[00:26.360 -> 00:31.880] We'll be speaking to the man himself in a moment, plus catching up with Christian Horner.
[00:31.880 -> 00:37.240] If you managed to miss the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, then it's fair to say
[00:37.240 -> 00:42.120] you missed one of the most dramatic title deciders in Formula 1 history.
[00:42.120 -> 00:49.320] Max passed his rival Lewis Hamilton to take the lead and the race win on the very last lap. With 54 laps of the race gone and with
[00:49.320 -> 00:53.960] Hamilton in an apparently comfortable 11-second lead, Max's chances of world
[00:53.960 -> 00:58.300] championship glory appeared to be over. But when Williams' Nicholas Latifi
[00:58.300 -> 01:02.320] crashed out and the safety car was released, Max was handed another chance.
[01:02.320 -> 01:06.640] Max pitted, took on soft tyres and and when the safety car left the track,
[01:06.640 -> 01:09.000] he pounced and passed Hamilton at Turn 5.
[01:09.280 -> 01:11.440] Lewis fought back on the following straight.
[01:11.480 -> 01:15.760] However, Max held on to take his tenth win of the year and more importantly,
[01:15.760 -> 01:21.440] his first World Championship crown and the team's first driver's title since 2013.
[01:21.800 -> 01:24.160] It's only right we hear from the man of the moment himself.
[01:24.280 -> 01:26.320] Steve caught up with him at the factory.
[01:26.320 -> 01:34.320] 2021 Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen, welcome back to the Talking Bull podcast and also
[01:34.320 -> 01:38.880] welcome back to the Red Bull Technology Campus where earlier you were greeted by all the factory
[01:38.880 -> 01:44.000] staff flying in the streets with orange flares as you cruised in in your orange Honda NSX.
[01:46.640 -> 01:52.160] with orange flares as you cruised in, in your orange Honda NSX. Tell us what it's like to be welcomed back like that as a world champion and more importantly, how is it being a Formula 1
[01:52.160 -> 01:58.320] world champion? It was very special, you know, to see everyone out there, you know, cheering me on
[01:58.320 -> 02:02.960] and it's an incredible feeling, of course, to win the championship but then also to come back and
[02:02.960 -> 02:11.200] see everyone who contributed to that success at the end of the day. And has it sunk in yet? Does it feel real or is it still
[02:11.200 -> 02:15.440] like you're going through the emotions doing all your commitments and maybe after the weekend you
[02:15.440 -> 02:21.520] go and celebrate it will sink in? Slowly it's of course sinking in because it's been very hectic
[02:21.520 -> 02:25.920] all the way until now but yeah it's definitely a very special feeling.
[02:26.640 -> 02:29.640] Let's go back to Sunday when you'd originally spoken to the fans.
[02:30.440 -> 02:32.840] When you woke up that morning, how were you feeling?
[02:33.080 -> 02:35.080] Were you focused in the zone?
[02:35.080 -> 02:37.160] I was very focused, but also nervous at the time.
[02:37.160 -> 02:39.560] I wouldn't have said it, but now I can.
[02:39.560 -> 02:43.000] You know, normally I'm not nervous, but it's a very important
[02:44.920 -> 02:47.520] was at the time, you know, super important to try and of course, try it's a very important... It was at the time super important to try and, of course,
[02:47.600 -> 02:48.960] try and become a world champion.
[02:49.040 -> 02:51.400] So, it would have been a very important race to me.
[02:51.480 -> 02:53.800] And, yeah, the nerves were there.
[02:54.360 -> 02:57.000] And if we just quickly go into the race a little bit,
[02:57.960 -> 03:03.520] one of the things was Chaco's incredible defensive moves about over Lewis.
[03:03.800 -> 03:05.400] Have you had a chance to watch any of them back?
[03:05.400 -> 03:06.400] Have you spoke to him about that?
[03:06.400 -> 03:09.200] Yeah, I mean, the moves Checo pulled off were insane.
[03:09.200 -> 03:11.200] And without him, I wouldn't have been sitting here now
[03:11.200 -> 03:12.440] as a world champion.
[03:12.440 -> 03:15.480] So I will be forever thankful to Checo as well,
[03:15.480 -> 03:16.640] what he did for me.
[03:16.640 -> 03:20.240] And on that last lap, when you took P1,
[03:20.240 -> 03:22.240] crossed the finish line, just tell us your emotions.
