[00:00.000 -> 00:02.000] I am Max Verstappen.
[00:02.000 -> 00:04.000] You've won the Austrian Grand Prix!
[00:04.000 -> 00:07.000] Oh, this feels f***ing good!
[00:07.000 -> 00:09.000] Hi there, this is Christian Horner.
[00:09.000 -> 00:14.000] Hey, I'm Daniel Ricciardo and you're listening to the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Podcast.
[00:14.000 -> 00:15.000] That's really cool.
[00:16.000 -> 00:21.000] Hello and welcome to a very special episode of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Podcast.
[00:21.000 -> 00:26.360] It's the end of the 2018 season and what a year it's been.
[00:26.360 -> 00:30.400] The final laps have been turned, the last of the flight cases have been sealed and are
[00:30.400 -> 00:36.960] back at base, and after 21 roller coaster races, the 2018 Formula 1 season is a wrap.
[00:36.960 -> 00:40.580] Looking back at the year just gone, it's hard to encapsulate what the team has been through
[00:40.580 -> 00:45.400] over the past 8 months or so, but if we were to choose one word to describe it all,
[00:45.400 -> 00:47.720] that word might be bittersweet.
[00:47.720 -> 00:51.800] We did score four wins, a total of 13 podiums, 419 points
[00:51.800 -> 00:54.520] and third place in the Constructors' Championship.
[00:54.520 -> 00:56.040] We had some of the finest moments
[00:56.040 -> 00:59.960] the team has experienced in F1's turbo hybrid era.
[00:59.960 -> 01:02.320] This also marks the end of Daniel Ricciardo's
[01:02.320 -> 01:04.400] Red Bull Racing journey for now.
[01:04.400 -> 01:10.680] On this very special edition, we'll speak to him exclusively about all of his experiences over the years.
[01:10.880 -> 01:14.000] We'll check in with Max Verstappen about his very successful season.
[01:14.200 -> 01:19.000] And, you know, we'd like to introduce you to the other brilliant areas of the Red Bull family.
[01:19.200 -> 01:22.880] We speak to Red Bull Freestyle MTB athlete Matt Jones.
[01:23.080 -> 01:26.080] We must start with the first part of a Daniel interview though.
[01:26.080 -> 01:28.480] Steve caught up with him at the factory.
[01:28.480 -> 01:31.280] So Daniel Vercado, this is it.
[01:31.280 -> 01:33.360] Your final day with the team.
[01:33.360 -> 01:34.320] How does it feel?
[01:34.320 -> 01:36.280] I think it's sunk in.
[01:36.280 -> 01:39.000] It feels real now.
[01:39.000 -> 01:40.560] A little sad, I won't lie.
[01:40.560 -> 01:42.640] We just did a debrief and saw all the team
[01:42.640 -> 01:51.120] and watched a little clip of my time here at Red Bull Racing and yeah it's I'd say it's sinking in
[01:51.120 -> 01:56.800] I've got about an hour and a half drive back tonight in the car where I'm sure I'll
[01:56.800 -> 02:01.040] have a moment to myself and yeah it's been fun I've enjoyed it.
[02:01.040 -> 02:06.000] Fair to say an emotional day at the factory? It's fair to say that Steve, yes.
[02:06.000 -> 02:09.000] One would say that.
[02:09.000 -> 02:13.000] One must not protest against that thought and emotion.
[02:13.000 -> 02:18.000] Yeah, I got a cool gift as well so,
[02:18.000 -> 02:20.000] no it's been a strong day.
[02:20.000 -> 02:22.000] It's so easy and you're so like,
[02:22.000 -> 02:23.000] I think it's just with sport in general,
[02:23.000 -> 02:34.000] you're so driven and you're always thinking about what's next, what's next and you don't actually often enough look back on how far you've come and what you've achieved and the people around you and all that.
[02:34.000 -> 02:44.000] I think today it was more of a realisation of that and like my time here and not just here but as part of the Red Bull family so it's, yeah, it's starting to hit home a bit.
[02:44.000 -> 02:46.080] 11 years with the Red Bull family so it's yeah it's starting to hit home a bit. 11 years with the Red Bull family?
[02:46.080 -> 02:51.200] I think I signed the contract 11 years ago and then from the first season I think it was 10
[02:51.200 -> 02:54.960] seasons but yeah 11 years since pen to paper so.
[02:54.960 -> 02:58.000] Let's take you back right to the very start then as it's your last day.
[02:58.000 -> 03:03.520] Talk us through that decision to make the big step to leave Australia to pursue your dreams.
[03:03.520 -> 03:08.120] There was a lot of things which were weird about it in terms of I wasn't really convinced
[03:08.120 -> 03:13.000] in my own ability if it's what I wanted to do in general as a career path.
[03:13.000 -> 03:19.480] Honestly I didn't really have much affection for airports or airplanes so to kind of throw
[03:19.480 -> 03:25.280] myself into a foreign country and know that I was going to be chasing a life which involved a lot
[03:25.280 -> 03:27.080] of those things that I wasn't sure about.
[03:27.080 -> 03:28.080] It was weird.
[03:28.080 -> 03:33.600] I don't know, part of me just feels I was like young and kind of naive and in a way
[03:33.600 -> 03:38.360] that helped me because I didn't, I think now if I thought about it I would have probably
[03:38.360 -> 03:42.320] backed away from it if I knew everything about the world that I know now or something.
[03:42.320 -> 03:46.320] So yeah, probably just being naive and young and kind of immature was probably a blessing
[03:46.320 -> 03:47.320] in disguise.
[03:47.320 -> 03:50.840] But yeah, I remember there was a lot of late nights in the office at home.
[03:50.840 -> 03:55.800] We had an office at the front of the house or study, whatever you call it, and a room
[03:55.800 -> 03:56.800] where the computer is.
[03:56.800 -> 04:04.000] And me, mum and dad would spend, yeah, a lot of late nights there in 2007, beginning of
[04:04.000 -> 04:05.920] 2007, trying to figure out what the hell to do.
[04:05.920 -> 04:08.600] And I still don't know how we came to the decision,
[04:08.600 -> 04:10.160] but, anyway.
[04:10.160 -> 04:12.320] Where I lived made Milton Keynes seem
[04:12.320 -> 04:14.160] like a five-star destination, trust me.
