Notes

Back in Series 5 we were extremely fortunate to spend an afternoon with the incredible Adam Peaty.

Adam wrote his name into the history books once again as he powered to 100m breaststroke gold in Tokyo to become the first British swimmer to defend an Olympic title.

In the full episode we spoke about his intense focus on mental skills to allow his physical gifts to flourish. His use of visualising the waiting room before entering the arena, his refusal to engage in blame and his approach to developing bulletproof self-belief are all techniques we can apply in our world.

In this featured clip Adam speaks about the importance of balance in your life to be able to perform at your best.

Summary

**Navigating Balance for Optimal Performance: Insights from Adam Peaty**

In this bite-sized episode from the High Performance Podcast, Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty emphasizes the significance of maintaining balance in life to excel in performance. Peaty, known for his exceptional mental skills and focus, shares his approach to achieving peak performance through a balanced lifestyle.

**Key Takeaways:**

1. **The Power of Disengaging:** Peaty highlights the importance of disconnecting from intense focus on performance and allowing oneself to relax and unwind. He practices this by engaging in activities that take his mind off swimming, such as listening to music or watching movies.

2. **Avoiding Overthinking:** Peaty emphasizes the detrimental effects of overthinking, particularly in high-pressure situations. He believes that excessive mental exertion can drain energy and hinder performance. Instead, he advocates for a relaxed and composed approach.

3. **The Art of Detaching:** Peaty demonstrates the ability to detach from the intensity of competition. After races, he debriefs and then quickly shifts his focus to other activities, allowing him to maintain composure and mental well-being.

4. **Balance as a Key Ingredient:** Peaty underscores the crucial role of balance in achieving exceptional performance. He believes that finding a harmonious equilibrium between intense focus and relaxation is essential for sustained success.

5. **Recognizing Tension and Relaxation:** Peaty's coach, Mel, plays a vital role in identifying when Peaty's swimming stroke becomes tense. Peaty acknowledges that maintaining a relaxed state is crucial for efficient energy utilization and optimal performance.

**Conclusion:**

Adam Peaty's insights into the importance of balance offer valuable lessons for anyone seeking to achieve peak performance in their respective fields. By embracing relaxation, avoiding overthinking, and maintaining a harmonious equilibrium between focus and leisure, individuals can optimize their performance and enhance their overall well-being.

[00:00.000 -> 00:05.200] As a person with a very deep voice, I'm hired all the time for advertising campaigns.
[00:05.200 -> 00:10.880] But a deep voice doesn't sell B2B, and advertising on the wrong platform doesn't sell B2B either.
[00:10.880 -> 00:14.720] That's why if you're a B2B marketer, you should use LinkedIn ads.
[00:14.720 -> 00:19.920] LinkedIn has the targeting capabilities to help you reach the world's largest professional audience.
[00:19.920 -> 00:24.080] That's right, over 70 million decision makers all in one place.

[00:36.200 -> 00:41.360] So does that mean you should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring me, the man with the deepest
[00:41.360 -> 00:42.840] voice in the world?
[00:42.840 -> 00:44.960] Yes, yes it does.
[00:44.960 -> 00:47.000] Get started today and see why LinkedIn
[00:47.000 -> 00:49.440] is the place to be, to be.

[02:37.360 -> 02:42.740] for details this is a bite-sized episode of high performance our gift to you for
[02:42.740 -> 02:50.800] free every single week this is the podcast that turns the lived experiences of the planet's highest performers into your life lessons.
[02:50.800 -> 02:54.500] And on these short bite-sized episodes, we just take a look back in the archives.
[02:54.500 -> 03:00.300] We play you a clip from a guest who's joined us previously on the podcast and we just get you to think once more
[03:00.300 -> 03:04.800] about the things that you've learned from them, the lessons that they had for you and perhaps
[03:04.800 -> 03:08.480] the things that really hit home at the time, but maybe with the busyness of
[03:08.480 -> 03:14.120] life you've just forgotten over the past couple of years. So enjoy this bite-sized episode
[03:14.120 -> 03:17.440] from the High Performance Podcast.
[03:17.440 -> 03:21.840] I think I know when to switch on and know when to switch off. I'm very good at being
[03:21.840 -> 03:25.200] chilled, like too good at being chilled.
[03:30.880 -> 03:37.920] But I think that's just part and parcel of who I am. I've always found it very easy to turn off from what I do. And I think overthinking for a lot of people, overthinking a scenario for no reason
[03:37.920 -> 03:43.920] costs them so much energy. So I think where I've been good is I've always been able to exit the
[03:43.920 -> 03:45.520] pool, turn on some music
[03:45.520 -> 03:48.960] and not even think about swimming, not even think about racing.
[03:48.960 -> 03:50.320] And it's the exact same at the Olympics.
[03:50.320 -> 03:55.360] I'll debrief at the pool after my first in the heats, debrief after the semis and enjoy
[03:55.360 -> 03:56.360] the final.
[03:56.360 -> 03:59.520] But other than that, it's all about obviously the preparation, the process to know how I
[03:59.520 -> 04:00.520] get that performance.
[04:00.520 -> 04:07.800] But I can turn on the Mac or I can turn on the iPad and watch, you know, in between is there something like that, you know, in between a semi-final
[04:07.800 -> 04:10.400] and a final and just completely take myself away from that.
[04:10.800 -> 04:12.400] And as you said, I completely agree.
[04:12.400 -> 04:14.000] I think it is all about balance, isn't it?
[04:14.000 -> 04:18.600] It's, I think if you're going to achieve something that no one can even get near
[04:18.600 -> 04:21.800] or something that, you know, is the best in the world in that moment,
[04:22.400 -> 04:27.280] there's got to be something that is going to give you that complete chilled approach and composure.
[04:27.280 -> 04:28.640] And that's what me and Mel always say.
[04:28.640 -> 04:31.440] We know when the stroke is, you know, tired.
[04:31.440 -> 04:34.800] We know when it's not where it's meant to be, but the hardest thing is
[04:35.600 -> 04:37.440] knowing when it's not tense and tense.
[04:37.560 -> 04:42.360] And it's like, for me, if I'm not chilled and she knows that if I'm not chilled,
[04:42.440 -> 04:46.640] my stroke becomes tense and that costs you two times as much energy to get down to the first 50
[04:46.640 -> 04:49.000] than it does normally.
[04:49.000 -> 04:51.520] When I'm at my best, again, it comes back to the flow state
[04:51.520 -> 04:53.140] and having that balance.
