This week’s bitesize brilliance is from rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield.
We chatted about the importance of soft stuff: the ability to show our emotions, let people know we care and the power of friendship. This is the intangible stuff that produces the hard currency of silverware.
"When it is all over, you don't remember games as well as the friendships and relationships you share."
In 2020 Kevin set the challenge to run 7 marathons in 7 days hoping to raise £77,777 in honour of his best Rob Burrow, who wore the No 7 shirt. He raised more than £2.5 million to help his friend’s family and the fight against MND.

In this episode, the importance of embracing emotions, demonstrating care, and the power of friendship in achieving success is discussed. The guest, Kevin Sinfield, emphasizes that the intangible aspects of life, such as relationships and emotional connections, ultimately contribute to tangible achievements.
Sinfield's remarkable act of running seven marathons in seven days to raise funds for his friend Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), is highlighted. This act of kindness and determination not only raised over £2.5 million but also brought attention to the fight against MND.
The episode delves into the concept of comparison and how it can hinder happiness. The idea that constantly comparing oneself to others on social media can lead to dissatisfaction and a distorted view of reality is discussed. The importance of focusing on one's own journey and celebrating individual achievements is emphasized.
The conversation also touches upon the significance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals who understand one's aspirations and dreams. These individuals can provide valuable insights and encouragement during challenging times.
Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of emotional well-being, meaningful relationships, and self-acceptance in achieving a high-performance life. It encourages listeners to focus on their own paths, embrace challenges, and find joy in the journey.
[00:00.000 -> 00:05.200] As a person with a very deep voice, I'm hired all the time for advertising campaigns.
[00:05.200 -> 00:10.880] But a deep voice doesn't sell B2B, and advertising on the wrong platform doesn't sell B2B either.
[00:10.880 -> 00:14.720] That's why if you're a B2B marketer, you should use LinkedIn ads.
[00:14.720 -> 00:19.920] LinkedIn has the targeting capabilities to help you reach the world's largest professional audience.
[00:19.920 -> 00:24.080] That's right, over 70 million decision makers all in one place.
[00:24.080 -> 00:26.840] All the bigwigs and mediumwigs.
[00:26.840 -> 00:29.520] Also smallwigs who are on the path to becoming bigwigs.
[00:29.520 -> 00:31.760] Okay, that's enough about wigs.
[00:31.760 -> 00:36.200] LinkedIn ads allows you to focus on getting your B2B message to the right people.
[00:36.200 -> 00:41.360] So does that mean you should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring me, the man with the deepest
[00:41.360 -> 00:42.840] voice in the world?
[00:42.840 -> 00:44.960] Yes, yes it does.
[00:44.960 -> 00:47.000] Get started today and see why LinkedIn
[00:47.000 -> 00:49.440] is the place to be, to be.
[00:49.440 -> 00:52.720] We'll even give you a $100 credit on your next campaign.
[00:52.720 -> 00:55.880] Go to linkedin.com slash results to claim your credit.
[00:55.880 -> 00:58.180] That's linkedin.com slash results.
[00:58.180 -> 00:59.560] Terms and conditions apply.
[01:02.560 -> 01:04.720] On our podcast, we love to highlight businesses
[01:04.720 -> 01:06.540] that are doing things a better way so you
[01:06.540 -> 01:11.600] can live a better life and that's why when I found Mint Mobile I had to share.
[01:11.600 -> 01:16.280] So Mint Mobile ditched retail stores and all those overhead costs and instead sells their
[01:16.280 -> 01:19.680] phone plans online and passes those savings to you.
[01:19.680 -> 01:23.880] And for a limited time they're passing on even more savings with a new customer offer
[01:23.880 -> 01:29.880] that cuts all Mint Mobile plans to $15 a month when you purchase a 3 month plan.
[01:29.880 -> 01:36.280] That's unlimited talk, text and data for $15 a month.
[01:36.280 -> 01:41.120] And by the way, the quality of Mint Mobile's wireless service in comparison to providers
[01:41.120 -> 01:44.040] that we've worked with before is incredible.
[01:44.040 -> 01:46.320] Mint Mobile is here to rescue you
[01:46.320 -> 01:49.200] with premium wireless plans for 15 bucks a month.