[04:14.160 -> 04:17.760] When I moved to Italy, it was, it was grisly.
[04:17.760 -> 04:21.400] Grisly, putting it very politely.
[04:21.400 -> 04:22.680] Obviously a lot of long days,
[04:22.680 -> 04:24.680] a lot of hard work to follow.
[04:24.680 -> 04:26.280] And then in 2013 2013 you got the
[04:26.280 -> 04:28.400] call that you'd made.
[04:28.400 -> 04:32.120] Red Bull Racing at the time obviously one of the most sought after seats after four
[04:32.120 -> 04:34.520] wheel track championships with Seb.
[04:34.520 -> 04:36.080] Talk us through that feeling.
[04:36.080 -> 04:41.760] That was really what it was all about, especially since signing the initial Red Bull contract
[04:41.760 -> 04:46.480] at the end of 2007, the ultimate target was to build my
[04:46.480 -> 04:52.720] way up to a Red Bull racing seat, you know, and then halfway through 2013 when I got confirmation
[04:52.720 -> 04:59.520] that that seat was going to be mine for the 2014 season, that was like, in a way, it was like,
[04:59.520 -> 05:06.860] I've made it, like I've done what I set out for and now I've put myself in the position with a top team,
[05:06.860 -> 05:10.900] in the top level of motorsport and it was a relief.
[05:10.900 -> 05:17.060] And then the rest was, in a way, the rest came easy in terms of, I felt like the hard
[05:17.060 -> 05:18.060] part was getting there.
[05:18.060 -> 05:22.300] Then just, once I was there, I felt comfortable and I was like, alright, now I can actually
[05:22.300 -> 05:30.520] just like flourish in a way but that was that was massive that was a massive break and moment and at
[05:30.520 -> 05:34.400] that time I don't think all the team you know had full belief in me it was there
[05:34.400 -> 05:38.240] was a bit of a risk you know in choosing me I was still young and hadn't proven a
[05:38.240 -> 05:43.280] whole lot but I knew in my mind I was I was ready so that was all I needed.
[05:43.280 -> 05:46.000] And that first race in Australia must have underlined that for you.
[05:46.000 -> 05:48.000] Yeah, that was super important.
[05:48.000 -> 05:52.000] You know, for me, my confidence, but for whoever in the team
[05:52.000 -> 05:54.000] didn't quite think I was the right choice,
[05:54.000 -> 05:57.000] that was immediately putting everything to bed.
[05:57.000 -> 06:01.000] And that was really important for getting the team,
[06:01.000 -> 06:04.000] in a way, motivated and excited about me.
[06:04.000 -> 06:05.280] Obviously, they were already excited
[06:05.280 -> 06:10.400] about Seb, he'd proven himself, but it was like, all right, what's this little scruffy curly-head
[06:10.400 -> 06:14.720] kid going to do? And that immediately set a statement and it was perfect. Even though we
[06:14.720 -> 06:19.120] got disqualified after, the whole weekend was still perfect and it did me wonders.
[06:19.120 -> 06:23.280] The season that followed, obviously, was that beyond what you could have ever imagined for
[06:23.280 -> 06:30.560] your debut year? Yeah, looking back at it, yeah. I haven't won three races in a single season since then.
[06:31.920 -> 06:38.160] I actually had back-to-back wins that year. It was crazy and it was everything. I think it was
[06:38.160 -> 06:44.720] Monaco, so what's that, the fifth or sixth race of the year. I qualified third, I beat Seb, but I was
[06:44.720 -> 06:46.240] filthy because I knew I could have got pole. I made a bit of a mistake on my year. I qualified third, I beat Seb, but I was filthy because I knew I could
[06:46.240 -> 06:50.720] have got pole. I made a bit of a mistake on my lap and I was like pole is there. So already like
[06:50.720 -> 06:57.360] five, six races in to that like debut season with the team, I was already expecting so much of myself.
[06:57.360 -> 07:05.520] So yeah, that year was, it changed me completely. And of course the honey badger really came to the fore that year and
[07:05.520 -> 07:11.660] everyone knew your alter ego, you're a great man. We read in the Players Tribune article
[07:11.660 -> 07:18.660] recently the true meaning of the honey badger, remind us what is the true meaning? Yeah I
[07:18.660 -> 07:26.640] mean for me it was, I always felt like it was perfect, especially in that stage of my career.
[07:26.640 -> 07:31.840] A lot of people, especially at that time before they really knew what I was capable of on track,
[07:31.840 -> 07:41.040] it was like I'm the nice guy and cute cuddly kid, but they didn't know that kind of hunger
[07:41.040 -> 07:45.820] and determination, that real raw fight I have in me
[07:48.920 -> 07:54.380] And that was where I felt the honey badger came in, you know from the outside If you don't know anything about it, you look at it and you're like, oh, it's kind of it's just waddling along and it's cute
[07:54.380 -> 07:56.380] and furry and probably harmless
[07:56.700 -> 07:58.220] but
[07:58.220 -> 08:00.060] Yeah, once it comes down to the crunch
[08:00.060 -> 08:04.980] It's a killer really and that was that was where I felt it was there was some real cool resemblance
[08:04.980 -> 08:05.160] We won't touch on 2015 too much, but we don't need It's a killer really and that was where I felt there was some real cool resemblance.
[08:05.160 -> 08:07.560] We won't touch on 2015 too much.
[08:07.560 -> 08:10.160] We don't need to.
[08:10.160 -> 08:14.720] But moving on from there, obviously victories in every season, but anything particular that
[08:14.720 -> 08:17.920] you can really pick out from those years since?
[08:17.920 -> 08:23.480] I mean 2015, I'll still say a lot happened in 2015.
