Summary

**Key Points and Main Arguments:**

- **Focus on the Journey, Not the Destination:**
- High performers recognize that the journey is more important than the destination.
- The process and experiences along the way are what truly matter.

- **Embrace Impermanence:**
- Feelings, emotions, and success are all temporary.
- Appreciate and make the most of the present moment.

- **Value Exploration:**
- Exploration allows for discovery, learning, and personal growth.
- It helps individuals enjoy the journey and focus on the present.

- **The Humility Cycle:**
- Being open and curious leads to learning and knowledge acquisition.
- The more knowledge gained, the greater the desire to learn more.
- This cycle promotes continuous learning and growth.

- **Grounding Techniques:**
- Concentrating on physical sensations and feelings brings the mind to the present.
- Simple exercises can help individuals focus on the present and appreciate the moment.

- **Reframe Success and Validation:**
- Imagine that the feeling of validation or success is no better than how one feels in the present.
- This mindset shift allows individuals to appreciate the present and enjoy the journey.

**Conclusion:**

The podcast emphasizes the importance of focusing on the journey rather than the destination. It encourages individuals to embrace impermanence, value exploration, and appreciate the present moment. By doing so, they can find fulfillment and satisfaction in the process, rather than solely relying on future achievements for validation.

[00:00.000 -> 00:04.080] Hey there, welcome along to another bite-sized episode of the High Performance Podcast.
[00:04.080 -> 00:08.960] These are just really short hits of inspiration where we take something that we think is really
[00:08.960 -> 00:12.720] important from one of the guests that we've featured over the last five series,
[00:12.720 -> 00:16.160] we have a listen, we talk about it and we hope that it helps.
[00:19.280 -> 00:24.560] As a person with a very deep voice, I'm hired all the time for advertising campaigns.
[00:24.560 -> 00:25.080] But a deep voice doesn't sell B2 the time for advertising campaigns. But a deep
[00:25.080 -> 00:30.560] voice doesn't sell B2B. And advertising on the wrong platform doesn't sell B2B either.
[00:30.560 -> 00:35.320] That's why if you're a B2B marketer, you should use LinkedIn ads. LinkedIn has the targeting
[00:35.320 -> 00:40.320] capabilities to help you reach the world's largest professional audience. That's right,
[00:40.320 -> 00:45.840] over 70 million decision makers all in one place. All the bigwigs and mediumwigs.
[00:45.840 -> 00:49.200] Also smallwigs who are on the path to becoming bigwigs.
[00:49.200 -> 00:50.640] Okay, that's enough about wigs.
[00:50.640 -> 00:55.360] LinkedIn ads allows you to focus on getting your B2B message to the right people.
[00:55.360 -> 00:59.520] So, does that mean you should use ads on LinkedIn instead of hiring me,
[00:59.520 -> 01:02.240] the man with the deepest voice in the world?
[01:02.240 -> 01:04.000] Yes. Yes, it does.
[01:04.000 -> 01:05.360] Get started today and see
[01:05.360 -> 01:10.640] why LinkedIn is the place to be, to be. We'll even give you a $100 credit on
[01:10.640 -> 01:14.880] your next campaign. Go to LinkedIn.com slash results to claim your credit.
[01:14.880 -> 01:20.440] That's LinkedIn.com slash results. Terms and conditions apply.
[01:20.880 -> 01:24.840] On our podcast we love to highlight businesses that are doing things a
[01:24.840 -> 01:25.920] better way so you
[01:25.920 -> 01:30.960] can live a better life and that's why when I found Mint Mobile I had to share.
[01:30.960 -> 01:35.640] So Mint Mobile ditched retail stores and all those overhead costs and instead sells their
[01:35.640 -> 01:39.040] phone plans online and passes those savings to you.
[01:39.040 -> 01:43.240] And for a limited time they're passing on even more savings with a new customer offer
[01:43.240 -> 01:49.160] that cuts all Mint Mobile plans to $15 a month when you purchase a three-month plan. That's
[01:49.160 -> 01:57.560] unlimited talk, text and data for $15 a month and by the way the quality of Mint
[01:57.560 -> 02:01.000] Mobile's wireless service in comparison to providers that we've worked with
[02:01.000 -> 02:09.240] before is incredible. Mint Mobile is here to rescue you with premium wireless plans for 15 bucks a month. So say goodbye to
[02:09.240 -> 02:13.080] your overpriced wireless plans, those jaw-dropping monthly bills, those
[02:13.080 -> 02:17.400] unexpected overages, because all the plans come with unlimited talk and text
[02:17.400 -> 02:22.320] and high-speed data delivered on the nation's largest 5G network. Use your