[03:22.240 -> 03:25.060] We heard it, but I mean, yeah, let's hear it from you
[03:25.060 -> 03:29.760] I don't know. It was just a big blur everyone screaming. I was screaming just everything came out
[03:41.140 -> 03:45.000] Max for stepping you are, you are the world champion!
[03:45.000 -> 03:47.000] The world champion!
[03:47.000 -> 03:51.000] Mate, you absolutely deserve it!
[03:51.000 -> 03:54.000] You absolutely deserve it, you've had no luck!
[03:54.000 -> 03:57.000] Max, we are so proud of you!
[03:57.000 -> 04:02.000] Oh my god guys, I love you so much!
[04:02.000 -> 04:06.120] You have driven like a champion all year.
[04:06.120 -> 04:07.480] You deserve that.
[04:07.480 -> 04:08.720] We needed a bit of luck.
[04:08.720 -> 04:09.720] You got it.
[04:09.720 -> 04:11.480] You made it happen.
[04:11.480 -> 04:13.280] And we love you.
[04:13.280 -> 04:15.560] We absolutely love you.
[04:15.560 -> 04:18.040] It is unbelievable guys.
[04:18.040 -> 04:20.840] Can we do this for another 10, 15 years together?
[04:20.840 -> 04:27.520] It was a very tense season, very busy, a lot of pressure and then when you realise you
[04:27.520 -> 04:32.040] won the championship, it's just an incredible outburst of emotions.
[04:32.040 -> 04:37.120] Season's now finished, from here you go to the FIA, prize giving, then from there talk
[04:37.120 -> 04:41.320] us about what you're going to do in the off-season before we catch up with you again next year.
[04:41.320 -> 04:48.000] I try to relax as much as I can because it's been a really intense season and I can't see a car for a few weeks, a racing car.
[04:48.000 -> 04:52.000] I think that's quite understandable with the intense season you've had.
[04:52.000 -> 04:58.000] So, one more thing is we asked our fans at the Red Bull Racing Paddock to ask Max anything.
[04:58.000 -> 05:06.640] If they could ask their 2021 Formula One World Champion any question, what would it be? Yeah. Now, we've pulled together our favorites.
[05:06.640 -> 05:10.800] There's been absolutely some amazing ones, so thank you everyone for submitting them.
[05:10.800 -> 05:13.360] So, if you're happy to, we'd love you to just run through them,
[05:14.080 -> 05:18.640] answer some of them, and then Max Verstappen, we'll let you go for the 2021 season.
[05:18.640 -> 05:19.440] Well, of course.
[05:19.440 -> 05:22.560] Hi Max, congrats on winning the championship this year.
[05:22.560 -> 05:24.960] Watching you race has been simply lovely.
[05:24.960 -> 05:25.080] My question is, if you could race in any other era, which would it be and why? Congrats on winning the championship this year. Watching you race has been simply lovely.
[05:25.080 -> 05:29.160] My question is, if you could race in any other era, which would it be and why?
[05:29.160 -> 05:32.280] Difficult one, because I'm actually quite happy in the era I'm driving.
[05:32.280 -> 05:38.520] You know, the cars are nice and safe as well, but maybe early 2000s or when Rebel was winning
[05:38.520 -> 05:40.160] the other championships as well.
[05:40.160 -> 05:47.400] So you know, like 2011, 12, 13, 10, these kind of like cards, I would have been good.
[05:47.400 -> 05:50.800] Who was the first person you called on the phone after you won the World Championship?
[05:51.600 -> 05:56.300] To be honest, I didn't have the time to call anyone because it was so hectic that, you know,
[05:56.300 -> 06:02.000] people called my manager or my dad and I just picked up the phone from them because my phone,
[06:02.500 -> 06:05.400] I didn't even see it until I think 10 11 in the
[06:05.400 -> 06:10.880] evening so I was pretty crazy. Have you ever had to sneeze while driving? Yeah
[06:10.880 -> 06:16.200] this this mostly happens when you're sick so yeah it did it did happen to me
[06:16.200 -> 06:20.560] before when I was not feeling entirely well while driving and you're braking or
[06:20.560 -> 06:24.000] going into a corner you have to sneeze yeah. What was your favorite moment of
[06:24.000 -> 06:25.520] this season besides winning?
[06:25.520 -> 06:30.280] I think in general just the whole battle throughout the whole season that was the favorite thing.
[06:30.280 -> 06:33.440] Just constantly going to a weekend knowing that there is a chance of winning but also
[06:33.440 -> 06:36.400] then having that tough battle against Lewis.