[08:23.480 -> 08:26.720] More on a personal level I think with with life
[08:26.720 -> 08:31.280] Jules passing that affected me more than I ever would have thought and I had a
[08:31.280 -> 08:35.680] few other things going on in my life at that time which in a way like shaped me
[08:35.680 -> 08:40.220] now into this kind of next version of who I am but yeah that that weekend the
[08:40.220 -> 08:46.320] first race back was Budapest and that was my first podium of that year and it was a double
[08:46.320 -> 08:51.520] podium for the team and that was, I just remember the whole weekend was very emotional and but just
[08:51.520 -> 08:57.360] to get a podium there felt massive and that was a just a huge relief and a moment of kind of
[08:57.360 -> 09:05.280] gratitude and everything and that was really important so I'll still say 2015 that was that was a really big high to come
[09:05.280 -> 09:12.080] off such a low and then yeah 16 my first pole was achieved you know in in Monaco
[09:12.080 -> 09:16.600] that was awesome I went from you know at that stage one of the biggest highs in
[09:16.600 -> 09:20.800] my career to the biggest low 24 hours later with with the pit stop stuff and
[09:20.800 -> 09:26.240] the race win getting away from me but then I got I got it back later
[09:26.240 -> 09:29.640] that year I got my win back in Malaysia which was a good battle with Max and
[09:29.640 -> 09:34.440] then two years later I got my win back in Monaco so yeah many many cool highs
[09:34.440 -> 09:39.160] and moments along the way. Did that moment in 2016 make what happened this
[09:39.160 -> 09:46.440] year all the more sweeter? Yeah it did I know I I didn't think it would like from that day in 2016 I
[09:46.440 -> 09:50.760] was I still believed I'd win Monaco like so I knew it wasn't gonna be my only
[09:50.760 -> 09:56.360] chance but in my head I was like when I do win I'm not really gonna care I'm
[09:56.360 -> 10:00.360] gonna be like well I should have won this already so screw this like should
[10:00.360 -> 10:04.520] be two not one. Having that heartbreak a few years ago and getting it and in such
[10:04.520 -> 10:10.960] kind of dominant fashion leading every session made it really sweet. And seeing everyone around me,
[10:11.520 -> 10:14.800] seeing all the people gathered around the pool and like how many people were happy for me,
[10:14.800 -> 10:19.680] that was that kind of made it feel more real and satisfying as well. It wasn't exactly the easiest
[10:19.680 -> 10:30.240] race for you either, did the that honey badger spirit come out once again that race? Yeah, yeah it sucked. The Honey Badger came out in a different way, yeah. It just wasn't
[10:30.240 -> 10:35.400] fun, it wasn't fun. It was only until probably 10 laps to go that I was like, alright, no
[10:35.400 -> 10:40.800] one is taking this from me. But up until then there was just too much going on for me to
[10:40.800 -> 10:48.940] kind of think about the win. I was just trying to survive at that stage. But then yeah, there was a few laps to go. I think Simon, my engineer, came on the radio
[10:48.940 -> 10:55.040] and said something to me. He still sounded a bit concerned. And at that stage I was convinced
[10:55.040 -> 11:00.480] I wasn't going to lose. And I just said, I got this buddy. And yeah, that was maybe five
[11:00.480 -> 11:05.580] laps to go. And I was like, no one is taking this, I'll push my car across the
[11:05.580 -> 11:08.040] line but I just had that attitude at that stage.
[11:08.040 -> 11:14.900] We won't dwell on the rest of the season but just to put that into some kind of perspective,
[11:14.900 -> 11:20.300] would you say that that time with the team is the most difficult you've had with any
[11:20.300 -> 11:28.480] five seasons here? Yeah it certainly has been. You know this year's been, I thought 2015 was
[11:29.200 -> 11:36.480] challenging, you know on and off track, but this year's been the most. The on-track stuff's been
[11:36.480 -> 11:42.160] more challenging than ever. Also just other things like figuring out a lot of people,
[11:42.160 -> 11:45.920] in a way like Blessum, they've been trying to help, but also just trying to figure out
[11:45.920 -> 11:48.240] who's really trying to help and who's not.
[11:48.240 -> 11:49.640] There's just been a lot of other stuff, you know,
[11:49.640 -> 11:51.560] it's just, I know in the long term,
[11:51.560 -> 11:53.840] and my good friends around me tell me this,
[11:53.840 -> 11:55.720] they're like, it's all part of the story
[11:55.720 -> 11:57.640] and it's all gonna shape, you know,
[11:57.640 -> 12:01.320] a beautiful ending one day, so, yeah.
[12:01.320 -> 12:03.360] I believe that, it sucks for the time being,
[12:03.360 -> 12:05.280] but I believe that. Quick fire round the time being, but I believe that.
[12:05.280 -> 12:09.280] Quickfire round, your best race for Rebel Racing?
[12:09.280 -> 12:11.120] Budapest, 2014.
[12:11.120 -> 12:14.120] Best overtake in your time with the team?
[12:14.120 -> 12:19.560] One of them that stands out is certainly Monza with Seb.
[12:19.560 -> 12:24.120] The overtake, the calculation, the risk and reward, and it was on a teammate.
[12:24.120 -> 12:28.800] I don't know if many people would probably even try that because of the, let's say, risk involved, but yeah,
[12:28.800 -> 12:31.200] Monza with Seb in 2014, that was a sweet one.
[12:31.200 -> 12:34.440] The ultimate highest moment in the five seasons here.
[12:34.440 -> 12:42.280] Yeah, Monaco. Monaco. And that high literally lasted, let's say the drinking went on for
[12:42.280 -> 12:45.000] about four days, but the high just like
[12:45.000 -> 12:51.520] literally waking up in the middle of the night and just like wowing was I
[12:51.520 -> 12:57.700] want to say like seven eight days yeah that was cool. And the lowest? I'm gonna say
[12:57.700 -> 13:02.840] Austin 2018 it just hit me that that race it really got me it was a
[13:02.840 -> 13:06.920] combination I had friends there and I wanted to enjoy my time with them
[13:06.920 -> 13:08.640] but I just, I couldn't snap out of it.
[13:08.640 -> 13:12.200] I was just so down and it wasn't a cool place to be in
[13:12.200 -> 13:13.840] but I guess it's because I care.
[13:13.840 -> 13:15.920] Your favorite radio message to Simon?
[13:20.840 -> 13:21.680] Understood.
[13:24.200 -> 13:27.280] We would say understood so much. If he would say something like
[13:27.280 -> 13:32.840] stupid or really long or just reply understood, Quaifa would say something, he'd just reply understood.
[13:32.840 -> 13:36.920] We actually, a few races ago, we did something we'd never done before in our
[13:36.920 -> 13:42.080] five years together and that was I'd come on the radio and called a move
[13:42.080 -> 13:45.240] before I'd done it. So in Brazil, we came out the last corner,
[13:45.240 -> 13:46.880] I was behind Bodas for so many laps,
[13:46.880 -> 13:49.480] and I was finally what I thought close enough.