[02:22.320 -> 02:25.520] own phone with any Mint Mobile plan. Bring your phone number
[02:25.520 -> 02:28.180] along with all your existing contacts.
[02:28.180 -> 02:32.800] So ditch overpriced wireless with Mint Mobile's limited time deal and get premium wireless
[02:32.800 -> 02:38.780] service for just $15 a month. To get this new customer offer and your new 3 month unlimited
[02:38.780 -> 02:48.240] wireless plan for just $15 a month, go to mintmobile.com.hP. That's mintmobile.com slash HPP. Cut your
[02:48.240 -> 02:55.360] wireless bill to $15 a month at mintmobile.com slash HPP. Additional taxes, fees and restrictions
[02:55.360 -> 02:58.800] apply. See Mint Mobile for details.
[02:58.800 -> 03:08.200] I think we're all chasing yet. And if we realize that we never are going to arrive, that's the point. There is no yet.
[03:08.200 -> 03:17.040] It's always yet. And then if we can go, ah, life's a verb. It's the process. Shit, that's
[03:17.040 -> 03:20.520] as good as it gets. All right, I'm in.
[03:20.520 -> 03:25.840] Well, look, Damien, that's Matthew McConaughey, Oscar-winning actor, sharing his thoughts
[03:25.840 -> 03:30.600] with us. And what's really interesting is that whether it's someone like him, who is
[03:30.600 -> 03:36.400] an actor or a sports person or a business person, they all, by the time they reach high
[03:36.400 -> 03:42.040] performance, they all seem to have, through one way or another, worked out that the journey
[03:42.040 -> 03:46.240] is the important thing, not the destination. Don't you think? I'm not sure. I'm trying to sort of rack my brains while I'm asking the question. I can't think of anyone who's wedi gweithio allan, y bydd y ffordd yn beth pwysig, nid y dystod. Dydych chi'n meddwl? Dydw i ddim yn siŵr, rydw i'n ceisio
[03:46.240 -> 03:48.480] gyrraedd fy nghyfrain trwy gofyn y cwestiwn.
[03:48.480 -> 03:51.280] Dydw i ddim yn meddwl o unrhyw un sydd yn dal i fod yn
[03:51.280 -> 03:53.120] orientedig ar y cyfnod, a ydych chi?
[03:53.120 -> 03:55.360] Yn unol, Jake. Rwy'n credu bod pob un ohonyn nhw wedi
[03:55.360 -> 03:58.000] sefydlu eu bod wedi'u cyflawni'n unig
[03:58.000 -> 04:00.160] o Everest. Rydyn ni'n gwybod, maen nhw wedi gwneud miliwn o
[04:00.160 -> 04:02.320] rhai, mae e wedi gwyn Oscar, rydyn ni wedi cael bobl sydd wedi gwyn
[04:02.320 -> 04:07.000] Cwpau byd, ymhellach i ni a dweud nad oedd yn gwneud nhw'n hapus.
[04:07.000 -> 04:10.000] Dywedodd y rhai a oedd yn ymdrechu arno,
[04:10.000 -> 04:13.000] nid oedd yr hyn sy'n ymddangos y byddai arno pan oedd yn arwain yno.
[04:13.000 -> 04:15.000] Roedd y byd, roedd yr hyn roeddent wedi dysgu,
[04:15.000 -> 04:17.000] y bobl rydyn nhw wedi cyfuno ar y ffordd,
[04:17.000 -> 04:21.000] sy'n gwneud nhw'n hapus ac roedd cymorth a chyflogau'n dod.
[04:21.000 -> 04:23.000] A gwybodwch chi, efallai y bydd pobl yn clywed hyn nawr,
[04:23.000 -> 04:26.200] yn meddwl, oh, dyna'n bit of a shame because I've always thought in my
[04:26.200 -> 04:30.560] head when I get to X or Y I can finally be happy and now I can't be because
[04:30.560 -> 04:33.160] you're telling me that it's not about the arrival it's about the journey to
[04:33.160 -> 04:38.840] get there. The great news is you can be happy right now, you can have exactly the
[04:38.840 -> 04:43.820] same sense of satisfaction or that warm glow that you get inside or should I say
[04:43.820 -> 04:49.000] the warm glow you think you will get inside when you finally reach whatever nadir you've set for yourself.
[04:49.000 -> 04:52.840] But actually, you don't need to wait till you get there, because you can have it right
[04:52.840 -> 04:56.760] now. It's all about our own response to what we're going through.
[04:56.760 -> 04:58.640] Jason Vale Definitely. Everything is temporary. That's
[04:58.640 -> 05:03.200] what Matthew was saying to us there, that feelings are temporary, emotions are temporary,
[05:03.200 -> 05:07.000] success is temporary. So you might as well make the best of the moment that you're in
[05:07.000 -> 05:10.200] with the resources you've got and the knowledge that you have.
[05:10.200 -> 05:13.000] And I think that's where these Bite Size episodes
[05:13.000 -> 05:16.200] can just give you that little bit of knowledge that remind you of that.
[05:16.200 -> 05:20.000] Don't keep striving for tomorrow and what's going to come next.
[05:20.000 -> 05:23.000] Just enjoy today and what you have at the moment.
[05:23.000 -> 05:25.040] And one of the most common things that's been
[05:25.040 -> 05:30.320] discussed in this podcast is this sense of exploration. In fact, I'm happy to share the
[05:30.320 -> 05:35.440] news that Johanna Konta, the tennis player, is going to be on the podcast soon. And she talks
