**F1 Fan Fiction: Unveiling the New Era of Formula One Racing**
In this captivating podcast episode, hosts Akash and Saran delve into the thrilling world of Formula One racing, specifically focusing on the highly anticipated 2022 season. With the season just around the corner, they engage in an insightful discussion about the striking new car designs revealed by various teams.
**Striking New Car Designs:**
The hosts begin by expressing their awe and excitement at the sleek and impressive aesthetics of the new cars. They acknowledge that initial skepticism about the model car showcased by Formula One last year has dissipated, as the actual car designs have surpassed expectations. The cars are praised for their sleekness, embodying the essence of what a race car should be.
**Emphasis on Improved Racing:**
The hosts highlight the significant changes in the technical regulations, particularly those aimed at simplifying aerodynamics and reducing the creation of vortices that disrupt airflow for following cars. These modifications are intended to enhance racing, allowing cars to follow each other more closely and potentially leading to more exciting and competitive races.
**Mid-Pack Contenders:**
Akash and Saran observe an interesting trend among the teams, with many expressing aspirations of dominating the mid-pack. They acknowledge that only one team can truly rule this segment of the grid, setting the stage for intense competition and potential surprises throughout the season.
**18-Inch Wheels and Wheel Covers:**
The hosts discuss the introduction of 18-inch wheels and the use of covers on the rims. They speculate on the potential aerodynamic benefits of the covers and the possibility of displaying information on them in the future. However, they also raise concerns about brake cooling and how it will be managed with the enclosed wheel design.
**Ground Effect and Suspension Regulations:**
The podcast delves into the concept of ground effect, which is expected to play a crucial role in generating downforce for the new cars. This design element, combined with new suspension regulations, is anticipated to create a more stable and balanced driving experience for the drivers.
**Unpredictability and Potential Dominance:**
Akash and Saran acknowledge that while the new regulations aim to tighten the mid-pack and bring the cars closer in terms of performance, there is a possibility that, as the season progresses, a few teams may emerge as clear frontrunners. This could potentially lead to a scenario where a select group of teams dominates the latter part of the season.
**Overall Enthusiasm and Anticipation:**
The hosts conclude the episode by expressing their excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season. They emphasize that the new cars and regulations have the potential to revolutionize Formula One racing, making it more competitive and entertaining for fans worldwide.
[00:00.000 -> 00:12.280] Hey folks, welcome to F1 Fan Fiction. We are your hosts. I am Akash.
[00:12.280 -> 00:13.280] And I am Saran.
[00:13.280 -> 00:19.760] We come to you mid-season for a different kind of a banter. What you are going to listen
[00:19.760 -> 00:27.680] to over the next week are going to be two drops of five libraries that I've released in each section.
[00:27.680 -> 00:35.120] So you're going to see, you're going to listen to five libraries episode once and then another five at the end of the week.
[00:35.120 -> 00:53.000] Getting into it, before we talk about the season and the libraries that have popped up, Sarang, how do the cars look to you in general? Man, I was a bit skeptical looking at the model car that, you know, Formula One had made back in last year sometime.
[00:53.000 -> 01:01.000] Because it looked very toyish, right? For some reason, like, especially the car was not to scale as well.
[01:01.000 -> 01:05.440] It was a little smaller as well. But man, these cars blew me away.
[01:05.440 -> 01:08.640] They really look so awesome, right?
[01:08.640 -> 01:12.280] Yeah, yeah. FIA has tried this years and years over again
[01:12.280 -> 01:15.360] where they've tried to showcase a car that's gonna come next year
[01:15.360 -> 01:17.720] which is gonna be such a good racing car.
[01:17.720 -> 01:20.880] And then all of these aero engineers and techies
[01:20.880 -> 01:25.000] make it more suited for like fast and whatever,
[01:25.880 -> 01:28.040] whatever, whatever, and just loses the charm.
[01:28.040 -> 01:29.600] But yes, you're on point.
[01:29.600 -> 01:33.520] This year it looks so sleek and it's like,
[01:33.520 -> 01:35.840] oh, this is what a race car should be.
[01:37.400 -> 01:42.160] You remember it like that infamous dick knows that.
[01:42.160 -> 01:45.000] I don't know who had come up with, but yeah.
[01:45.160 -> 01:47.340] Uh, I mean, that's what happens, right?
[01:47.340 -> 01:51.800] Like whenever these, uh, these regulations are made, uh, all these
[01:51.940 -> 01:55.240] engineers just sit and try to poke holes in them and find those
[01:55.240 -> 01:57.220] loopholes, those advantages.
[01:57.420 -> 02:01.140] And I'm very honestly, I'm not entirely convinced that these are the cars which
[02:01.140 -> 02:05.080] are going to be there on the first race but we'll see in
[02:05.080 -> 02:12.240] due time who comes up with some real weird oddities. True, some good ones
[02:12.240 -> 02:18.640] that at least stood out for me were you know your front wing is limited to
[02:18.640 -> 02:30.920] four full span elements only you can't tinker around there much that we've seen in the past yeah you're there's some regulations coming in for you know the bendy wings
[02:30.920 -> 02:37.160] nonsense that we've seen throughout the season last year yeah powerful rear wing
[02:37.160 -> 02:42.080] which retains that DRS for slipstream yeah and the most important thing a lot
[02:42.080 -> 02:51.200] better arrow in general right yeah is aero in general is simplified, the vortices which used to be created,
[02:51.200 -> 02:54.800] used to create a lot of issues for the car falling.
