Notes

This week we have an extract from our exclusive members club The High Performance Circle, with former Olympian and business coach, Cath Bishop.

Cath believes that we have come to define winning too narrowly - as a moment in time crossing the line, winning a medal, and at a level set by others rather than ourselves. That 'win at all costs' mentality has seen 'the costs' rise to unacceptable levels.

Cath talks about the need to redefine winning in a way that helps us to explore our potential better and thrive over the long-term, to ensure that crossing the line first or last is connected to something of lasting value. Jake and Damian respond to Cath's excellent keynote speech.

[02:08.400 -> 02:12.160] Hi there, welcome along to a bite-sized episode of the High Performance Podcast.
[02:12.160 -> 02:16.320] Now normally what we do is we share with you a little clip from someone that's
[02:16.320 -> 02:20.280] joined us on the podcast and Damien and myself will talk about it and hopefully
[02:20.280 -> 02:23.200] you'll get something from it but today we're going to do something a little bit
[02:23.200 -> 02:28.120] different. We're going to hear from someone who has joined us on the High Performance Circle.
[02:28.120 -> 02:31.320] Now if you're not sure what that is yet, the High Performance Circle is our very own
[02:31.320 -> 02:32.520] members club.
[02:32.520 -> 02:36.000] The good news about our club is that it's free to be a member.
[02:36.000 -> 02:42.720] All you need to do is go to thehighperformancepodcast.com, sign up to join the circle, you'll get an
[02:42.720 -> 02:48.600] invite and then you're in and you will get access to keynote speeches, you'll get access to exclusive podcast episodes,
[02:48.600 -> 02:52.400] short sharp high-performance boosts to make you feel good, you'll get
[02:52.400 -> 02:56.360] newsletters, you'll get exclusive discounts on products and brands that we
[02:56.360 -> 03:00.320] work closely with. It's a really cool place, it's our own community, it's called
[03:00.320 -> 03:06.160] the High Performance Circle and to sign up just go to thehighperformancepodcast.com,
[03:06.160 -> 03:08.480] click on the circle and you're in.
[03:08.480 -> 03:09.880] Now, one of the people who joined us
[03:09.880 -> 03:12.600] and delivered a fascinating keynote speech
[03:12.600 -> 03:14.480] was the former rower, Cath Bishop.
[03:14.480 -> 03:17.360] And you're about to hear a short snippet
[03:17.360 -> 03:19.200] from that talk that she gave us
[03:19.200 -> 03:20.800] on the High Performance Circle.
[03:23.360 -> 03:24.560] We need to take a step back
[03:24.560 -> 03:27.840] and think about how we frame winning, what it means,
[03:27.840 -> 03:34.200] what it represents, in order to find a better way to win, some better stories about what
[03:34.200 -> 03:40.600] winning feels like. Winning is everywhere. It's in the newspapers, it's in films, it's
[03:40.600 -> 03:45.200] on books, we sell products with it. it's everywhere. We hear it when we're
[03:45.200 -> 03:50.480] at school, we hear it in businesses, we hear it in sport, we hear it in politics. It surrounds
[03:50.480 -> 03:55.880] us but we need to be careful not to fall into a trap of defining winning as something very
[03:55.880 -> 04:03.960] narrow, short term, short lived and defined by others that actually holds us back from
[04:03.960 -> 04:08.680] exploring our potential and reaching high performance.
[04:08.680 -> 04:09.680] It's a good one this, Damien,
[04:09.680 -> 04:11.560] because it basically comes down to perception,
[04:11.560 -> 04:14.080] our perception of what's successful is.
[04:14.080 -> 04:15.800] Absolutely, I loved it.