[05:35.440 -> 05:41.040] all the way through that episode about exploration and the importance of finally realising how vital
[05:41.040 -> 05:47.520] exploration is. Johnny Wilkinson did exactly the same. And the reason why I think that's relevant is because if we're just trudging through
[05:47.520 -> 05:50.880] solely thinking about where we're gonna get to in a year or in five years or in
[05:50.880 -> 05:55.040] ten years, then we're absolutely giving up the opportunity to explore what's
[05:55.040 -> 05:59.600] happening right now. And really, talking about the value of exploration is, I
[05:59.600 -> 06:04.700] think it's another way of enjoying the journey, of focusing on the now, exploring
[06:04.700 -> 06:08.440] how it feels to try and to strive and to fail and to struggle and to have small
[06:08.440 -> 06:09.540] successes, you know?
[06:09.540 -> 06:12.900] Definitely. There's an organisational psychologist called Adam Grant that
[06:12.900 -> 06:17.280] talks about the humility cycle, Jake, which is the same thing. It's about start
[06:17.280 -> 06:21.240] by being open and then that way it allows you to be curious, to learn and
[06:21.240 -> 06:26.960] then the more you learn, the more knowledge you get that then inspires i ddysgu. Ac yna, y mwy y ddysgwch, y mwy y gallwch chi ddysgu, yna yw'r rhan fwyaf o ddysgu a'r
[06:26.960 -> 06:32.000] ddysgwydd. Ac rwy'n credu y mwy y gallwn ein hyrwyddo ein hunain i'w wneud hynny, y mwy fwyaf y gallwn
[06:32.000 -> 06:36.400] ddysgu. Yw yna rhywbeth y gall pobl ei wneud ar hyn o bryd, ar y cwrdd â'r hyn, gwybod
[06:36.400 -> 06:40.720] bod yn cyfathrebu unig ar eu targedau, lle gallant ddewis eu meddwl ar hyn o bryd?
[06:40.720 -> 06:48.480] Ie, felly os ydych chi'n meddwl amdanyn nhw,ich bywyd yn gweithio, mae'n nhyddol fel bod yn dyradd o amser, felly gall dynnu mewn trwy ddrethau. Gall eich bywyd
[06:48.480 -> 06:52.000] eitha'n mynd i'r dyfodol lle rydych chi'n cynllunio'r golau hyn, gall eich bywyd mynd i'r
[06:52.000 -> 06:57.360] diwedd, lle gallwch eich bod yn meddwl am beth sy'n digwydd, neu'r lle lle y gall e'n mynd
[06:57.360 -> 07:01.120] yw i'r dyfodol, yn y moment hon. Gallwch ddod o'ch gynllunio'ch
[07:01.120 -> 07:09.920] ffynon a'ch sioe, gallwch ddod o'ch meddwl am y breath y byddwch yn eu cymryd, gallwch ddod o'ch think about feeling your feet in your shoes, you can think about the breath that you take in, you can feel about the clothes that are on your back and just concentrate on those feelings,
[07:09.920 -> 07:15.360] those sensations and that brings your mind very firmly into the present tense.
[07:15.360 -> 07:19.360] I love that and I would, I would offer one very quick exercise for whoever you are,
[07:19.360 -> 07:24.000] whatever you're doing, wherever you're listening to this, imagine right now the one thing that you
[07:24.000 -> 07:27.620] think is going to validate your life, the one big moment where you go, that's when I've
[07:27.620 -> 07:32.080] made it, that's when I will feel successful, I'll feel I've achieved, okay.
[07:32.080 -> 07:37.620] Now imagine that that feeling is no better than how you feel right now, this moment,
[07:37.620 -> 07:40.860] this day, because there's every chance that when you finally get there, it doesn't feel
[07:40.860 -> 07:42.100] any better than today.
[07:42.100 -> 07:49.600] And by accepting that right now, then you're suddenly on a totally different journey where it's not about the future, it's about, it's about now.
[07:49.600 -> 07:50.880] Would that work for you, Damien? Damien Mills
[07:50.880 -> 07:54.480] I think it's brilliant. I think that's a really powerful sense that you're not
[07:54.480 -> 07:59.040] thinking of what you're denying yourself, you're enjoying where you are with what you've got and
[07:59.040 -> 08:03.280] what you know. So there you go. Take that into your day, take that into your weekend. And there
[08:03.280 -> 08:06.920] we go. That's another Bite sized episode from the High Performance Podcast.
[08:06.920 -> 08:10.160] Hopefully you can't hear my kids in the background making too much noise.
[08:10.360 -> 08:13.600] But I don't mind because I'm living in the present and the present is they're
[08:13.600 -> 08:16.920] excited. The other side of the door where I'm doing this recording.
[08:17.120 -> 08:18.240] Thanks very much for joining us.
[08:18.240 -> 08:22.040] As always, thanks to Finn Ryan from Rethink Audio, to Will, to Hannah, to the
[08:22.040 -> 08:26.880] professor. But most of all, thanks to you for being part of the High Performance Podcast at Florence.
[08:26.880 -> 08:27.720] Say bye-bye.
[08:27.720 -> 08:28.540] Bye!