[02:54.800 -> 02:57.300] And I'm hoping that this really improves racing.
[02:57.300 -> 02:59.700] And that's what Twilio is intended for.
[02:59.700 -> 03:02.200] True, true. Triter, Micpak.
[03:02.200 -> 03:03.700] That's the interesting part.
[03:03.700 -> 03:07.500] Most of these teams at least, who at least so far released their libraries
[03:07.500 -> 03:11.300] as of this recording there's five that have released.
[03:11.300 -> 03:17.200] We wait for Williams today but the intent being mid-pack becomes triter.
[03:17.200 -> 03:20.700] Every team so far is saying we're going to rule the mid-pack.
[03:20.700 -> 03:23.200] Now there can only be one ruler on the mid-pack.
[03:23.200 -> 03:29.800] So and to that point even Hasb we'll come to each team later but that's going to be interesting fair point
[03:29.800 -> 03:36.960] fair point yeah yeah right what else stands out for you I think another thing which really
[03:36.960 -> 03:43.720] stands out is the wheels I mean 18 inch wheels looks awesome man I was skeptical how it would
[03:43.720 -> 03:45.100] look but those thick tires
[03:45.100 -> 03:49.720] look I mean not thick tires rather thick rims look really good. What's up with
[03:49.720 -> 03:55.080] that actually like is this is this a stock or a just a digitalization or a
[03:55.080 -> 03:59.620] concept phase where they are also covering the rims or is it gonna be like
[03:59.620 -> 04:11.680] a flat disc ring so that you can't even see the brakes or what's happening there? I think so my understanding is basically the covers on the rims are twofold like the use
[04:11.680 -> 04:13.300] of them is twofold.
[04:13.300 -> 04:22.240] One is that it improves the aero because like less sort of air is interacting with the spokes
[04:22.240 -> 04:31.400] of the wheel and it's not getting disturbed anymore you know again going back to not creating those vortices which create those drag in
[04:31.400 -> 04:32.800] the car behind.
[04:32.800 -> 04:37.720] So I think it's in that foot as well as if you have noticed like a lot of these rims
[04:37.720 -> 04:43.800] have like LED strips kind of in there and it's rumored that they were testing this sometime
[04:43.800 -> 04:45.400] back with McLaren.
[04:45.400 -> 04:49.000] I think they are going to test this even during the season sometime.
[04:49.000 -> 04:52.800] And I guess they want to display some information there starting next year or something.
[04:52.800 -> 04:54.300] That's what I've heard.
[04:54.300 -> 04:55.500] Interesting.
[04:55.500 -> 05:01.600] If they do end up doing that, then I'd be curious on how brake cooling works.
[05:01.600 -> 05:07.000] Because if the outers are shut, what's the air intake for brake cooling.
[05:07.000 -> 05:17.000] The other interesting part for me at least is like there's a concept of having big tunnels under the car which ends up creating like lots of downforce this time.
[05:17.000 -> 05:26.160] I think that's going to sit in tandem with some of the suspension regulations that have come in place which you can't use to push your car a bit more down.
[05:26.160 -> 05:29.360] So it's gonna be interesting, man.
[05:29.360 -> 05:30.200] It's gonna be-
[05:30.200 -> 05:31.560] Yeah, it's interesting all around.
[05:31.560 -> 05:36.120] I mean, rightly as you said about the aero changing
[05:36.120 -> 05:38.200] and especially the ground effect, right?
[05:38.200 -> 05:40.240] Like that's what it's all about this time.
[05:40.240 -> 05:44.000] And earlier, like I think F1 had tried
[05:44.000 -> 05:47.000] to bring in ground effect long ago, if I remember.
[05:47.000 -> 06:01.000] But I think back then, the bodies of the cars weren't as strong, like the materials that are used currently, carbon fiber, which is really strong.
[06:01.000 -> 06:10.320] So earlier, they didn't have the right material. So a lot of times what used to happen is that if you would like lose even like one skirting, your car would be super unstable.
[06:11.440 -> 06:17.760] So basically, I think now it's the right time where they can reuse these methods to improve
[06:17.760 -> 06:21.120] downforce without, you know, disturbing the air much for the car behind.
[06:23.280 -> 06:27.600] Well, all in all, a slicker looking car, a faster car,
[06:27.600 -> 06:30.280] which on paper and now with some of the designs
[06:30.280 -> 06:35.200] out does feel like it's going to tighten the mid-pack
[06:35.200 -> 06:37.680] and bring the cars closer.
[06:37.680 -> 06:40.800] But it could also end up meaning that, I think,
[06:40.800 -> 06:43.040] David Coulter or Paul de Rasta said
[06:43.040 -> 06:47.440] that while the first few races might seem things are close enough
[06:47.680 -> 06:50.640] Towards the end of the season will again see like two or three teams
[06:51.360 -> 06:55.880] Emerging out of out of nowhere or just being the way they are
[06:56.280 -> 07:01.600] All in all it's gonna be an interesting season stay tuned for some more bites coming your way
[07:02.080 -> 07:05.640] With individual libraries that we poke into.
[07:05.640 -> 07:06.720] Thanks folks.
[07:06.720 -> 07:07.560] Bye-bye.