[04:15.800 -> 04:19.480] I think there's a 15 word summary that I,
[04:19.480 -> 04:21.920] when people ask me for my definition of high performance,
[04:21.920 -> 04:23.760] the 15 words is do the best you can
[04:23.760 -> 04:28.800] with the resources you have in the moment you're in. i mi i fy nhefnogaeth o lefelau cyffro, mae'r 15 o fywydau'n gwneud y mwyaf y gallwch, gyda'r arian y gyda'ch, yn y moment y byddwch chi'n ymwneud â'i. Ac rwy'n credu bod yr hyn y mae Caff yn
[04:28.800 -> 04:32.640] ymdrechu fel eithaf gallan yw nad ydych chi'n cael ymdrechu, oherwydd y byddwch chi'n gyntaf,
[04:32.640 -> 04:36.400] neu y byddwch chi'n cyntaf, neu lle rydych chi'n dod, mae'n ymwneud â'ch bod chi wedi gwneud y mwyaf y
[04:36.400 -> 04:39.840] gallwch, gyda'r arian y gyda'ch, yn y moment y byddwch chi'n ymwneud â'i. Ac os yw'ch gweithredu
[04:39.840 -> 04:44.720] i hynny, mae'n iawn, mae'n gyfrif. Un o'ch broblemau gwych yw'r ffordd
[04:44.720 -> 04:47.180] y byddwn i gyd yn siarad am gyffro. Ac fe wnaeth e ddweud un artiglo gwych mewn that is yes, that's a victory. One of her big issues is the way that we all talk about success.
[04:47.180 -> 04:49.800] And she did a great article actually in the Guardian.
[04:49.800 -> 04:51.360] If you're in the UK, you'll know the Guardian.
[04:51.360 -> 04:53.340] If you're not, you can find it online.
[04:53.340 -> 04:55.560] It's a UK based newspaper.
[04:55.560 -> 04:56.480] She talks about that phrase,
[04:56.480 -> 04:59.320] fourth place is the worst place in the world to finish.
[04:59.320 -> 05:01.020] And she says, actually, the only reason we say that
[05:01.020 -> 05:03.520] is because many years ago,
[05:03.520 -> 05:05.960] someone decided you should get three medals,
[05:05.960 -> 05:06.920] bronze, silver, and gold.
[05:06.920 -> 05:08.040] Well, what if there was four medals?
[05:08.040 -> 05:09.760] Suddenly fifth would be the worst place to finish
[05:09.760 -> 05:12.300] and suddenly fourth would be elevated in its status,
[05:12.300 -> 05:15.760] yet you've performed exactly the same.
[05:15.760 -> 05:16.960] It's a really difficult one
[05:16.960 -> 05:19.240] because I want my kids to grow up in a world, Damien,
[05:19.240 -> 05:22.660] where they understand that coming first does matter
[05:22.660 -> 05:23.880] and it is a great thing.
[05:23.880 -> 05:25.080] But I also want them to live in a world where just doing their best is enough ddweud bod cyfrifedd yn mwynhau, ac mae'n beth gwych. Ond rwy'n eisiau iddyn nhw hefyd byw mewn byd
[05:25.080 -> 05:28.000] lle mae gwneud eu cymorth yn ddigon.
[05:28.000 -> 05:31.280] Oherwydd os oes rhywun yn fwy talented yn y ddinas
[05:31.280 -> 05:33.760] na chi, rhaid i chi ddweud hynny,
[05:33.760 -> 05:35.200] a rhaid i chi ddweud hynny i'r person hwnnw,
[05:35.200 -> 05:36.760] ond gallwch chi hefyd wneud eich cymorth.
[05:36.760 -> 05:39.480] Ie, ac dyna pam mae'n mynd yn ôl i'r definiad rydw i'n ei gael,
[05:39.480 -> 05:42.080] y bydd y cymorth y gallwch ei wneud yn wahanol
[05:42.080 -> 05:48.160] nag efallai rhywun arall sy'n dechrau gyda lefel mwyaf o ddifrifol, yn ymdrech i'ch eiliad.
