In this episode, Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes analyze a prior interview with Rio Ferdinand, the first guest on the High Performance Podcast. They discuss expectation and its impact on performance, prompting a conversation about whether expectation is inherently positive or negative.
Professor Hughes explains that expectation can be categorized into three types: expecting to win, hoping to succeed, or hoping to avoid failure. He emphasizes that the type of expectation an individual holds can influence their effort and approach to a situation.
Ferdinand shares his experience as a Manchester United player, where there was a strong expectation to win trophies every season. This expectation was not solely imposed by the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, but also by the players themselves. Hughes highlights the significance of this shared responsibility and the role it played in fostering a winning culture within the team.
The discussion then delves into the concept of helpfulness as a guiding principle for decision-making. Hughes suggests that instead of categorizing situations as good or bad or as successes or failures, it is more beneficial to consider whether a particular action or approach is helpful or unhelpful in achieving a desired outcome. This perspective allows individuals to focus on making choices that contribute to their goals and objectives.
The episode concludes with Hughes emphasizing the importance of asking whether a situation is helpful or unhelpful, rather than judging it as good or bad. This approach, he argues, can lead to more productive and effective decision-making.
[00:00.000 -> 00:05.200] As a person with a very deep voice, I'm hired all the time for advertising campaigns.
[00:05.200 -> 00:10.880] But a deep voice doesn't sell B2B, and advertising on the wrong platform doesn't sell B2B either.
[00:10.880 -> 00:14.720] That's why if you're a B2B marketer, you should use LinkedIn ads.
[00:14.720 -> 00:19.920] LinkedIn has the targeting capabilities to help you reach the world's largest professional audience.
[00:19.920 -> 00:24.080] That's right, over 70 million decision makers all in one place.
[00:24.080 -> 00:26.840] All the bigwigs and mediumwigs.
[00:26.840 -> 00:29.520] Also smallwigs who are on the path to becoming bigwigs.
[00:29.520 -> 00:31.760] Okay, that's enough about wigs.
[00:31.760 -> 00:36.200] LinkedIn ads allows you to focus on getting your B2B message to the right people.
[00:36.200 -> 00:41.360] So does that mean you should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring me, the man with the deepest
[00:41.360 -> 00:42.840] voice in the world?
[00:42.840 -> 00:44.960] Yes, yes it does.
[00:44.960 -> 00:47.000] Get started today and see why LinkedIn
[00:47.000 -> 00:49.440] is the place to be, to be.
[00:49.440 -> 00:52.720] We'll even give you a $100 credit on your next campaign.
[00:52.720 -> 00:55.880] Go to linkedin.com slash results to claim your credit.
[00:55.880 -> 00:58.180] That's linkedin.com slash results.
[00:58.180 -> 00:59.560] Terms and conditions apply.
[01:02.560 -> 01:04.720] On our podcast, we love to highlight businesses
[01:04.720 -> 01:06.540] that are doing things a better way so you
[01:06.540 -> 01:11.600] can live a better life and that's why when I found Mint Mobile I had to share.
[01:11.600 -> 01:16.280] So Mint Mobile ditched retail stores and all those overhead costs and instead sells their
[01:16.280 -> 01:19.680] phone plans online and passes those savings to you.
[01:19.680 -> 01:23.880] And for a limited time they're passing on even more savings with a new customer offer
[01:23.880 -> 01:29.880] that cuts all Mint Mobile plans to $15 a month when you purchase a 3 month plan.
[01:29.880 -> 01:36.280] That's unlimited talk, text and data for $15 a month.
[01:36.280 -> 01:41.120] And by the way, the quality of Mint Mobile's wireless service in comparison to providers
[01:41.120 -> 01:44.040] that we've worked with before is incredible.
[01:44.040 -> 01:46.320] Mint Mobile is here to rescue you
[01:46.320 -> 01:49.200] with premium wireless plans for 15 bucks a month.