[01:49.200 -> 01:51.960] So say goodbye to your overpriced wireless plans,
[01:51.960 -> 01:53.680] those jaw-dropping monthly bills,
[01:53.680 -> 01:55.600] those unexpected overages,
[01:55.600 -> 01:58.120] because all the plans come with unlimited talk and text
[01:58.120 -> 01:59.520] and high-speed data
[01:59.520 -> 02:02.680] delivered on the nation's largest 5G network.
[02:02.680 -> 02:05.720] Use your own phone with any Mint Mobile plan, bring your
[02:05.720 -> 02:08.820] phone number along with all your existing contacts.
[02:08.820 -> 02:13.440] So ditch overpriced wireless with Mint Mobile's limited time deal and get premium wireless
[02:13.440 -> 02:19.400] service for just $15 a month. To get this new customer offer and your new 3 month unlimited
[02:19.400 -> 02:25.480] wireless plan for just $15 a month, go to mintmobile.com.hpp. That's mintmobile.com slash HPP that's mint

[02:31.940 -> 02:37.360] dot-com slash HPP additional taxes fees and restrictions apply see mint mobile
[02:37.360 -> 02:41.040] for details hi there you're listening to a bite-sized episode of the high
[02:41.040 -> 02:45.840] performance podcast where we speak to leading artists, entrepreneurs,
[02:45.840 -> 02:50.320] actors, activists about the life they've lived, the things they've done, hopefully, so they
[02:50.320 -> 02:55.560] can share some words of wisdom that improve your life. Usually the episodes are about
[02:55.560 -> 02:59.420] an hour long. We've just completed our fifth series. If you want to go back, you can listen
[02:59.420 -> 03:04.560] to all five series, starting with Rio Ferdinand, episode one, series one. But one of the guests
[03:04.560 -> 03:07.420] who joined us along the way was former rugby
[03:07.420 -> 03:10.500] league player Kevin Sinfield, a man who did so much on the rugby
[03:10.500 -> 03:14.300] field, but also a man who has done so much off the field to
[03:14.300 -> 03:17.540] inspire people, particularly when he raised tens of thousands
[03:17.540 -> 03:21.180] of pounds in 2020 for his good friend, Rob Burrow.
[03:21.860 -> 03:25.800] Here's what he had to say to us when we spoke to him about the importance
[03:25.800 -> 03:27.280] of chasing happiness.
[03:27.280 -> 03:29.440] Rob Burrow
[03:29.440 -> 03:35.000] I finished playing and you start a new role. I studied throughout my career and there's
[03:35.000 -> 03:41.640] nothing quite gives you the satisfaction that playing gave me. It's different. So trying
[03:41.640 -> 03:45.900] to find ways of being able to feel good about yourself,
[03:46.800 -> 03:50.000] trying to find ways to give you the moment of Andy Difference
[03:50.000 -> 03:53.700] on the roof in Shawshank when he feels free and his mates have had a couple of beers,
[03:53.700 -> 03:56.300] trying to find those moments are really difficult.
[03:56.300 -> 03:57.300] They're really difficult.
[03:57.300 -> 04:02.800] And I think what distorts people's views are,
[04:03.800 -> 04:06.160] how everybody's putting like like we mentioned social media before
[04:06.160 -> 04:10.800] everybody's telling you how well they're doing how good the life is all on social media but you
[04:10.800 -> 04:14.560] won't pick that a little bit and you understand that actually you know at times you have to
[04:14.560 -> 04:19.200] struggle a little bit you have to go through some rough rough times you have to persevere
[04:19.200 -> 04:25.040] with getting where you where you'd like to be now some Some people don't know where that is, I understand that.
[04:25.040 -> 04:27.200] But set off somewhere, don't stand still,
[04:27.200 -> 04:28.980] set off in a direction,
[04:28.980 -> 04:31.420] set off with some integrity and some honesty
[04:31.420 -> 04:33.340] and you'll find some answers, you'll get there,
[04:33.340 -> 04:34.180] you'll get where you need to be.
[04:34.180 -> 04:36.260] And if you don't, change path.
[04:36.260 -> 04:39.340] I suppose the reality is, Damien, is hard, as he says,
[04:39.340 -> 04:42.240] it is hard to find the joy.
[04:42.240 -> 04:43.880] So how do we do it?