[05:48.160 -> 05:52.880] Rwy'n clywed yn ddiweddar y byddai fy mhobl yn ei gyd yn y diwrnod o ysgol, ac roedd yn
[05:52.880 -> 05:57.520] ymdrech i'w gynllunio cyn i'w ddod yn ddiweddar yn ei gyrfa. Ac roedd y pwynt rydw i'n ei wneud yn
[05:57.520 -> 06:02.080] unig yr oeddwch chi'n ei ddweud, yw efallai y byddai pobl sy'n fwy cyflym na chi,
[06:02.080 -> 06:05.280] ond mae cymdeithas yn mynd allan yno yn y prynhawn
[06:05.280 -> 06:08.640] a yna ymlaen yn fwy cyflym na'ch gallwch. Ac yna ar ddiwedd,
[06:08.640 -> 06:12.160] par-lein y gallwch chi ddod yw'n ddiddorol os ydych chi'n gallu gysylltu â'r cwestiwn honestyn.
[06:12.160 -> 06:16.080] Rwyf wedi gwneud y mwyaf i'w gallu. Rwy'n credu ein bod yn rhaid i ni edrych ar
[06:16.080 -> 06:19.600] cyflwyno, ydych chi, drwy ddimensiynau mwy fwy fwy, yna, er enghraifft,
[06:19.600 -> 06:22.240] pan ddaeth i'r Olympiadau, mae'n unig ymddangos y gwrthwyneb.
[06:22.240 -> 06:26.160] Iawn, dyna'n rhoi i chi ddim wybodaeth am eu sefyllfa o fathau, the Olympics, it's just a medal table, right? That gives you no information about their injury
[06:26.160 -> 06:32.560] situation or their psychological status or whether Lady Luck has played a part or whether they've had
[06:32.560 -> 06:35.840] to go through some really difficult challenges ahead of an Olympic Games or whether they were
[06:35.840 -> 06:40.000] expected to finish eighth and they still finished second. You know, we look at it and go, just a
[06:40.000 -> 06:46.400] silver. I just think we have got work to do to change stubborn mindsets. We all
[06:46.400 -> 06:52.200] talk in cliches, we all talk about the world in the way that we've been taught
[06:52.200 -> 06:54.640] to look at it and talk about it. And I think one of the things I want this
[06:54.640 -> 06:58.280] podcast to do is just to challenge people's thinking. Like, I am not saying
[06:58.280 -> 07:02.240] that we have got the answers to any of these questions, but what I am saying is
[07:02.240 -> 07:05.000] that someone like Kath Bishop has a different wayeld bywydau gwahanol,
[07:05.000 -> 07:08.000] ac pa mor ddweud yw gweld e drwy ei gyd
[07:08.000 -> 07:10.000] ac yna ddecydu a ydym yn cydnabod hynny neu ddim.
[07:10.000 -> 07:11.000] 100%, Jake.
[07:11.000 -> 07:12.000] Rwy'n credu...
[07:12.000 -> 07:15.000] ymdrechion ysgrifennol yn aml yn fy nghyfnod
[07:15.000 -> 07:18.000] pan fydd unrhyw un yn cyflawni chi gyda pethau neu opsiwn.
[07:18.000 -> 07:20.000] Yn eithaf, rydych chi'n ei wneud hynny neu hynny.
[07:20.000 -> 07:22.000] Oherwydd dy byd ddim yn binari.
[07:22.000 -> 07:24.000] Dydyn ni ddim yn gwyn, neu'n llwyr.
[07:24.000 -> 07:46.000] Dydyn ni ddim yn cyfligig neu dydych chi ddim. Mae'n aml iawn o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o ffyrdd o f'r narratif y bydd y cyfansoddwyr yn cael yr atebau ac nid yw'r pwllhau unrhyw un y dylem ni fynd i'w gwrando.
[07:46.000 -> 07:49.000] Gwrando ar hyn o bryd pan fyddwn yn clywed y math o ffeiniad binarn
[07:49.000 -> 07:52.000] yn cael ei ddefnyddio i ni.
[07:52.000 -> 07:55.000] Mae'n rhaid i ni i gyd rhwng ein rhes, o'n i'n iawn?
[07:55.000 -> 07:56.000] Yn siŵr, ie.
[07:56.000 -> 07:58.000] Diolch i'r hoff gyntaf, Damien.
[07:58.000 -> 08:01.000] Diolch i Hannah a Will am eu gwaith haus o'r sgwrs