[06:36.400 -> 06:38.200] What are your top three races from this season?
[06:38.200 -> 06:44.320] It's hard to choose three but Monaco win, Sunfield win and I think at the end of the
[06:44.320 -> 06:46.560] day the race in general wasn't
[06:46.560 -> 06:50.800] particularly great, but that last lap was very important, so I would always, of course, put
[06:50.800 -> 06:56.240] Abu Dhabi in there. How does it feel to go fast? It feels good. It's been my life since I was four
[06:56.240 -> 07:02.080] years old, so I love it. I love driving a car or whatever it is to the limit and really test my
[07:02.080 -> 07:05.000] skills as well. That's what I enjoy the most.
[07:05.000 -> 07:08.000] Hi Max, congratulations on winning the championship this season.
[07:08.000 -> 07:10.000] My question kind of comes in two parts.
[07:10.000 -> 07:13.000] First of all, what was your favourite thing about being teammates with Checo this season?
[07:13.000 -> 07:16.000] And secondly, did you get that tequila together?
[07:16.000 -> 07:19.000] Now you've won the championship. Thank you!
[07:19.000 -> 07:22.000] Favourite part? I think Checo is just a great person.
[07:22.000 -> 07:26.000] It's not only about Formula 1, but just in general life.
[07:26.000 -> 07:30.000] He's a real family man and to be able to talk about these kind of things as well,
[07:30.000 -> 07:34.000] like off the track or just a little bit away from it, he's just really enjoyable to be with.
[07:34.000 -> 07:39.000] And besides that, he's been a great team on the track, being really helpful.
[07:39.000 -> 07:42.000] But also, we just got along really well.
[07:42.000 -> 07:46.000] We were always trying to achieve the same goal and that has been incredibly nice.
[07:47.000 -> 07:51.000] And no, we haven't had the drink yet, but I'm sure we will do it.
[07:52.000 -> 07:56.000] Hi Max, congratulations for your first ever Formula 1 World Title.
[07:57.000 -> 08:01.000] How does it feel for you to be the first Formula 1 World Champion from the Netherlands?
[08:02.000 -> 08:03.000] Greetings from the Philippines.
[08:03.500 -> 08:09.400] from the Netherlands. Greetings from the Philippines. Yeah, it's crazy. I mean, because I saw my dad driving in Formula One and our goal
[08:09.400 -> 08:12.960] always, you know, when I was little and from my dad's side as well, was to be in
[08:12.960 -> 08:16.800] Formula One and try to win races. But now, of course, to win a championship has
[08:16.800 -> 08:20.560] been on another level and also, you know, the messages I received from Holland and
[08:20.560 -> 08:26.720] everything is pretty insane. And yeah, I'm proud to be Dutch, so I'm also very happy to be the first
[08:27.360 -> 08:33.280] Dutch driver to win it. That sounds great. Well, thank you for delivering all our fans an
[08:33.280 -> 08:38.480] absolutely incredible season and especially the staff here. Have a great off-season, rest up and
[08:38.480 -> 08:42.160] we look forward to seeing you back in 2022. Yeah, and then we'll try to do it all again.
[08:42.160 -> 08:47.000] Lovely stuff, thank you. Big congratulations Max Max. Couldn't be happier for you.
[08:47.000 -> 08:49.000] And it's all to play for next year.
[08:49.000 -> 08:52.000] Right now, I'm joined by Christian Horner here on Talking Ball.
[08:52.000 -> 08:54.000] Christian, what a final race. How are you feeling?
[08:54.000 -> 08:57.000] Has any of that sunk in yet?
[08:57.000 -> 09:00.000] The emotions from the weekend were incredible.
[09:00.000 -> 09:02.000] It's been such an intense season.
[09:02.000 -> 09:05.440] I think until we see Max pick up that
[09:07.720 -> 09:09.920] World Drivers Championship trophy in Paris, it won't quite sink in.
[09:10.320 -> 09:12.920] It's been a few years since we've bagged a World Championship win.
[09:12.960 -> 09:16.920] How does that one compare to the others bagged with Seb over the years?
[09:17.320 -> 09:19.640] This is probably up there with the first one, to be honest with you,
[09:19.640 -> 09:22.080] because it's been so intense.