[01:49.200 -> 01:51.960] So say goodbye to your overpriced wireless plans,
[01:51.960 -> 01:53.680] those jaw-dropping monthly bills,
[01:53.680 -> 01:55.600] those unexpected overages,
[01:55.600 -> 01:58.120] because all the plans come with unlimited talk and text
[01:58.120 -> 01:59.520] and high-speed data
[01:59.520 -> 02:02.680] delivered on the nation's largest 5G network.
[02:02.680 -> 02:05.720] Use your own phone with any Mint Mobile plan, bring your
[02:05.720 -> 02:08.820] phone number along with all your existing contacts.
[02:08.820 -> 02:13.440] So ditch overpriced wireless with Mint Mobile's limited time deal and get premium wireless
[02:13.440 -> 02:19.400] service for just $15 a month. To get this new customer offer and your new 3 month unlimited
[02:19.400 -> 02:28.080] wireless plan for just $15 a month, go to mintmobile.com. HPP. That's mintmobile.com slash HPP.
[02:28.080 -> 02:33.880] Cut your wireless bill to 15 bucks a month at mintmobile.com slash HPP.
[02:33.880 -> 02:38.080] Additional taxes, fees and restrictions apply. See Mint Mobile for details.
[02:38.080 -> 02:42.880] Hi there, welcome along to another bite-sized episode of the High Performance Podcast. We have
[02:42.880 -> 02:48.760] been joined for the last year by some of the most remarkable leaders across the planet in
[02:48.760 -> 02:51.960] all different areas and we thought it'd be really useful for Damien and myself
[02:51.960 -> 02:55.720] just to pick out little snippets of the conversations that we've had and bring
[02:55.720 -> 02:59.720] those to you. So this episode is just a few minutes long and it's really a bit
[02:59.720 -> 03:03.160] of learning from a previous High Performance guest that we know will
[03:03.160 -> 03:08.000] enhance your life. Today's guest is Rio Ferdinand.
[03:10.000 -> 03:15.000] So that image that we would all have externally of, oh you go in and Sir Alex Ferguson lays down the law.
[03:15.000 -> 03:17.000] It was the players letting the other players know.
[03:17.000 -> 03:23.000] He'd laid the law down years ago and then all of a sudden the machine then works itself and he allowed,
[03:23.000 -> 03:27.200] what was great about Sir Alex Ferguson is he allowed the leaders in the changing room to run that
[03:27.200 -> 03:30.480] changing room I could probably count on one hand how many times you come into
[03:30.480 -> 03:33.960] our changing room the training ground we're there every day never comes in
[03:33.960 -> 03:37.600] there you run it how would you now describe the expectations you go in
[03:37.600 -> 03:41.320] there on day one what is expected at that period what was expected of a
[03:41.320 -> 03:47.080] Manchester United player at that time? To expect to win. Games or titles?
[03:47.080 -> 03:52.080] Titles, trophies. You take a trophy a season, minimum.
[03:52.080 -> 03:59.880] Right then Damien, expectation. With your learned Professor hat on, I suppose the first
[03:59.880 -> 04:04.120] question from me really, is expectation a positive or a negative thing?
[04:04.120 -> 04:09.240] Well it's neither. It's neither good or bad, it's either does it help you or is it
[04:09.240 -> 04:14.680] unhelpful Jake and I think to understand expectation we have to understand well
[04:14.680 -> 04:19.720] there's three possible expectations that our brain focuses on, we either go into
[04:19.720 -> 04:28.080] a situation expecting to win, expecting to succeed, we either walk in there hoping that we'll do well and succeed or the third one is we expect to yn y sylwadau sy'n gobeithio ymwyn, sy'n gobeithio cyflwr. Rydyn ni efallai yn ymwneud â'i gilio y byddwn yn gwneud yn dda ac yn cyflwr.
[04:28.080 -> 04:33.080] Neu'r trwyth gwrs yw, rydyn ni'n gobeithio ymwyn a ddod allan ar y ddifrif
[04:33.080 -> 04:34.280] o'r ddifrif.
