In this episode, Sean Dyche, the former manager of Burnley, discusses the transferable skills he has gained from football management that can be applied to various aspects of life. He highlights the importance of culture alignment, environment creation, and understanding people.
Dyche emphasizes that culture alignment is crucial for any organization. He believes that setting keywords and buzzwords is not enough; companies need to find ways to bring culture to life and align people's beliefs with it. He draws parallels between football and business, stating that the crossover of life extends beyond tactics and formations.
Dyche also discusses the significance of creating a positive environment. He notes that many companies, including Google, have open-minded and freelance-like work environments that attract top talent. He questions how structure and lack of structure can coexist in such environments and explores how different industries may require different levels of structure.
Finally, Dyche stresses the importance of understanding people. He explains that football can be a stressful environment due to the pressure from millions of people, especially for young players. He emphasizes the need for empathy and understanding in leadership positions and encourages leaders to consider the perspectives of others.
Overall, Dyche provides valuable insights into the transferable skills and lessons that can be learned from football management, emphasizing the importance of culture alignment, environment creation, and understanding people in achieving success in various fields.

[02:19.380 -> 02:26.080] performance podcast so who plays the part for you then Sean of being the voice on your
[02:26.080 -> 02:30.040] shoulder that like the voice in your ear that sort of keeps you? You've got your
[02:30.040 -> 02:33.640] own self-talk quite obviously and I've plenty of that, I've sat on the M6 for half my
[02:33.640 -> 02:36.920] life. Yeah. So there's plenty of that, you've got your staff of course and
[02:36.920 -> 02:40.240] especially if you've got trusted staff you know I say we have an agreement tell
[02:40.240 -> 02:43.960] me don't don't ever talk about that just tell me good news or bad news just tell
[02:43.960 -> 02:48.640] me and so you've got that you've got outside family in a different way they
[02:48.640 -> 02:52.040] more of a relax it's not that I absorb my missus don't know about football
[02:52.040 -> 02:55.080] you know I bothered about which she can absorb in a different way she knows when
[02:55.080 -> 02:58.040] to take my mind away from it and go right we're going out with the kids she
[02:58.040 -> 03:01.480] knows I don't really want sympathy don't really like that yeah I'm bit of
[03:01.480 -> 03:08.440] empathy now and again a bit of like dad just needs an hour you know perspective outside the game from a massive yeah I mean I use
[03:08.440 -> 03:12.880] that a lot you know because football can be really intense and it can be really
[03:12.880 -> 03:16.980] overbearing at times I use that a lot you know I haven't lost we want to come
[03:16.980 -> 03:20.280] out what for for example I got the sack there and I said after that they go you
[03:20.280 -> 03:23.400] know you must be this must be that I said well I says people a lot worse off
[03:23.400 -> 03:26.360] than me both career-wise and financially you get the sack you know
[03:26.360 -> 03:29.640] and they're in real trouble I'm not in trouble so I said no no I'm not gonna
[03:29.640 -> 03:33.640] start crying in you know it happens it's one of the challenges of the job that
[03:33.640 -> 03:38.600] I'm in outside of the world of football I know there's a lot people a lot worse
[03:38.600 -> 03:43.040] off than me so if my day comes which inevitably will do either you leave for
[03:43.040 -> 03:46.000] good reasons you're on somewhere else or you leave for bad reasons you get the sack trust me I'll be alright I'm not I'm not gonna start crying over it so yn ystod y diwrnod hwnnw, a bydd yn ymwneud â'i wneud. Yn ystod y diwrnod hwnnw, yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau da, yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:46.000 -> 03:48.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:48.000 -> 03:50.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:50.000 -> 03:52.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:52.000 -> 03:54.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:54.000 -> 03:56.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:56.000 -> 03:58.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[03:58.000 -> 04:00.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[04:00.000 -> 04:02.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[04:02.000 -> 04:04.000] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau,
[04:04.000 -> 04:07.600] yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddau, yw'n mynd i le i rai sylwadau ddifrifol ydych chi'n meddwl y byddai nhw allan o'r byd ffotbol, oherwydd y byddai'n ymwneud â chwarae gwahanol neu rhai o'r gwasanaethau y byddwch wedi mynd i siarad â nhw?