[09:22.080 -> 09:25.920] It's been so fiercely competitive throughout the
[09:25.920 -> 09:31.600] season, so to come through and win this championship right at the end on the
[09:31.600 -> 09:37.240] last lap of the last race has been a phenomenal, phenomenal achievement by Max
[09:37.240 -> 09:39.960] and by the whole team. Who would have thought it would have come down to the
[09:39.960 -> 09:43.680] very last lap of the race? What a brilliant strategy to put the softs on
[09:43.680 -> 09:49.240] when the safety car came out. Yeah it it was a great strategy call. I think
[09:49.240 -> 09:54.320] that we rolled the dice, we took the risk, we pitted and put the softs on, we had nothing
[09:54.320 -> 09:59.560] to lose. We were surprised that Mercedes didn't do likewise because Lewis had been on those
[09:59.560 -> 10:06.280] tyres for close to, I think, 40 or so laps. So, you know, we were in the perfect position,
[10:06.280 -> 10:07.360] you know, for the restart.
[10:07.360 -> 10:09.080] And we've seen that before.
[10:10.080 -> 10:11.760] You know, it happened to us, I think, in Barcelona,
[10:11.760 -> 10:15.080] where, you know, Lewis had a free stop.
[10:16.160 -> 10:17.960] But, you know, it all worked out.
[10:17.960 -> 10:20.360] And I think that Max had to make that pass
[10:20.360 -> 10:21.200] at the end of the day.
[10:21.200 -> 10:22.520] He had one lap to do it.
[10:22.520 -> 10:24.920] And turn five, you know, he fully sent it.
[10:24.920 -> 10:26.200] And he really did send it.
[10:26.200 -> 10:28.840] How important were the strategy decisions
[10:28.840 -> 10:30.560] across the weekend?
[10:30.560 -> 10:32.320] The strategy decisions that we made for the race
[10:32.320 -> 10:34.720] were absolutely key to the outcome.
[10:34.720 -> 10:37.000] Making that choice, making that decision
[10:37.000 -> 10:39.760] in the heat of the moment was a crucial call,
[10:39.760 -> 10:43.680] and it worked out beautifully for Max.
[10:43.680 -> 10:45.400] What was the highlight of the weekend for you?
[10:45.400 -> 10:46.400] The highlight of the weekend for me
[10:46.400 -> 10:48.120] was seeing Max cross the line
[10:48.120 -> 10:51.080] and become the world champion,
[10:51.080 -> 10:53.120] become our fifth world drivers world champion
[10:53.120 -> 10:54.640] or for the fifth time.
[10:54.640 -> 10:57.240] And yeah, it was just an unbelievable feeling
[10:57.240 -> 10:59.080] because it felt for so much of the race
[10:59.080 -> 11:01.200] that it was slipping away,
[11:01.200 -> 11:05.840] that all the season, all that hard work over the whole year,
[11:05.840 -> 11:09.840] all those victories were going to come to nothing. But finally, at the end there,
[11:09.840 -> 11:17.920] we finally got a bit of good luck. With the safety car, the T4, it was an important moment for us.
[11:18.720 -> 11:24.560] And finally, we managed to make it work. Now, it's been a competitive year between us and
[11:24.560 -> 11:25.800] Mercedes. How have you found it going toe-to-toe with them this year? we managed to make it work. Now it's been a competitive year between us and Mercedes,
[11:25.800 -> 11:29.000] how have you found it going toe to toe with them this year?
[11:29.000 -> 11:30.760] Yeah, look, it's been a fiercely competitive year.
[11:30.760 -> 11:31.960] I mean, Toto and I shook hands
[11:31.960 -> 11:34.620] before the start of the Grand Prix.
[11:34.620 -> 11:36.780] It was an intense year.
[11:37.680 -> 11:39.620] We're both competitive people, we both want to win,
[11:39.620 -> 11:42.880] and it hurts when you lose.
[11:42.880 -> 11:50.280] And what makes this victory so much more valuable to us is the quality of the opposition.
[11:50.280 -> 11:51.980] Mercedes are a great, great team.
[11:51.980 -> 11:56.440] What they've achieved in the last seven years, they've annihilated the opposition.
[11:56.440 -> 12:02.060] Lewis Hamilton has destroyed the opposition and finally we've managed to take the fight
[12:02.060 -> 12:06.000] to them and beat Lewis in a Mercedes at the final race.
[12:06.000 -> 12:11.000] That's been so satisfying. It's of course been Checo's first season with the team.
[12:11.000 -> 12:13.000] How do you think he's got on?
[12:13.000 -> 12:17.000] Checo's played a key, key role for us this year. Particularly in the second half of the year.
