but once again similar to that vision that the all blacks had in 2011 it was a vision that I had
[03:03.600 -> 03:25.120] and I was like well what does an all black great look like what does he do well one he's got to 2011, iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi iwi i universitiau i ahoi i meinei, so that's what an All Black Great looks like.
[03:25.120 -> 03:29.280] An All Black Great, you can't be an All Black Great after four or five years. You have to have
[03:29.280 -> 03:35.520] a career over 10 years, so you need to evolve as a player. You can't just be this one-dimensional
[03:35.520 -> 03:40.480] player if you're going to be playing with a career over 10 years. So there are a whole lot of things
[03:40.480 -> 04:46.000] that was really driving me from that moment. So every day I got out of bed, so what does an All o kaitiwa koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou koutou k kareerea mua i mei 2015, etoori, kia te reo Māori, kia te reo and he talks a lot about that, actually looking back at where you've come from to know where you're
[04:46.000 -> 04:52.640] going. So as an All Black, as soon as you come into the environment, you soon learn this incredible
[04:52.640 -> 04:59.840] history. So your one job while you're an All Black is to add to the legacy. You're just a custodian
[04:59.840 -> 05:06.800] of the All Black jersey, so when you've finished your role, you have to leave it in a better place than you got before it.
[05:06.800 -> 05:09.000] So that was my mission in the all blacks
[05:09.000 -> 05:10.280] is to when I do finish,
[05:10.280 -> 05:12.280] I want to add to the legacy.
[05:12.280 -> 05:14.480] And I felt like I was able to do that.
[05:14.480 -> 05:15.940] And there was some great synergies
[05:15.940 -> 05:18.680] between my personal vision of wanting to be a great all black
[05:18.680 -> 05:23.120] and I guess the mission of every all black
[05:23.120 -> 05:24.680] of trying to add to the legacy.