[13:49.480 -> 13:50.480] So I just came on the radio, I said,
[13:50.480 -> 13:53.000] I'm going, I'm going this time or something.
[13:53.000 -> 13:55.720] And Simon replied straight away, like, let's have him.
[13:55.720 -> 13:58.120] And I got like halfway down the straight,
[13:58.120 -> 14:00.040] I was like, I'm still pretty far away.
[14:00.040 -> 14:01.280] I was like, I can't not do it
[14:01.280 -> 14:03.240] because I told the whole world I'm doing it.
[14:03.240 -> 14:05.120] So I went for it and pulled it off.
[14:05.120 -> 14:05.840] But that was cool.
[14:05.840 -> 14:08.560] I was a little bit of cockiness felt felt nice.
[14:08.640 -> 14:10.920] When song to sum up your five seasons?
[14:11.400 -> 14:13.440] Lyrically or just just a good song?
[14:13.440 -> 14:16.040] Just one that might have followed you for your time here
[14:16.040 -> 14:19.280] or might just perhaps underline it for you.
[14:19.800 -> 14:22.680] Just go Line of Sight by Odessa.
[14:23.160 -> 14:28.560] I listened to that a lot on the grid. It was just always a song that
[14:28.560 -> 14:35.840] made me happy and loose before a race and I felt like it worked for me for a while and yeah it's
[14:35.840 -> 14:41.280] a good kind of montage song if I look back on like old photos and of my time here that's that's nice
[14:41.280 -> 14:47.440] music to listen to so we'll go with that. Nice guys. We'll hear more from Daniel soon as we bid him farewell.
[14:47.640 -> 14:52.480] It's been a pretty good season for our other boy Max Verstappen with 249 points,
[14:52.680 -> 14:57.200] fourth place in the Drivers' Championship, two wins and 11 podium finishes,
[14:57.400 -> 15:00.200] including five in a row to close out the campaign.
[15:00.400 -> 15:04.760] 2018 has undoubtedly been Max's most successful season to date.
[15:04.960 -> 15:05.000] Tom caught up with him after the last race 2018 has undoubtedly been Max's most successful season to date.
[15:05.000 -> 15:09.600] Tom caught up with him after the last race in Abu Dhabi to get his thoughts on how it
[15:09.600 -> 15:10.600] all played out.
[15:10.600 -> 15:14.600] You know, this season has been a challenging one initially, but then it definitely came
[15:14.600 -> 15:18.840] on and we had some really great results, so very happy about that.
[15:18.840 -> 15:31.000] But of course, every year you depend a lot on the car you get and the package you get. I'm confident that I can do, again next year, a good result.
[15:31.000 -> 15:34.000] We just have to wait and see how good we're going to be initially.
[15:34.000 -> 15:38.000] I'm very confident in the team that we can build a great car again.
[15:38.000 -> 15:43.000] And then of course with our new partner Honda, it's going to be definitely very exciting.
[15:43.000 -> 15:46.480] What would you say has been the most satisfying race of the year for you?
[15:46.480 -> 15:51.200] Obviously you had your two victories, but are there any other races that stood out for
[15:51.200 -> 15:53.520] you as being really satisfying?
[15:53.520 -> 15:58.240] Austria, that was a great win, but just the whole race I think we had good pace and we
[15:58.240 -> 16:01.360] really maximised the result.
[16:01.360 -> 16:11.000] Singapore was good, you know, I had as where I like in France I think it was a good result as well, just a good pace overall, stuff like that.
[16:11.000 -> 16:26.840] I guess also Canada was a good one, the USA starting in the back and then still coming to the podium in second and still fighting for the win as well. That was definitely a really good feeling.
[16:26.840 -> 16:28.160] You've had two and a half years
[16:28.160 -> 16:30.640] with that loud Australian next door.
[16:30.640 -> 16:32.240] Is there anything that you'd say
[16:32.240 -> 16:34.760] that Daniel has taught you on or off the track?
[16:34.760 -> 16:36.840] I think what's really nice to see
[16:36.840 -> 16:38.680] is that Daniel's always, in general,
[16:38.680 -> 16:41.360] a very positive person and he's always smiling
[16:41.360 -> 16:44.040] and it's a good atmosphere to be around him.
[16:44.040 -> 16:48.480] So it's better than always having a grumpy teammate or who doesn't really speak a lot to you.
[16:48.480 -> 16:52.120] So I think that's not a new way, not maybe a lesson,
[16:52.120 -> 16:56.400] but just having a good atmosphere in the team is very important.
[16:56.400 -> 17:01.520] So for sure, I'll take that on board and I'll try to create that with Pierre as well.
[17:01.520 -> 17:04.560] What will you miss least, the singing or the farting?
[17:04.560 -> 17:05.360] Both actually. And just looking ahead to next season as well. What will you miss least, the singing or the farting? Both actually.
[17:06.480 -> 17:10.480] And just looking ahead to next season as well, you know there's quite a few changes,
[17:10.480 -> 17:15.200] Aero, new engine partner, a lot of people are already talking up this Honda partnership but
[17:15.840 -> 17:19.520] in reality do you think you need to sort of drive the car, you know,
[17:19.520 -> 17:23.680] will it be untesting for the first time before you're going to set any real expectations?
[17:23.680 -> 17:28.800] Absolutely, of course it all looks very promising but we have to wait and see until we go onto the
[17:28.800 -> 17:34.480] track next year in Barcelona. So for me at the moment what is the most important is that I'm
[17:34.480 -> 17:37.840] you know ready and fit to drive the car once it's ready.
[17:37.840 -> 17:42.000] Well done Max, we can't wait to see what's in store for you in the 2019 season.
[17:42.000 -> 17:49.720] Now with these podcasts we want to start to introduce you to the team behind the car. We have a series called 60 seconds with
[17:49.720 -> 17:53.720] and this week we'd like you to meet Callum Nicholas. I'm Callum Nicholas and
[17:53.720 -> 17:57.920] I'm the power unit technician. Essentially my job is to oversee the
[17:57.920 -> 18:02.080] build and service of the power unit and all of its ancillaries so cooling
[18:02.080 -> 18:06.640] systems, pipe work, exhausts.
[18:09.440 -> 18:12.160] At the factory my role is to liaise with our production team to ensure that parts are ready for the forthcoming race.