[12:17.000 -> 12:22.000] He's been a phenomenal servant to the team to assist his teammate.
[12:22.000 -> 12:28.560] Whether it was a tow in Monza, whether it was fighting with Lewis in Istanbul earlier in the year.
[12:28.960 -> 12:33.680] What he did on Saturday qualifying, again, towing his teammate round to the pole position
[12:34.960 -> 12:42.680] and then most dramatically, defending like a lion against Lewis,
[12:42.680 -> 12:48.400] that would cost him vital time, without which Mercedes would have had a free pit stop
[12:48.400 -> 12:52.400] and probably would have won this World Championship.
[12:52.400 -> 12:58.400] And obviously Checo took over from Alex Albon, but he's been hugely involved behind the scenes, hasn't he?
[12:58.400 -> 13:03.200] Alex Albon is absolutely an unsung hero of this season.
[13:03.200 -> 13:05.680] The hours that he's put in behind the scenes,
[13:05.760 -> 13:07.680] in the simulator, in the dark simulator room,
[13:07.760 -> 13:11.120] in the bowels of the factory,
[13:11.200 -> 13:13.160] late on a Friday evening,
[13:13.240 -> 13:16.200] supporting the race drivers, assisting the race drivers.
[13:16.280 -> 13:17.520] He's done an unbelievable job.
[13:17.600 -> 13:20.480] He's also acted as a driver coach in the second half of the year
[13:20.560 -> 13:23.960] to Yuki Zanoda, who has made real progress.
[13:24.040 -> 13:26.640] And we'll be very sad to see Alex go but
[13:26.640 -> 13:32.320] we're delighted that he's got a seat in Formula One next year with the Williams team and we'll be
[13:32.320 -> 13:37.840] certainly wishing him all the best and rooting for him next season. Yeah good luck next year Alex.
[13:37.840 -> 13:42.480] Red Bull is such a huge team, people see the guys in the garage in the pit what the race is but the
[13:42.480 -> 13:45.400] reality is the operation is way bigger with
[13:45.800 -> 13:47.800] everyone working back at the factory as well.
[13:48.280 -> 13:51.480] What does it feel like to be responsible for all of that?
[13:51.960 -> 13:53.960] Being responsible for this team
[13:54.800 -> 13:59.200] is a huge pleasure and privilege, you know, working with the quality of people that we have,
[13:59.520 -> 14:03.800] the strength and depth that we have, and it's thanks to all those people,
[14:03.920 -> 14:07.440] all the guys and girls within the team,
[14:07.440 -> 14:09.160] that we've been able to achieve
[14:09.160 -> 14:10.920] what people would have thought was impossible.
[14:10.920 -> 14:13.320] And I think we've demonstrated that
[14:13.320 -> 14:15.240] if you really want something badly enough,
[14:15.240 -> 14:18.920] if you commit yourself to a dream,
[14:18.920 -> 14:22.640] to a goal and a target, anything is achievable.
[14:22.640 -> 14:25.600] And I think we've clearly demonstrated that this year.
[14:31.200 -> 14:36.160] How important are the fans to the team? It's been hugely vital to have support from behind the scenes and support from all the supporters and the fans. Wherever we go around the world,
[14:36.160 -> 14:43.280] we've seen a fan base growing as the popularity of Formula 1 continues to increase and whether
[14:43.280 -> 14:51.460] you're a Red Bull fan, a Mercedes fan, a Ferrari fan, a McLaren fan, it doesn't matter. The sport has just really
[14:51.460 -> 14:54.920] delivered this year. The racing's been great, the championship's been intense
[14:54.920 -> 15:02.080] and we've just been overwhelmed by all the messages, all the support all around
[15:02.080 -> 15:08.160] the world at every single Grand Prix that we've been to. Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us Christian. Big congratulations
[15:08.160 -> 15:11.280] once again. I hope you have a good holiday. Thanks a lot. Well that's it for
[15:11.280 -> 15:14.640] this edition of Talking Bull and what a season it's been. We finished with Max
[15:14.640 -> 15:18.740] Verstappen as the 2021 World Champion. We hope you have a fantastic holiday
[15:18.740 -> 15:22.240] season wherever you are. We'll be back with more action from the track, the
[15:22.240 -> 15:28.860] paddock and the factory in the new year where Max will be looking to defend that title and it's all to play for again.
[15:28.860 -> 15:30.100] Until then, take care.