[04:34.280 -> 04:38.280] Nawr, gall eich mhrein eich hun yn unig yn ymwneud â'r un o'r cymorthau hynny,
[04:38.280 -> 04:42.240] ond unwaith eich bod wedi'u penderfynu pa un yw'r un, bydd hynny'n ymwneud â'ch
[04:42.240 -> 04:43.240] ymdrechion.
[04:43.240 -> 04:45.920] Felly os ydych chi'n gobeithio ym gwyllt, byddwch chi'n gwybod
[04:45.920 -> 04:49.600] ffordd. Os ydych chi'n gobeithio yw gwyllt, byddwch chi'n gwybod ychydig o'r ymdrech.
[04:50.480 -> 04:53.920] Ac pa am y rhai eraill rydych chi'n ei ynsyn, sef gobeithio, os ydych chi'n gobeithio yw gwyllt?
[04:53.920 -> 04:58.560] Yn amlwg, gobeithio yw gwyllt. Yw'n eich ymdrech fwy ariannol na gobeithio yw gwyllt?
[04:58.560 -> 05:03.840] Yn wir, ond gobeithio yw gwyllt, mae'n ymddangos yr ego. Gallwch ddweud, wel, rydw i wedi ceisio,
[05:03.840 -> 05:06.480] rydw i wedi gwneud fy mhob gwad, ond nid yw'n ymwneud â
[05:06.480 -> 05:11.280] rhoi'r holl bethau allan yno. Rydych chi wedi rhoi rhai ffyrdd o ddwr ychydig i chi,
[05:11.280 -> 05:15.680] a os nad oedd yn gweithio, gallwch ddweud, wel, dwi ddim yn rhoi'r holl bethau,
[05:15.680 -> 05:20.880] neu eto, byddwch yn ddod yn hir i ddod o'r cyfeiriadau. Ond yr hyn y mae Rio yn ei ddysgrifio yno
[05:20.880 -> 05:27.000] oedd ym Mhantres Uned, roedd y sefydliad o'r gofyniad. cynnal a'u cymhau o'r bobl sydd wedi cael yr oedolion o fwynhau cyllid y trofi ychydig o flwyddyn.
[05:27.000 -> 05:32.000] Rwy'n credu mai un o'r pethau sydd wedi'u cynnig yma yw'r ffynonellau a'r
[05:32.000 -> 05:36.000] cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid
[05:36.000 -> 05:39.000] a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid
[05:39.000 -> 05:42.000] a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid
[05:42.000 -> 05:49.000] a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllid a'r cyllrchu'n gyfan ac yn eu hymdrechu gan y bobl sydd wedi cymryd yr erbynion cyhoeddiadol o gyfrif y trofi y blwyddyn.
[05:49.000 -> 05:57.000] Rwy'n credu bod un o'r pethau sy'n dweud pethau i mi yn y sgwrs honno, pan ddweud yma am yr erbynion, oedd y cymdeithas o'r clwb,
[05:57.000 -> 06:06.240] yr erbynion o'r grwp,yn, unrhyw busnes neu unrhyw ddyn,
[06:06.240 -> 06:11.200] pan mae'r grwp yn cymryd gofyn i'r cymorth. Mae'n gwneud eich swydd mor'n haws.
[06:11.200 -> 06:16.080] Ie, yn amlwg. Rwy'n credu bod y frasau rydyn ni'n defnyddio yn ystod ein hysbrydoliaeth gyda'r podcast yw
[06:16.080 -> 06:19.840] dyma'r architectau ddiwylliannol, dyma'r dynion heb ysbrydol.
[06:19.840 -> 06:47.440] Pan mae gennych grwp gynhwys o'r mwyaf neu'r mwyafwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan fwyaf o'r rhan of direction. Toby Ware And just one other little thing before we wrap up this little Bite Size episode, you said at the beginning of our little chat about
[06:47.440 -> 06:49.760] whether something's helpful or unhelpful.