[18:12.160 -> 18:15.760] A lot of the parts that I deal with, although they have a maximum race life,
[18:15.760 -> 18:18.000] they will also have a service life that's a lot smaller,
[18:18.000 -> 18:20.960] so each of those parts has to come back to the factory for service
[18:20.960 -> 18:22.800] before it can be reintroduced to the race pool.
[18:24.000 -> 18:26.000] In terms of engine build, I work on both cars.
[18:26.000 -> 18:29.000] You don't know when you're going to run into an issue that needs quickly sorting.
[18:30.000 -> 18:32.000] My job is to sort of dive in wherever that's required.
[18:34.000 -> 18:37.000] I'm part of the pit stop crew throughout the weekend.
[18:37.000 -> 18:40.000] Both car crews are taken into one to form one pit stop crew.
[18:41.000 -> 18:43.000] Anything you do, you want to sort of work at the pinnacle,
[18:43.000 -> 18:46.000] at the highest level, and I kind of enjoy that challenge.
[18:49.000 -> 18:51.000] Great to meet Callum there, such an important role.
[18:51.000 -> 18:57.000] Now, Daniel Ricciardo isn't just one of the most talented drivers in the Formula 1 paddock, he's also extremely well known for his personality.
[18:57.000 -> 19:03.000] We thought it was only right to run down our top 5 Daniel press conference moments.
[19:03.000 -> 19:04.000] You're going to love this.
[19:04.000 -> 19:07.000] We've got to start with how Daniel likes to treat his car.
[19:07.000 -> 19:08.320] It's very unique.
[19:08.320 -> 19:10.000] Here it is at number five.
[19:10.000 -> 19:12.640] I do a lot of things with my driving style,
[19:12.640 -> 19:14.320] which are very nice to the car.
[19:14.320 -> 19:18.560] I actually talk to it a lot during the race.
[19:18.560 -> 19:19.640] I massage it.
[19:21.640 -> 19:25.680] I wouldn't call it foreplay, but it's something like that.
[19:25.680 -> 19:31.240] And Max is young, he's aggressive, he goes straight in.
[19:31.240 -> 19:32.240] It's quite niche.
[19:32.240 -> 19:34.880] Now, Dan has made a new craze in the sporting world.
[19:34.880 -> 19:39.400] The great and the good in Formula One have been drinking out of their shoes for years,
[19:39.400 -> 19:42.480] so it has to be the shoey at number four.
[19:42.480 -> 20:06.440] Most of the last ones have actually come from the interviewees, if you call them. They've been wanting to do it. be the shoeie at number 4. I was like, I feel like there's some real sick b******s around here. I never thought it would continue like this.
[20:06.440 -> 20:08.240] Like even yesterday, people were shouting it.
[20:08.360 -> 20:11.520] I'm just like walking along, minding my business and they're like, do a shoeie.
[20:11.520 -> 20:16.080] I'm like, I don't actually just take my shoe off while I'm walking in the street and drink out of it.
[20:16.080 -> 20:19.040] So I feel like I dug a hole for myself for this one.
[20:19.800 -> 20:25.400] At three, he's also starting to become famous for his accents, but he doesn't always get it right.
[20:25.400 -> 20:28.000] Well firstly, top of the morning to you Graham.
[20:28.000 -> 20:29.000] And uh...
[20:29.000 -> 20:30.000] All Scottish.
[20:30.000 -> 20:34.360] He had a bit too much champagne.
[20:34.360 -> 20:35.360] That's the problem.
[20:35.360 -> 20:37.600] Champagne and his foot juices.
[20:37.600 -> 20:41.200] So sweat and champagne is about mix I think.
[20:41.200 -> 20:42.280] Viva Scotland.
[20:42.280 -> 20:44.400] But he can get it very right sometimes.
[20:44.400 -> 20:46.520] His American accent is at number 2.
[20:46.520 -> 21:05.200] You know what, that's actually not that bad. how these boys can do it but I'll give it a red heart crack and see how we go.
[21:05.200 -> 21:07.800] You know what, that's actually not that bad.
[21:07.800 -> 21:11.200] And at number one, Daniel is well known for his optimism.
[21:11.200 -> 21:14.600] Here he is alongside Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
[21:14.600 -> 21:18.000] You know, I mean, between us all we've got eight world titles, so it's pretty good.
[21:18.000 -> 21:26.400] But yeah, obviously we want nine, so.
[21:27.240 -> 21:28.920] Yeah. Daniel Ricciardo, ever the optimist,
[21:28.920 -> 21:30.080] and that's why we love him.
[21:30.080 -> 21:32.040] Right, we'll hear more from that exclusive
[21:32.040 -> 21:33.800] Daniel Ricciardo chat very soon.
[21:33.800 -> 21:36.760] First, we'd like to introduce you to another area
[21:36.760 -> 21:38.200] of the Red Bull family.
[21:38.200 -> 21:41.120] Tom caught up with Red Bull Freestyle MTB athlete,
[21:41.120 -> 21:42.720] Matt Jones, at the factory.
[21:42.720 -> 21:45.440] So we're here with freestyle mountain bike star,
[21:45.440 -> 21:46.960] Red Bull athlete Matt Jones.
[21:46.960 -> 21:49.720] Matt, you're also like a local boy here to us
[21:49.720 -> 21:51.240] here at the factory.
[21:51.240 -> 21:53.160] Is this your first time here at the factory?
[21:53.160 -> 21:54.680] It's not my first time here actually,
[21:54.680 -> 21:57.960] but given that I live sort of 200 meters away,
[21:57.960 -> 21:59.480] I'd expect to have kind of been here more.
[21:59.480 -> 22:01.280] Well not expect, but it's so local.
[22:01.280 -> 22:03.640] I pull out of my house and drive past this every morning,
[22:03.640 -> 22:08.800] drive past it again coming home. But I don't know it really, I've done a factory tour only last week and it was awesome,
[22:08.800 -> 22:13.200] that was really cool, first time doing that but no this is kind of new ground for me exploring in
[22:13.200 -> 22:17.840] here. Obviously we would have taken you around, we showed you all the former F1 cars that we've got
[22:17.840 -> 22:22.400] in our new MK7 facility over there, what was it like having a look at all those cars up close and
[22:22.400 -> 22:26.720] personal? Yeah MK7's insane, I didn't even know it existed as a facility, but
[22:26.720 -> 22:30.480] you've got everything laid out in there, haven't you? All the iconic cars, dated.