[04:07.600 -> 04:29.680] Wel, maen nhw'n deimlo eu bod yn meddwl y gwasanaeth rydw i wedi sôn arno, ac rydw i'n gwneud llawer o hynny ar gyfer y cyfrifiad, mewn gwirionedd. Felly pan dwi'n ei wneud, mae'n mynd i'r cyfrifiad, y cyfrifiad gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd-gyd- voice you're listening to, different faces you look at, the feedback is different from the business world of course and I think it's all part of you know, you continue to improve. When you're talking
[04:29.680 -> 04:37.120] culture, very transferable. Most businesses I've spoken to really intrigued by how you align the
[04:37.120 -> 04:41.040] culture. They've all got a good understanding of setting it and all the keywords and the buzzwords
[04:41.040 -> 04:47.280] and different ways of setting it but how do you actually bring it to life? How do you actually align people to believe in it?
[04:47.280 -> 04:49.400] They're very interested in that.
[04:49.400 -> 04:50.760] Because if you think about it as a crossover,
[04:50.760 -> 04:52.360] that's not relevant like we're talking about now,
[04:52.360 -> 04:55.940] it's not 442 or 433, it's just a crossover of life.
[04:55.940 -> 04:56.920] They're very interested in that.
[04:56.920 -> 04:59.740] Equally, I'm interested in how they do it.
[04:59.740 -> 05:00.960] So that's always one.
[05:00.960 -> 05:02.780] Environment's very similar, but most companies,
[05:02.780 -> 05:04.480] good companies, have got a good environment.
[05:04.480 -> 05:08.160] You know, the obvious ones, people like talk about the open-mindedness of Google,
[05:08.160 -> 05:12.720] say, you know, they've got this amazing way of working, it's all very freelance-ish feeling,
[05:12.720 -> 05:16.240] and yet you've got some of the top gurus in the world working there.
[05:16.240 -> 05:19.720] You know, how do you align that when at first they're going, oh, you're kidding me, there's
[05:19.720 -> 05:20.720] no structure to this.
[05:20.720 -> 05:23.680] But in that world, lack of structure works.
[05:23.680 -> 05:26.880] If you might be an accountancy, you might need structure, you know, so therefore it's, Ond ym maes hwn, mae angen y strydau'n gweithio. Os ydych chi'n athrof, byddwch chi'n angen y strydau.
[05:26.880 -> 05:29.160] Felly dyna'r peth.
[05:29.160 -> 05:32.200] Mae llawer o'r peth unig yn dod allan.
[05:32.200 -> 05:34.960] Mae llawer o'r cymdeithasau yn gofyn i mi sut y gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:34.960 -> 05:35.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:35.960 -> 05:36.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:36.960 -> 05:37.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:37.960 -> 05:38.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:38.960 -> 05:39.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:39.960 -> 05:40.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:40.960 -> 05:41.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:41.960 -> 05:42.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:42.960 -> 05:43.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:43.960 -> 05:44.960] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl.
[05:44.960 -> 05:46.000] Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl. Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl. Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl. Gadewch chi'n deall y bobl. Gadewch chi'n deesfo iawn. Mae'r cymdeithasau, ond mae'n stres yn y blynyddoedd. Gall y ffotbol fod yn stres allanol.
[05:46.000 -> 05:48.000] Yn fawr, mae'n stres ar y pwynt o
[05:48.000 -> 05:50.000] miliwnau o bobl.
[05:50.000 -> 05:52.000] Pan fyddwch chi'n 19 oed.
[05:52.000 -> 05:54.000] Ie, ac yn Twitter ac yna.
[05:54.000 -> 05:56.000] Maen nhw'n y pethau'n bwysig.
[05:56.000 -> 05:58.000] Ond dwi'n hoffi,
[05:58.000 -> 06:00.000] dwi'n rhoi fy nghyfrid,
[06:00.000 -> 06:02.000] pan fyddant yn rhoi'r adroddiad,
[06:02.000 -> 06:04.000] dwi'n gobeithio dyna'r pwynt.
[06:04.000 -> 06:06.920] Dwi'n gobeithio dyna'r pwynt. Dwi'n gobeithio dyna'r pwynt. they feedback that's the point of say oh we have this you know question answer go sometimes I ask them I go you must have some is what what what do you think