[06:49.760 -> 06:52.680] I think rather than asking ourselves whether something's good or bad or whether it'll be
[06:52.680 -> 06:58.560] a success or a failure, surely isn't that the best question for any situation, any time,
[06:58.560 -> 07:03.840] whatever we're going through, when we're trying to come to a decision, is this helpful or
[07:03.840 -> 07:08.480] unhelpful? i ddod i'r penderfyniad, mae hyn yn ddefnyddiol neu'n ddefnyddiol? Rwy'n credu ei bod yn cwestiwn pwysig iawn, Jake, y byddwn i'n
[07:08.480 -> 07:11.840] os ydym yn dechrau defnyddio'r cwestiwn yn fwy cyffredin, mae'n dod at ni o'r syniad hwn
[07:11.840 -> 07:15.360] y byddai rhywbeth yn ddifrif, felly mae angen i ni ymdrech o'i gilydd, ac mae
[07:15.360 -> 07:18.560] ddau pethau yn y cyfrifiad hwnnw sy'n cyd-fynd ynglyn â'r cyfrifiad hwnnw.
[07:18.560 -> 07:21.920] Efallai y bydd y cyfrofiad yn bwysig bob amser, felly
[07:21.920 -> 07:25.440] gofyn eich hun, a oes hyn yn fy helpu ar y moment, neu a oes hwn yn ddiddorol?
[07:29.600 -> 07:30.400] Felly mae'n ddweud eich bod yn eithaf lifel i'w cael a wneud rhywbeth amdano,
[07:35.520 -> 07:40.320] mwy prodwythus. Ie, ac rwy'n credu ei fod yn mynd i'r iaith o ddewisau gwahanol, i'r peth mawr rydych chi'n mynd i ddweud i rywun. Dw i'n ddweud, rwy'n dysgu llawer o, cyn i mi ddweud
[07:40.320 -> 07:46.000] un peth mawr, a oes hwn yn ddiddorol neu ddiddorol? i'n ddweud hyn iddo nhw neu ydw i'n ddweud hyn i mi?
[07:46.000 -> 07:49.000] Gallai fod yn beth da i gysylltu â chi.
[07:49.000 -> 07:52.000] Ie, yn amlwg, ac yna dyna'r ffordd i chi ddweud hynny.
[07:52.000 -> 07:55.000] Dweud hynny wrth fy mhobl,
[07:55.000 -> 07:58.000] y byddwn ni'n gwneud ymdrechion binariadol
[07:58.000 -> 08:01.000] gyda'r myfyrwyr, ac yna maen nhw'n ei gynllunio
[08:01.000 -> 08:04.000] i mewn i le. Efallai, dweud,
[08:04.000 -> 08:06.880] dwi'n gweithio gyda fy mhobl ar y moment ar ei mathau, ac efallai
[08:06.880 -> 08:12.320] dweud, rwy'n ddifrifol ar mathau, ac yna dweud, nid, ac yna fe ddefnyddio'r sefyllfa o
[08:12.320 -> 08:17.280] fod yn ddifrifol ar mathau, er mwyn dweud, yw hwnnw'n ddewis i'w ddweud? Wel, y cyfrifiad
[08:17.280 -> 08:20.480] yw, nid, felly sut y gallwn ni gael ein wella ar mathau?
[08:20.480 -> 08:24.680] Mae'n dda iawn, yn dda. Fel bob amser, ychydig o ddewis o'r professor. Rwy'n siŵr
[08:24.680 -> 08:29.680] eich bod yn dda ar mathau, oherwydd dydych chi ddim yn gallu i'w ddod yn professor, yn siŵr, Very good. Wonderful. As always a little nugget of inspiration from the professor I'm sure you're great at maths because you can't become a professor surely unless you're good at some sort of equation
[08:30.440 -> 08:33.320] Appreciate your time as always mate. I love it. Jake. Thanks for having me along
[08:33.960 -> 08:35.000] Thanks a lot, Damien