[22:30.480 -> 22:34.160] Seeing them together is so weird, and the progression, the different liveries,
[22:34.160 -> 22:36.000] it's so cool. That was unreal, yeah.
[22:36.000 -> 22:39.840] So we did mention that you live nearby, and last year was a pretty big year for you.
[22:39.840 -> 22:47.500] You did your first major filming piece with Red Bull, and was that just in the forests nearby the factory here? Can you tell us a little
[22:47.500 -> 22:51.260] bit about that? Okay so yeah what we're talking about was Frames of Mind which
[22:51.260 -> 22:56.200] was my first big Red Bull video project which went amazingly. I did like world's
[22:56.200 -> 22:58.900] first trick that haven't been done before in the mountain bike world and
[22:58.900 -> 23:03.580] all at quite a local environment for me. So these woods we're in Colby Cot in
[23:03.580 -> 23:08.600] Milton Keynes but Woven Sands, the woods right next to here, is where I grew up racing, riding,
[23:08.600 -> 23:12.000] just doing jumps on bikes and that's where we built this project which is
[23:12.000 -> 23:15.660] really cool. It kind of brought everything full circle so the showpiece
[23:15.660 -> 23:18.760] for what I've kind of worked towards my whole life was where I grew up riding
[23:18.760 -> 23:21.760] which is quite interesting. It's like unique for me. I've ridden all over the
[23:21.760 -> 23:26.520] world but riding close to home and doing stuff that was new for me, but new for the world to see
[23:26.520 -> 23:28.200] was such a cool opportunity.
[23:28.200 -> 23:30.800] I suppose as a freestyle mountain biker,
[23:30.800 -> 23:33.200] you know, watching that video, Frames of Mind,
[23:33.200 -> 23:35.240] you know, you were very like, creative
[23:35.240 -> 23:36.720] in the way you were saying that you were like,
[23:36.720 -> 23:39.000] picturing the way you wanted to do tricks and stuff.
[23:39.000 -> 23:41.100] When you like, walk into a facility like this
[23:41.100 -> 23:43.400] or in an urban environment or anywhere,
[23:43.400 -> 23:44.880] is your mind constantly thinking like,
[23:44.880 -> 23:47.160] oh, what tricks I could do here, like I could jump off that
[23:47.160 -> 23:50.040] ledge or what could I do, is that something you were thinking about while
[23:50.040 -> 23:53.360] you're walking around the factory? Proper interesting question that and something
[23:53.360 -> 23:57.080] I don't get asked too often but I think it's so true what you've just said I
[23:57.080 -> 24:02.000] can't ever switch off from that mode of visualizing riding my bike or finding
[24:02.000 -> 24:06.160] weird and wonderful features amongst just environments
[24:06.160 -> 24:10.460] like this. We're in a factory, there's so many cool different levels, surfaces, platforms
[24:10.460 -> 24:15.200] and I'm always like kind of exploring options. Even though I was just immersed in cars and
[24:15.200 -> 24:20.040] F1 and Red Bull, you still can't help but kind of slip out of, oh that could be rideable,
[24:20.040 -> 24:23.080] or you could definitely jump off there, is that too high? Like stuff like that. It's
[24:23.080 -> 24:26.360] always going on in your mind and And I think that kind of addiction
[24:26.360 -> 24:28.280] is part of why I carried on riding bikes
[24:28.280 -> 24:29.100] and why I'm where I am.
[24:29.100 -> 24:31.600] But no, I think, imagine riding in here.
[24:31.600 -> 24:33.240] Has anyone ever brought a bike in here?
[24:33.240 -> 24:34.080] I don't think so, mate.
[24:34.080 -> 24:36.240] Maybe one day we'll have to let you loose in here.
[24:36.240 -> 24:37.080] That would be cool.
[24:37.080 -> 24:38.360] Two wheels, eh, around the factory.
[24:38.360 -> 24:39.760] And mate, just finally, like,
[24:39.760 -> 24:41.520] what's next on the horizon for you?
[24:41.520 -> 24:44.120] Like, what have you got planned for next year?
[24:44.120 -> 24:50.360] So right now we're in my off season, so I'm doing a lot of my own video content stuff, YouTube.
[24:50.360 -> 24:53.760] Next year's big, it's the contest season again, what we call Crankworx.
[24:53.760 -> 24:55.720] They're the main freestyle mountain bike events.
[24:55.720 -> 24:59.840] I'll be kicking that off in New Zealand around March, April time, so I've still got a few
[24:59.840 -> 25:03.600] months to figure out some new stuff because the sport's progressing so fast.
[25:03.600 -> 25:09.800] It's just almost weekly you see new tricks, new variations of tricks being done by effectively what are my competitors.
[25:09.800 -> 25:12.120] So it puts the pressure on but I'm loving it man.
[25:12.120 -> 25:18.000] It's just good to be close to home again, spending some time at my compound which is local, learning tricks, riding bikes
[25:18.000 -> 25:21.920] and coming here for a tour and to kind of see all this was just a massive treat.
[25:21.920 -> 25:25.000] I'm really into my cars. I'd call myself a petrol head.
[25:25.000 -> 25:27.000] So F1's the pinnacle of that.
[25:27.000 -> 25:29.000] So to get a tour was, I'm really lucky.
[25:29.000 -> 25:30.000] Such a unique experience.
[25:30.000 -> 25:31.000] So thank you.
[25:31.000 -> 25:32.000] No worries.
[25:32.000 -> 25:33.000] Well, like you say, just around the corner.
[25:33.000 -> 25:34.000] So you're welcome back anytime.
[25:34.000 -> 25:35.000] Thanks for chatting to us.
[25:35.000 -> 25:35.500] Cheers, guys.
[25:35.500 -> 25:36.000] Thank you.
[25:36.000 -> 25:37.000] Nice one, chaps.
[25:37.000 -> 25:38.000] We're almost done.
[25:38.000 -> 25:41.000] And we'll be back in the new year with some more exciting episodes.