[04:43.880 -> 05:07.440] We can't just, I don't want to sit on this podcast and tell people a life's one constant slog of chasing success there has to be happiness in there doesn't there yeah it does and I think a key element of what Kevin describes there is get out a comparison culture stop looking at what others are doing and measuring it in terms of what matters to you what you're passionate about yourself I think we've just come out of the Olympics and it was a'i medru o ran beth sy'n bwysig i chi, beth rydych chi'n fwyaffus am eich hun. Rwy'n credu ein bod ni wedi dod allan o'r
[05:07.440 -> 05:13.280] Cymdeithasol a'r fyddai wedi'i astudio yn ychydig mlynedd yn ôl y Cymdeithasol Cymru yn 2000,
[05:13.280 -> 05:18.880] lle edrychai ar lefelau hapus o gampion medal a'r hyn y maen nhw'n ei ddod o'n ymwneud â'r gampion medal mwyaf hapus
[05:18.880 -> 05:24.080] oedd y golau a'r medallistiaeth bron. Ac mae ffactor pwysig ar ôl hynny,
[05:24.080 -> 05:28.960] y medallistiaeth golau, oherwydd roedden nhw'n cyrraedd yr hyn y byddent am ei eisiau. Ond y rheswm y byddai'r meddalwyr bron yn
[05:28.960 -> 05:33.680] hapusach na'r meddalwyr silfaoedd yw oherwydd roedden nhw'n edrych a dweud, gallais i ddod yn ôl
[05:33.680 -> 05:38.320] ar gyfer gwynebu meddal, er mwyn i'r meddalwyr silfaoedd ymdrechu ag y meddalwyr golau
[05:38.320 -> 05:42.240] a dweud, os byddwn wedi mynd yn fwy anodd, gallais i gael gwaith o golau. Ac rwy'n credu,
[05:42.880 -> 05:49.520] pan fyddwn ni'n deall hynny, bod yn bwysig yn ystod ein hunain ag eraill sydd efallai ei gael mwy, neu efallai eu bod yn cael mwy
[05:49.520 -> 05:53.520] na'r hyn rydyn ni'n ei wneud. Mae'n effeithio ar ein lefelau ein hunain o'n ddiddorol, ac, o'n
[05:53.520 -> 05:58.720] definiad, ar ein hapus. Felly, ddod allan o'r cyflwr hwnnw o ddim yn edrych ar
[05:58.720 -> 06:05.000] cyflwyno'r pobl sy'n cymysgu prodwythau ar y cyfansoddiadau cymdeithasol a'i cymharu ag ein hynny i'n ffyrddau,
[06:05.000 -> 06:12.000] mae'n ffyrdd cyffredinol i'n gilydd i ddod o'n lefelau'n hapus.
[06:12.000 -> 06:19.000] Rwy'n credu bod cyfrifiadau cymdeithasol yn rhaid i ni ddod o'n lefelau'n hapus.
[06:19.000 -> 06:27.800] Dwi ddim yn eisiau clywed trit, ond y ffrase on the podcast often, comparison is the thief of joy, is absolutely correct.
[06:27.800 -> 06:31.400] Every single minute that we spend wishing we had someone else's life is a minute
[06:31.400 -> 06:33.400] that we spend wasting our own.
[06:33.800 -> 06:35.300] And I think it's really important to be clear.
[06:35.300 -> 06:39.100] The one thing I want to say about this, right, is that when you struggle with
[06:39.100 -> 06:43.300] comparing your life to somebody else's, particularly on social media, is that
[06:43.300 -> 06:50.060] you are comparing your behind-the- scenes truth with the lies that exist on their highlights real.
[06:50.760 -> 06:51.660] And we all do it.
[06:51.660 -> 06:54.740] We all go out and have a bad day, take one photo where everything looks great,
[06:54.740 -> 06:59.900] put it up on social media, other people see it and just assume that you had an
[06:59.900 -> 07:01.460] amazing day when you know the truth.
[07:01.460 -> 07:05.140] And I think the other thing which I learned quite recently,
[07:05.140 -> 07:06.560] which I think is really important, right,
[07:06.560 -> 07:09.120] is that let's imagine that it's not someone's highlight
[07:09.120 -> 07:11.360] reel, let's imagine it is just you have a friend
[07:11.360 -> 07:13.600] that lives the perfect life, okay.
[07:13.600 -> 07:17.160] Someone's happiness shouldn't diminish your own.