[25:41.000 -> 25:46.160] But after five seasons and precisely 100 races Daniel
[25:46.160 -> 25:49.880] Ricciardo has hung up his famous blue overalls and is heading off to pastures
[25:49.880 -> 25:54.800] new in 2019. We want to thank him and wish him all the luck in the future, not
[25:54.800 -> 25:59.000] too much luck of course, but it feels only right to give him the final word on
[25:59.000 -> 26:03.880] the podcast. This is part two of Steve's exclusive chat at the factory. It all
[26:03.880 -> 26:06.600] obviously ended in Abu Dhabi last Sunday,
[26:06.600 -> 26:09.840] an emotional send off in the garage before the race.
[26:09.840 -> 26:12.280] Is that the moment where it really started to get real?
[26:12.280 -> 26:16.440] Yeah, it did, but I also had to try and hold myself back
[26:16.440 -> 26:18.040] a bit because I knew I was about to race
[26:18.040 -> 26:21.400] and I felt like if I had completely absorbed it all
[26:21.400 -> 26:23.400] and got, let's say, emotional,
[26:24.960 -> 26:27.520] it may have not been the best thing before a race.
[26:27.520 -> 26:30.720] So I kind of, I definitely appreciated it,
[26:30.720 -> 26:32.320] but I tried to still stay focused
[26:32.320 -> 26:35.240] and kind of have the race at the forefront of my mind.
[26:35.240 -> 26:37.920] But yeah, I mean, it was like, it was cool.
[26:37.920 -> 26:40.920] I saw my parents there and mum, of course, was crying.
[26:40.920 -> 26:43.360] And yeah, it was cool to have them there.
[26:43.360 -> 26:48.560] And it was really nice touch, what the team did for me. After some of the low points this year
[26:48.560 -> 26:52.040] you've been seen to go back down to the garage and and see the crew that you
[26:52.040 -> 26:55.960] work with every year. Is that firstly what was the reason behind that and
[26:55.960 -> 26:59.520] secondly is it that camaraderie that really pulls you through some of those
[26:59.520 -> 27:04.160] times? I feel it's certainly important because at the end of the day yes I'm
[27:04.160 -> 27:05.680] in the spotlight I'm in the car,
[27:05.680 -> 27:11.040] but you know everyone working, especially you know like the guys in the garage, they're as heartbroken
[27:11.040 -> 27:15.520] as me and they worked as many hours if not more than me over the course of the race weekend.
[27:15.520 -> 27:22.320] So you know sometimes I've literally just wanted to get out and go and hide, but yeah fortunately
[27:23.120 -> 27:27.160] most times I do still know where my heart is and think
[27:27.160 -> 27:31.040] about them and Mexico was tough that was two on the bounce which were pretty
[27:31.040 -> 27:36.160] brutal and I went in the garage to see the guys and kind of felt like we were
[27:36.160 -> 27:39.560] all in the same position so we all needed to like hug each other you know
[27:39.560 -> 27:47.840] it wasn't like screw you you didn't do this for me. Like, we were all hurting and it was all, you know, none of our fault kind of thing.
[27:47.840 -> 27:55.760] So we all just went in and yeah, there was a few grown men tearing up, just heartbroken.
[27:55.760 -> 27:58.400] So it's important, I think, just to keep that.
[27:58.400 -> 28:01.040] And I do, I have a great, great relationship with the guys.
[28:01.040 -> 28:04.080] Leaving the team, you know, those little things are hard because like,
[28:04.080 -> 28:07.640] oh, what about those guys? Like, I'm not gonna have them anymore and those good
[28:07.640 -> 28:11.880] times and those dinners we'll have and those laughs and yeah you've got to put
[28:11.880 -> 28:15.660] it to the side but it's it's hard it really is you build awesome
[28:15.660 -> 28:18.900] relationships. And of course you won't be far away next season, just next door.
[28:18.900 -> 28:22.600] You'll be popping in for a Red Bull from time to time. I'm pretty stoked that
[28:22.600 -> 28:30.200] Renault got fourth and obviously with Red Bull in third our garages will be alongside each other so yeah I'll still get
[28:30.200 -> 28:37.200] my caffeine dose for sure. I mean Red Bull's been awesome to me and yeah I'll always keep
[28:37.240 -> 28:44.240] that part of me close and yeah if he's offering then I'll take one so yeah I'll pop in for
[28:44.240 -> 28:48.460] sure. From crew to teammates you know you look to have built a really strong bond with Max
[28:48.460 -> 28:52.760] as well over the years. Will that continue do you think now, now you're no longer teammates?
[28:52.760 -> 28:57.480] I think it will, maybe even better, because you're kind of not as direct competitors in
[28:57.480 -> 29:03.520] a way. We'll see, unless we're battling for the same bit of tarmac, that could always
[29:03.520 -> 29:06.880] spice things up. But I'd say the relationship with Max and myself
[29:06.880 -> 29:08.960] went better than, I'll be honest,
[29:08.960 -> 29:10.040] than I thought it would go.
[29:10.040 -> 29:13.600] Just our personalities and our, I think, our self-belief.
[29:13.600 -> 29:15.920] You know, I really believe he thinks
[29:15.920 -> 29:17.960] he's the best in the world and I believe I am.
[29:17.960 -> 29:19.860] So that can obviously clash,
[29:19.860 -> 29:22.960] but we always manage to, at least 99% of the time,
[29:22.960 -> 29:24.600] manage to keep that, I don't know,
[29:24.600 -> 29:26.040] just in its own little place.
[29:26.040 -> 29:27.040] So it was cool.
[29:27.040 -> 29:31.200] It was a good hard fight with him and enjoyed it.
[29:31.200 -> 29:32.560] Did he get you a leaving present?
[29:32.560 -> 29:33.560] Not yet.
[29:33.560 -> 29:35.520] You get to an age, you don't really expect presents anymore.
[29:35.520 -> 29:39.160] I mean, Max, if you're listening, if you want to give me one, sure.
[29:39.160 -> 29:40.160] But otherwise, it's all good.
[29:40.160 -> 29:42.640] I won't take it personal.
[29:42.640 -> 29:48.000] And just to end the interview here, everyone on their last day in the office must make a speech.
[29:48.000 -> 29:50.000] So take it away.
[29:50.000 -> 29:53.000] Alrighty, here we go. You've got to put me on the spot here.
[29:53.000 -> 30:01.000] Firstly, I'm happy and comfortable with, let's say, the situation and the terms I'll leave the team on.
[30:01.000 -> 30:08.920] I'm not leaving with my head down. I'm not leaving with any broken relationships or anything like that. I leave proud and I feel
[30:08.920 -> 30:12.960] like I've given the team my all and I feel I've had that in return.
[30:12.960 -> 30:17.280] I never felt anything less than that. That's something I'm
[30:17.280 -> 30:21.920] certainly happy and comfortable with and I think on both sides it's
[30:21.920 -> 30:26.560] been a beautiful relationship and for now it's gonna go off and
[30:26.560 -> 30:32.880] do its own thing but I just thank Red Bull, the brand, for really getting behind me at such a
[30:32.880 -> 30:39.920] young age, you know, that's the reality. Sure, my dad helped me out as a kid but he couldn't have
[30:39.920 -> 30:44.720] got me to this level, you know, with himself and a few friends as much as I would have wanted to, so
[30:44.560 -> 30:49.680] got me to this level, you know, with himself and a few friends as much as they would have wanted to. So having Red Bull, you know, their support getting me here, that's something I'll never
[30:49.680 -> 30:56.400] forget and that's a big reason, the biggest reason why I'm able to make a career out of this,
[30:56.400 -> 31:02.000] you know, my dream job. So they're a massive part of getting me to reach many memories,
[31:02.000 -> 31:06.120] many of my dreams, so that's been awesome and Red Bull
[31:06.120 -> 31:11.240] Racing here it's been fun you know it's unfortunately I think I
[31:11.240 -> 31:14.440] touched on earlier it's not until you look back and realize how much you've
[31:14.440 -> 31:17.760] done even off track you know how many cool things you've done you're like oh
[31:17.760 -> 31:23.960] wow like actually it was a pretty cool time and you know in a sport that can be
[31:23.960 -> 31:25.440] very professional and
[31:26.240 -> 31:29.400] Sometimes a little bit too professional. Let's call it
[31:29.920 -> 31:32.560] I feel the team's always made us
[31:33.240 -> 31:39.040] Feel like we can do what we want and allowed us to kind of run free and I really respect and appreciate that
[31:39.040 -> 31:45.440] So yeah, everyone part of the team at the, on track, just want to say thank you.
[31:45.440 -> 31:46.800] It's been a hell of a ride.
[31:46.800 -> 31:48.120] I really appreciate it.
[31:48.120 -> 31:52.080] And yeah, may see you soon.
[31:52.080 -> 31:53.120] Thanks again, Daniel.
[31:53.120 -> 31:54.440] All the best for the future.
[31:54.440 -> 31:55.720] This is Blitz Kids.
[31:55.720 -> 31:57.520] All I want is everything.
[31:57.520 -> 31:59.880] Phil's only right we end with that for Dan.
[31:59.880 -> 32:01.800] Thanks for listening to this special episode
[32:01.800 -> 32:02.640] of the podcast.
[32:02.640 -> 32:04.360] What an incredible year it's been.
[32:04.360 -> 32:09.440] We'll see you back in 2019 with more action from the track, Paddock and the Factory.
[32:09.440 -> 32:26.000] Until then, take care. We played our own dance, we sung our own dance
[32:25.000 -> 32:30.000] We wear our hearts upon our sleeves to the end
[32:34.000 -> 32:38.000] When I was born and raised
[32:38.000 -> 32:43.000] All I wanted was to feel the pain
[32:43.000 -> 32:47.000] I thought that everyone should feel this way So I sacrificed my glory days
[32:47.000 -> 32:56.000] Now I'm here, I'm alive But barely I feel so contrived
[32:56.000 -> 33:05.000] A leaning tower of possibility Built up on all these lies
[33:05.000 -> 33:07.500] Cause it ain't worth it, but that's life
[33:07.500 -> 33:10.000] Will someone please just take me back?
[33:10.000 -> 33:15.000] All I want is everything I've always had
[33:15.000 -> 33:20.000] All I want, all I want, all I want
[33:20.000 -> 33:25.240] Is everything All I want, all I want, all I want It's everyday
[33:29.800 -> 33:34.200] All I want, all I want, all I want It's everyday
[33:34.880 -> 33:38.400] So now I'm finally free
[33:38.960 -> 33:43.520] To be anything I want to be
[33:44.000 -> 33:48.000] I can't make my mind up on which me
[33:48.000 -> 33:54.000] That I really want the world to see
[33:54.000 -> 33:57.000] Because I'm here, I'm alive
[33:57.000 -> 34:00.000] I'm briefly blinded by the lights
[34:00.000 -> 34:03.000] When the flesh dies out, my heart cries out
[34:03.000 -> 34:07.300] Is this all that's inside? Was's it worth if the grass is black?
[34:07.300 -> 34:09.800] Will someone please just take me back?
[34:09.800 -> 34:14.300] All I want is everything I've always had
[34:15.000 -> 34:19.800] All I want, all I want, all I want
[34:19.800 -> 34:23.300] Is everything
[34:25.280 -> 34:29.680] All I want, all I want, all I want
[34:29.680 -> 34:31.280] Is everything
[34:31.280 -> 34:33.600] We all look good together
[34:33.600 -> 34:36.000] We deal in debt around
[34:36.000 -> 34:39.840] I've lost my faith in what I've always done
[34:39.840 -> 34:41.280] It's everything
[34:41.280 -> 34:43.120] And the confidence I crave
[34:43.120 -> 34:45.000] Is all I need now to be saved
[34:45.000 -> 34:47.000] And I've lost all these that I've fought
[34:47.000 -> 34:50.000] To be just like we're all just born
[34:50.000 -> 34:51.000] And so I say
[34:51.000 -> 34:53.000] And my life was always great
[34:53.000 -> 34:55.000] It was worth living in a heart that can't be saved
[34:55.000 -> 34:59.000] When I was born and raised
[34:59.000 -> 35:05.200] All I wanted was to feel the pain
[35:09.800 -> 35:11.200] All I want, all I want, all I want Is everything
[35:11.200 -> 35:13.600] We are the good guys
[35:13.600 -> 35:16.100] We deal in debt drugs
[35:16.100 -> 35:20.200] We only care about what we can amend
[35:21.100 -> 35:23.600] We paint our own dirt
[35:23.600 -> 35:26.000] We sung our own dance, we sung our own dance
[35:26.000 -> None] We wear our hearts upon our sleeves till the end you