[07:17.160 -> 07:19.080] If you're listening to this podcast now,
[07:19.080 -> 07:20.760] you are at the start of something great,
[07:20.760 -> 07:22.240] and I know you're at the start of something great
[07:22.240 -> 07:24.200] because you're living your own life,
[07:24.200 -> 07:26.000] and how can it be anything other than great it is
[07:26.000 -> 07:31.120] your life so don't be discouraged by another person's progress there will
[07:31.120 -> 07:36.040] always be people ahead of you but there will always be people behind you looking
[07:36.040 -> 07:41.400] at you believing that you're ahead of where they are and if you just keep on
[07:41.400 -> 07:44.520] wanting to live someone else's life what are you saying about your own life that
[07:44.520 -> 07:46.560] you're not worthy to kind of be you take your own path have your own struggles I Os ydych chi'n mynd i leiaf i byw y byd o'r unigol, beth ydych chi'n dweud am eich bywyd eich hun? Ydych chi ddim yn ddod i fod yn eich hun?
[07:46.560 -> 07:47.720] Ymwneud â'ch fath eich hun?
[07:47.720 -> 07:49.040] Mae gennych eich hefyd yn ymchwilau eich hun?
[07:49.040 -> 07:50.640] Rwy'n credu mai dyna'n pwynt gwych iawn.
[07:50.640 -> 07:53.360] Rwy'n gofyn wrth Kevin
[07:53.360 -> 07:55.200] y byddwn i'n gofyn am un o'n gwestiynau arall
[07:55.200 -> 07:57.240] ar y sifil y gall pobl fynd i'w gwrando i.
[07:57.240 -> 07:58.640] Roedd y Cynulliad Norwich,
[07:58.640 -> 08:00.280] y captain Grant Hanley,
[08:00.280 -> 08:02.560] a oedd yn siarad am ei ddiddorol
[08:02.560 -> 08:04.360] o weld ei cymdeithaswyr
[08:04.360 -> 08:05.760] ddod allan o'r ffyrdd
[08:05.760 -> 08:11.040] ar ôl y stryd o'r gêm ac yn mynd ar y cyfansoddiadau cymdeithasol i weld beth oedd y pobl yn meddwl am eu perfformiad
[08:11.040 -> 08:15.760] pan oedd ei ddweud y byddai'r bobl sy'n gwerthu'n ymdrech i'ch perfformiad
[08:15.760 -> 08:20.080] wedi ymweld â chi yn y ystafell ddrethio, oherwydd rydyn ni'n deall y stryd, y gwaith hawr,
[08:20.080 -> 08:26.960] y gwaith gredeg y rydych chi wedi'i gynhyrchu yn hyn. Ac rwy'n credu, eto, yn edrych ar y rhai rydych chi'n ei ymweld â,
[08:26.960 -> 08:32.720] pa pobl sy'n deall eich ambysiyniau, eich stryd, eich ddreimau, maen nhw'r unau
[08:32.720 -> 08:37.360] y mae angen i chi ystyried, nid ymweld â'ch hunain i'r straenoriaethau.
[08:37.360 -> 08:40.960] Ac rwy'n gwybod bod rhai o bobl yn gallu mynd ar y cyfansoddiadau cymdeithasol, Damien, ac mae rhai o bobl yn gallu edrych ar eu
[08:40.960 -> 08:45.080] ffrindiau yn eu casgliadau hyfryd neu'u cariau gwych, neu ydych chi bob amser yn edrych yn perffaith gyda'u Some people can look at their friends and their lovely houses or their great cars or you're always looking perfect
[08:45.080 -> 08:47.080] with their hair done and feeling great.
[08:47.080 -> 08:49.600] Some people can do that and feel okay,
[08:49.600 -> 08:50.600] but a lot of people can't.
[08:50.600 -> 08:52.400] And I think people have to be really honest with themselves
[08:52.400 -> 08:55.380] and say, right, I can't do comparison
[08:55.380 -> 08:58.240] because for most people, the fastest way to feel unhappy
[08:58.240 -> 09:00.380] is to compare themselves to somebody else.
[09:00.380 -> 09:03.500] So if that is you, don't be distracted by comparison.
[09:03.500 -> 09:05.800] Just know that you're on the right path
[09:06.880 -> 09:08.920] and you're shining in your own way.
[09:08.920 -> 09:09.760] Thanks, mate.
[09:09.760 -> 09:10.600] Thank you, Jake.
[09:10.600 -> 09:11.720] Loved it as always.
[09:11.720 -> 09:12.560] Absolutely.
[09:12.560 -> 09:14.280] Don't forget you can listen to that full episode
